Text of card

At the beginning of your end step, if a creature died under your control this turn, draw a card. Whenever the Ring tempts you, if you chose a creature other than Faramir, Field Commander as your Ring-bearer, create a 1/1 white Human Soldier creature token.

Cards like Faramir, Field Commander

Faramir, Field Commander is an exciting prospect for deck builders in Magic: The Gathering, especially among those who favor leadership-themed cards. Comparatively, we have Captain of the Watch, a card that similarly boosts soldier creatures under player’s command. While Captain of the Watch focuses primarily on granting vigilance and a solid presence on the battlefield, Faramir, Field Commander offers a more expansive role with its ability to buff creatures every time you cast a spell.

Another parallel can be drawn with Marshal’s Anthem, which also provides an aura of command by offering creatures a boost in power. Marshal’s Anthem comes with a multi-kicker ability that can potentially resurrect numerous creatures from the graveyard, a feature Faramir doesn’t have. However, what makes Faramir stand out is his potential to steadily strengthen your forces with sustained spellcasting, harnessing both offensive and defensive capabilities.

Evaluating these cards together, it’s apparent that Faramir, Field Commander carves out a unique niche. It might share the battlefield command theme prevalent in leadership cards but distinguishes itself through encouraging a spell-heavy playstyle, thus offering a different strategical component to MTG deck builders.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: When you bring Faramir, Field Commander into play, it often includes an ability or effect that can draw additional cards or allows you to utilize the cards in your hand more effectively. This creates a significant advantage as you are potentially gaining access to more resources and options than your opponent.

Resource Acceleration: Faramir, Field Commander may provide an uptick in your resource development. Whether it’s through ramping up your mana production or giving you access to alternative resources, this card can accelerate your game plan and help bring your heavy hitters to the battlefield with surprising speed.

Instant Speed: The power of being able to act at instant speed cannot be overstated. If Faramir, Field Commander or abilities it grants can be utilized at instant speed, it provides the tactical advantage of reacting to your opponent’s moves during their turn or right before yours begins, thus keeping your opponents on their toes and your strategy flexible.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: One of the downsides of using Faramir, Field Commander involves its potential discard condition. Leveraging this card can come with the cost of parting with other cards in your hand, which can be especially detrimental when your options are already limited.

Specific Mana Cost: Faramir, Field Commander comes with a specific mana cost that can be restrictive for deck building. Constructing a deck to accommodate this cost means you’re tailoring your mana sources very specifically, which may not synergize well with a varied or flexible deck strategy.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a mana cost leaning on the higher side, Faramir, Field Commander demands a substantial investment of resources. Players may find that at this cost, there are alternative commanders or cards that could provide faster or more impactful advantages on the battlefield.

Reasons to Include in Your Collection

Versatility: Faramir, Field Commander’s adaptable nature allows it to seamlessly integrate into a variety of deck types. Its ability to augment both offensive and defensive strategies ensures it can support multiple playstyles.

Combo Potential: This card’s synergy with soldier and token-based strategies can unlock powerful combinations, making it a cornerstone in decks that capitalize on creature numbers and battlefield presence.

Meta-Relevance: Given its aptitude for amplifying creature-based tactics, Faramir, Field Commander remains a formidable choice in a meta that favors extensive board states and collective buffs.

How to beat

Faramir, Field Commander can quickly become a formidable force on the battlefield in MTG, bolstering both itself and your army with its powerful abilities. To counteract its influence, it’s essential to disrupt the synergy it provides to fellow creatures. Efficient removal spells like Path to Exile or Murderous Rider are effective ways at dealing with Faramir directly, removing the threat immediately. Moreover, since Faramir incentivizes a wide board state, cards like Wrath of God or Doomskar can reset the playing field, nullifying the advantage gained from Faramir’s leadership buffs.

Attacking your opponent’s resources is also a strategy worth considering. By using land destruction cards such as Field of Ruin, you can potentially block Faramir’s casting, delaying their game plan. If Faramir has already hit the field, consider options like Pacifism to neutralize its combat capabilities, or even better, Confiscate to turn their asset into your advantage. It’s all about timing and choosing the right moment to strike, preventing your opponent from snowballing to victory with Faramir, Field Commander at the helm of their forces.

Date Text
2023-06-16 Faramir, Field Commander doesn't need to have been on the battlefield when the creature died. For example, if a creature dies during combat on your turn and you cast Faramir, Field Commander during your second main phase, its first ability will trigger at the beginning of your end step.
2023-06-16 Faramir, Field Commander's first ability will trigger only once during your end step, no matter how many creatures died under your control this turn. However, if no creatures have died under your control so far this turn as your end step begins, the ability won't trigger at all. It's not possible to cause a creature to die under your control during the end step in time to have the ability trigger.
2023-06-16 If the creature you choose as your Ring-bearer was already your Ring-bearer, that still counts as choosing that creature as your Ring-bearer for the purpose of abilities that trigger "whenever you choose a creature as your Ring-bearer" or abilities that care about which creature was chosen as your Ring-bearer.
