Cards like Soulmates
Soulmates is an intriguing card in MTG that embodies the bond between allies. It’s akin to cards like Twinflame which duplicates a creature for a single turn, echoing the duality theme. However, Soulmates offers a perpetual connection, allowing you to keep the copy as long as you control both. This creates a lasting advantage unlike Twinflame’s temporary boon.
In the same way, Cackling Counterpart creates creature copies. But it’s restrictive since it only targets creatures you own. Soulmates provides flexibility, permitting the copying of any creature you could potentially control. Additionally, Mirror Image is another card with a similar function, yet it lacks the ongoing copy effect which Soulmates offers by amplifying the prowess of a creature copy over multiple turns.
After comparing these cards, Soulmates presents itself as a formidable option for players seeking to maximize their creature’s impact on the battlefield. It not only initiates a powerful ally but also sustains the strategic advantage, leveraged across numerous plays.
Cards similar to Soulmates by color, type and mana cost
Card Pros
Card Advantage: Soulmates offers the potential to repeatedly benefit from draw effects whenever paired creatures enter the battlefield or collaborate, thus enhancing your in-game lead with additional resources.
Resource Acceleration: The Soulmates mechanic can lead to significant mana efficiency, potentially doubling cast effects or providing additional benefits without the need for extra mana investment, enabling quicker deployment of your strategy.
Instant Speed: If Soulmates features on a card with flash or can be triggered during your opponent’s turn, it allows for flexible play, adapting to the state of the game and catching opponents off guard.
Card Cons
Discard Requirement: The Soulmates card imposes a discard obligation, often forcing players to give up valuable hand components. Balancing this cost can be tricky when your hand size is dwindling, potentially leading to disadvantageous trades. Choosing the right card to discard is crucial for maintaining a strategic edge.
Specific Mana Cost: Locked into a multicolor mana cost, Soulmates necessitates a dedicated deck infrastructure. This limits the card’s flexibility and may not align well with decks that are mana-color skewed or that heavily depend on colorless or single-color dynamics.
Comparatively High Mana Cost: Weighing in at a higher mana tier, Soulmates competes for a spot in your deck against other impactful cards. With multiple mana points required, players must evaluate if the benefit of playing Soulmates outweighs its cost compared to other strategic options available within the same mana range.
Reasons to Include in Your Collection
Versatility: Soulmates can seamlessly adapt to different gameplay strategies, making it a valuable inclusion in decks that capitalize on creature synergies or life gain tactics.
Combo Potential: As a card that emphasizes partnerships, Soulmates excels at enhancing interactions and combos with other creatures, amplifying their abilities and creating powerful game-altering effects.
Meta-Relevance: Given the shifts in competitive play, Soulmates’ ability to form quick alliances and change the battlefield tempo could give players an edge, specifically in environments where forging creature connections swiftly is key to victory.
How to beat
Soulmates is an intricate card that brings a unique dynamic to the battlefield in Magic: The Gathering. Its ability to bond creatures and leverage their combined strengths can quickly turn the tide of the game. When facing this synergistic pair, an effective strategy is to disrupt the bond. Removal spells that can target multiple creatures, such as board wipes, are ideal for severing their connection. Single-target removal can also be efficient, although it requires careful timing to dismantle the Soulmates before their bond yields significant value.
Another way to counteract Soulmates is through counterspells, preventing them from entering the battlefield in the first place. This preemptive approach can save players from having to deal with the powerful duo later in the game. Additionally, leveraging cards that strip abilities from creatures can neutralize the benefits of their bond, effectively rendering Soulmates as ordinary creatures without the perks of their synergistic interaction.
Controlling the board state and keeping one’s defenses up can put a player in a good position when up against Soulmates. Denying your opponent the chance to fully utilize the potentials of Soulmates may very well put you ahead in a game of Magic: The Gathering.

2019-11-12 | If one of the enchanted creatures leaves the battlefield without dying, Soulmates is put into its owner’s graveyard, but the other creature won’t be destroyed. The same is true if one of the enchanted creatures can’t legally be enchanted by Soulmates (perhaps because it gained protection from enchantments or it’s no longer a creature). |
2019-11-12 | If one of the target creatures becomes an illegal target while Soulmates is on the stack, Soulmates resolves but doesn’t enter the battlefield because its enchant ability won’t be satisfied. If both targets are illegal, it doesn’t resolve at all. In both of these cases, it’s put directly into its owner’s graveyard from the stack. |
