Text of card

Choose target creature you control. Each other creature you control becomes a copy of it until end of turn, except those creatures aren't legendary.

"Any good experiment is repeatable."

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Echoing Equation stands out for its ability to transform multiple creatures you control into copies of a single target creature. Thus, it can drastically alter the battlefield in your favor, giving you a significant card advantage by potentially upgrading all your creatures to a more formidable one already in play.

Resource Acceleration: While the Echoing Equation itself doesn’t directly provide resource acceleration, the card’s ability to duplicate a powerful creature with mana-producing abilities can indirectly lead to an immense boost in your mana resources, enabling you to cast more spells or use more abilities than you normally could.

Instant Speed: Despite being a sorcery, the strategic timing of casting Echoing Equation can mimic the surprise factor of an instant. By choosing the right moment during your turn, you maximize the impact of the card, potentially catching opponents off guard before they can respond on their turn with untapped mana or removal spells.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Unlike cards that can be played without additional sacrifice, Echoing Equation stipulates a discard as part of its casting. This can put you at a disadvantage by depleting your hand, especially when you’re already running low on other play options.

Specific Mana Cost: This card requires a blend of blue mana and generic mana, which restricts its compatibility primarily within blue or blue-inclusive decks. Players focusing on monocolored or non-blue strategies may find it difficult to incorporate Echoing Equation effectively.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: At a total of five mana to cast, Echoing Equation demands a significant investment. Given the intense competition at this spot on the mana curve, players may prefer to choose a different card that provides more immediate impact or versatility for the same or lower cost.

Reasons to Include in Your Collection

Versatility: Echoing Equation is an adaptive card that can be incorporated into a wide array of blue-based strategies. Its ability to turn all your creatures into copies of a single target allows you to tailor your battlefield presence for offensive or defensive purposes depending on the situation.

Combo Potential: This spell shines in combination with creatures that have powerful enter-the-battlefield effects or game-winning passive abilities. Integrating Echoing Equation into your deck opens up a myriad of possibilities for potent synergies and game-ending interactions with the right creatures on board.

Meta-Relevance: As the metagame shifts and evolves, a card like Echoing Equation can adapt and combat various deck archetypes. It can provide solutions to creature-heavy board states or create opportunities to close out games in environments where copy effects are undervalued or unexpected by opponents.

How to beat Echoing Equation

Echoing Equation introduces a transformative dynamic to the battlefield, allowing you to turn all your creatures into copies of one target creature until end of turn. The card’s power lies in its ability to create instant armies out of single powerful creatures, but it’s not unbeatable. By incorporating instant-speed interaction such as removal spells, counterspells, or sacrifice effects, you can effectively disrupt an opponent’s strategic play. For example, countering the spell with a cheap and efficient counter like Negate, or using a removal like Path to Exile on the target creature before the Equation resolves, will nullify its effect entirely. It’s also worth investing in board wipes like Wrath of God to clear the slate post-Equation. Keeping mana open for these responsive plays is crucial when opposing a deck that runs game-altering cards like Echoing Equation.

Moreover, proactive tactics involve pressuring with aggression early in the game and reducing the opponent’s ability to stabilize their board presence, thereby diminishing the impact Echoing Equation might have. Always be aware that timing and card selection are key in managing potential threats posed by powerful game-changers.

Cards like Augmenter Pugilist // Echoing Equation

The Echoing Equation card stands out in Magic: The Gathering for its ability to transform an entire board state. This enchanting spell allows for the copying of a creature, turning all your creatures into copies of the selected one for the turn. It reminds seasoned players of cards like Mirrorweave, which has a similar instantaneous effect but with a key difference in the scope of creatures affected. Mirrorweave targets all creatures on the battlefield, not just yours, offering both a wider impact and a potential for deft strategic plays.

Focusing on creatures you control, Cackling Counterpart is another comparable spell that creates a token copy of a target creature you control. While it doesn’t affect multiple creatures like Echoing Equation, it provides flexibility as an instant and an option for reuse with its flashback ability. Then there’s the more mana-intensive Clone Legion, which creates copies of all creatures controlled by a specific player. It’s a formidable spell but comes with a higher cost that can impede early game tempo.

All things considered, Echoing Equation’s unique mass clone effect gives it a decisive edge in games where synergistic creature effects can swing the tide of battle, making it a noteworthy card for players crafting creature-centric decks in Magic: The Gathering.

Date Text
2021-04-16 Because damage remains marked on creatures until the damage is removed as the turn ends, nonlethal damage dealt to Augmenter Pugilist may become lethal if the number of lands you control falls below eight.
2021-04-16 Echoing Equation affects only creatures you control at the time it resolves. Creatures that come under your control later in the turn won’t be copies of the chosen creature.
2021-04-16 Echoing Equation copies the printed values of the target creature. It won’t copy any counters on that creature or any effects that have changed its power, toughness, types, color, and so on, and a creature becoming a copy doesn’t remove any such counters or effects that are already applying to it. Notably, Echoing Equation won’t copy any type-changing effects that are currently making the target a creature. For example, if you choose a land that’s become a creature, all your other creatures will become noncreature lands until end of turn.
2021-04-16 If the chosen creature is copying something else, other creatures you control become copies of whatever the chosen creature is copying.
2021-04-16 If the target creature is a token, other creatures you control will copy the original characteristics of that token as stated by the effect that created the token. Any of those creatures that aren’t tokens won’t become tokens in this case. Similarly, if the target creature is a nontoken creature, creature tokens you control won’t stop being tokens.
