This spell costs less to cast for each Gate you control. Gate Colossus can't be blocked by creatures with power 2 or less. Whenever a Gate enters the battlefield under your control, you may put Gate Colossus from your graveyard on top of your library.

Cards like Gate Colossus

Gate Colossus holds its ground as an intriguing creature in the realm of Magic: The Gathering. It finds parallels with Metalwork Colossus—both are formidable constructs that scale in power with the number of noncreature artifacts in play. Yet, Gate Colossus carries the nuance of becoming cheaper for each gate you control, specifically catering to decks that make use of the multicolored gate lands.

Another peer to Gate Colossus is Ulamog’s Crusher, another strong creature with Annihilator 2 that mandates it to attack each turn. While Ulamog’s Crusher has the potential for greater immediate impact, Gate Colossus offers a more manageable mana cost and can recurrently make an appearance from the graveyard when a gate is played, offering persistent board presence.

Digging deeper into comparisons, there’s also Desolation Twin, which creates a token copy of itself upon casting. Although the power is undoubtedly there, Gate Colossus’s focus on synergy with gates and its ability to dodge graveyard removal sets it apart, potentially providing a more consistent threat throughout the game.

Therefore, Gate Colossus not only fits seamlessly into gate-synergistic strategies but also stands as a reliable option for players seeking recurring late-game powerhouse creatures in their Magic: The Gathering deck building toolkit.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Gate Colossus offers intrinsic value through its mechanic that allows it to be played from the graveyard. This ensures you keep a threat on the board without depleting resources from your hand, helping you maintain pressure and card advantage over time.

Resource Acceleration: Thanks to its cost reduction ability for each Gate you control, this golem can hit the battlefield early and hard. This aspect of the card effectively accelerates your resource usage, allowing you to deploy other spells alongside it or keep up mana for responsive play.

Instant Speed: While not an instant itself, Gate Colossus pairs well with instant-speed gate-related spells. This synergy enables you to keep mana available for interactions on your opponent’s turn while setting up an opportune moment to cast the Colossus for a reduced cost.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Although Gate Colossus allows you to cast it from the graveyard as long as you control a Gate, the requirement can feel cumbersome. You’ll need to draw and then discard a Gate, which is not always convenient, especially in the mid to late game when card advantage is critical.

Specific Mana Cost: This card’s cost is heavily reliant on Gates within your deck. Without a sufficient number of Gates, its eight mana cost can be prohibitive and slow to deploy. Decks that are not Gate-centric may find it challenging to include Gate Colossus without compromising the deck’s overall mana curve and efficiency.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: Even with gates to reduce its cost, the initial eight mana is high. In many formats, by the time you can cast Gate Colossus, the battlefield might already be under your opponent’s control, or the pace of the game could have escalated beyond what the Colossus can influence. Other creature cards in the related mana range may provide immediate impact or carry additional abilities that contribute more directly to board control or game tempo.

Reasons to Include Gate Colossus in Your Collection

Versatility: Gate Colossus is a formidable addition to decks utilizing gates. Its cost reduction for each gate you control makes it easily castable in multi-colored gate-based decks, enhancing the flexibility of your strategy.

Combo Potential: This giant can be a linchpin in decks built around gates. As gates come into play, not only do they make the Colossus cheaper to cast, but they also synergize with other gate-matters cards, making it a pivotal piece in a well-oiled gate strategy machine.

Meta-Relevance: In environments where gates are prominent, Gate Colossus presents itself as a resilient threat. Being able to return to the top of the library when a gate enters under your control means each game has the potential for the Colossus to repeatedly press your advantage against opponents.

How to beat

Gate Colossus is a notable force in MTG, known for its cost-reducing ability tied to gates you control, which can result in a powerful creature for a reduced mana investment. This card often finds a home in decks built around gates, making it a robust blocker and a fearsome attacker. Nevertheless, it is not unbeatable.

One effective strategy to triumph over Gate Colossus is employing graveyard manipulation techniques. Since the Colossus can be retrieved from the graveyard by playing a gate, denying that ability is key. Cards like Relic of Progenitus or Sentinel Totem can exile it from the graveyard, eliminating the chance of recurrence. Additionally, having removal spells that exile, such as Path to Exile or Vraska’s Contempt, ensures it doesn’t come back once defeated on the battlefield.

Another tactic is to counteract the Colossus with flying creatures, as it lacks reach, making it vulnerable from above. Swarm strategies can also overwhelm a single Gate Colossus, as having multiple creatures forces your opponent to make unfavorable blocks. Understanding the mechanisms surrounding Gate Colossus and countering them strategically can shift the tide of the game in your favor in a gate-centric match-up.
