Before Phyrexia's corruption, many of Mirrodin's creatures were more curious than cruel.

Cards like Sojourner's Companion

Sojourner’s Companion brings a unique twist to Artifact Creature cards in MTG. It aligns itself with a cadre of cards that serve multiple roles in gameplay. For example, the Skittering Surveyor offers a similar function by enabling mana fixing through its ability to fetch a basic land card from your library. Yet, Sojourner’s Companion steps ahead by also being a sizable creature that can turn into a potent vehicle under the right conditions, a versatility the Surveyor does not possess.

Affinity for artifacts decks may recall Myr Enforcer as a parallel, both benefit from the abundance of artifacts to reduce their casting cost. Where the Companion forges its own path is in the modular aspect that allows it to adapt to being a cog in the machine or the machine itself. Similarly, the Foundry Inspector also reduces costs of artifact spells, but it lacks the transformability that gives Sojourner’s Companion its edge.

Sojourner’s Companion admirably joins the ranks of utility creatures in MTG with its dual functionality. It is not merely a creature; it embodies the flexibility and strategic depth that the game encourages, making it an intriguing option for players refining their artifact-rich decks.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Sojourner’s Companion provides a consistent means of refilling your hand. This leverages your position by giving access to more options every turn, essential for dominating the game.

Resource Acceleration: As a versatile artifact, this card can streamline your deck’s performance by smoothing out the mana curve. Efficient use of resources is key to outpacing opponents and this card can be a pivotal addition for that very purpose.

Instant Speed: The ability to react to an opponent’s actions at instant speed cannot be overstated. Sojourner’s Companion can be an ace up the sleeve, able to be played when the timing is just right, potentially disrupting opponent strategies and keeping you one step ahead.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Sojourner’s Companion forces players to discard another card from their hand to activate its ability. When you’re already managing a tight hand economy, this condition can set you back, making it a bit of a double-edged sword in situations where card advantage is critical.

Specific Mana Cost: The mana cost of Sojourner’s Companion can be a sticking point for multicolor decks that may struggle with the specific color alignment required to cast it efficiently. Ensuring you have the right mana available can be challenging, especially in the early game when mana bases are still being developed.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a cost that’s on the higher end for its card type, Sojourner’s Companion may lag behind when compared to other options within the same mana range. For players seeking to maintain pace in faster formats or when facing more agile opponents, the mana investment in Sojourner’s Companion might not always align with an optimum gameplay strategy.

Reasons to Include in Your Collection

Versatility: Sojourner’s Companion has a flexible role in artifact-centric decks. Its ability to adapt to various playing styles makes it a valuable addition for players who appreciate flexible and scalable deck components.

Combo Potential: With its synergistic affinity for artifacts, the Sojourner’s Companion can easily slot into combos that capitalize on artifact count, enhancing strategies that revolve around artifacts and their interactions.

Meta-Relevance: As the gameplay is often dictated by the presence of powerful artifact strategies, Sojourner’s Companion maintains its relevance. Its synergy with common artifacts and the potential to generate substantial value in prolonged games make it a pertinent choice for current metagame considerations.

How to beat

Sojourner’s Companion introduces a clever artifact nuance to Magic the Gathering gameplay, akin to Adaptive Automaton or Cranial Plating in terms of customization. This particular card elevates artifact-based strategizing, fortifying itself with versatility akin to Cranial Plating’s power enhancement, yet it comes with the added benefit of a potential mana-free play if you’ve assembled enough artifacts.

To outmaneuver Sojourner’s Companion, consider leveraging artifact removal spells like Abrade or Shatter, swiftly eliminating the Companion before it benefits from its mana efficiency. You might also opt for counterplay with Stony Silence or Karn, the Great Creator, which hinder artifact abilities and can pivot the game in your favor. Like a chess game, pre-emptive actions against artifacts and maintaining board control are your best tactics; it’s about countering the synergies, not just the pieces.

Remember, assessing and disrupting an opponent’s artifact synergy effectively neuters Sojourner’s Companion’s advantages, akin to how Reactive Disenchant stymies an enchantment-heavy strategy. Observing the board and proactively controlling artifacts ensures that companions of any sort won’t outstay their welcome in your match.

2021-06-18 Typecycling is a form of cycling. Any ability that triggers on a card being cycled also triggers on a card being typecycled. Any ability that stops a cycling ability from being activated also stops a typecycling ability from being activated.
2021-06-18 Unlike the normal cycling ability, typecycling doesn't allow you to draw a card. Rather, it lets you search your library for a card with the type or types indicated by the ability name. For example, a card with basic landcycling lets you search for a basic land card, and a card with Wizardcycling lets you search for a Wizard card.
