Text of card

When Elanor Gardner enters the battlefield, create a Food token. At the beginning of your end step, if you sacrificed a Food this turn, you may search your library for a basic land card, put that card onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle.

Her father Samwise gave her the Red Book for safekeeping before he sailed into the West.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Elanor Gardner shines by offering a consistent card advantage. This powerful effect enables the player to replenish their hand, ensuring they always have options.

Resource Acceleration: This card steps up the game in terms of resource acceleration. By providing additional mana sources, players can deploy threats earlier or outmaneuver opponents through superior resource allocation.

Instant Speed: The ability to cast Elanor Gardner at instant speed is a tactical asset. It allows players to remain flexible and reactive, responding to an opponent’s moves efficiently or capitalizing on the perfect moment for maximum impact.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Elanor Gardner necessitates that you discard another card to activate certain abilities. This can become a setback, specifically in gameplay scenarios where maintaining a full hand gives you a strategic edge over your opponent.

Specific Mana Cost: The casting cost of Elanor Gardner requires a precise combination of mana, which could restrict deck flexibility. Decks that don’t consistently generate the needed types of mana may find it challenging to cast Elanor on curve.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: For the abilities Elanor offers, the mana investment is significant. When compared with other cards in the metagame, players may find that there are alternatives that provide similar functionality at a lower mana cost, potentially increasing a deck’s efficiency and speed.

Reasons to Include in Your Collection

Versatility: Elanor Gardner is a flexible inclusion in decks looking for creature support, thanks to her adaptable abilities that can enhance both aggression and defense.

Combo Potential: Elanor Gardner’s abilities can synergize with a variety of cards, enabling powerful combinations that can turn the tide of the game in clever and often unexpected ways.

Meta-Relevance: In an environment teeming with creature-based strategies, Elanor Gardner’s capability to interact favorably on the battlefield makes her a smart pick for those looking to stay competitive.

How to beat

In the diverse world of MTG, Elanor Gardner presents a unique challenge on the battlefield. To effectively counter this card, understanding her abilities is key. With her invaluable capability to filter through the deck while offering lifegain, Elanor demands a strategic approach. One effective tactic is to limit her influence by using removal spells that can bypass her protections or disrupt her ability triggers.

Silencing effects or spells that force sacrificial decisions can negate Elanor’s impact and level the playing field. Employing instant-speed removals or board wipes that can be cast outside of your own turn can also surprise an opponent banking on Elanor’s steady advantage. Always bear in mind the meta you’re diving into, as some strategies may be more effective based on the common decks and tactics.

Ultimately, overcoming the challenge posed by Elanor Gardner involves a combination of proactive board management and reactive disruption tools, ensuring that her potential for card advantage and life stability are kept in check. As with any card in MTG, recognizing when to play your answer is just as crucial as the answer itself.

Cards like Elanor Gardner

Elanor Gardner stirs curiosity among MTG players due to its unique abilities. It can be compared to other cards in the realm of creature control. For instance, Fiend Hunter is another card that temporarily exiles creatures. However, Elanor Gardner brings its own twist by targeting nonland permanents, giving you broader control over the battlefield, unlike Fiend Hunter’s limitation to creatures.

Like Leonin Relic-Warder, which also exiles another nonland permanent when it enters the battlefield, Elanor Gardner offers flexibility and utility. Nevertheless, Elanor Gardner sets itself apart with its option to act from the graveyard. This persistent ability allows strategic plays even after Elanor Gardner has been dealt with, something that Leonin Relic-Warder lacks.

Evaluating these cards side by side, Elanor Gardner proves to be a versatile tool for players. Its capability to influence the flow of the game even after leaving the battlefield makes it an appealing choice for decks focusing on control and long-term tactics.

Date Text
2023-06-16 Do not eat the delicious cards. No, not even for second breakfast.
2023-06-16 Elanor Gardner doesn't need to have been on the battlefield when you sacrificed a Food this turn. For example, if you sacrifice a Food during your first main phase and you cast Elanor Gardner during your second main phase, its last ability will trigger at the beginning of your end step.
2023-06-16 Elanor Gardner's last ability will trigger only once during your end step, no matter how many Foods you sacrificed this turn. However, if you haven't sacrificed any Foods this turn as your end step begins, the ability won't trigger at all. It's not possible to sacrifice a Food during the end step in time to have the ability trigger.
2023-06-16 Food is an artifact type. Even though it appears on some creatures in other sets, it's never a creature type.
2023-06-16 If an effect refers to a Food, it means any Food artifact, not just a Food artifact token. For example, you can sacrifice Lembas, an artifact card with the Food subtype, to activate the last ability of Bill the Pony.
2023-06-16 Some spells and abilities that create Food tokens may require targets. If each target chosen is an illegal target as that spell or ability tries to resolve, it won't resolve. You won't create any Food tokens.
2023-06-16 You can't sacrifice a Food token to pay multiple costs. For example, you can't sacrifice a Food token to activate its own ability and also to activate the last ability of Bill the Pony.
