Cards like Colossus Hammer

Colossus Hammer is a standout card when it comes to equipping creatures with game-ending power in MTG. Its resemblance to other equipment like Grafted Exoskeleton is clear due to the substantial power boost it gives. Colossus Hammer offers a whopping +10/+10 to a creature, although at the cost of removing their ability to fly. Grafted Exoskeleton doesn’t provide as much of a power boost but equips a creature with infect, potentially leading to swift victories.

Examining other equipment cards, such as Blackblade Reforged, provides insight into alternative strategies. Blackblade Reforged scales its power and toughness bonuses with the number of lands you control, offering a dynamically growing threat. While it doesn’t provide the immediate massive boost of Colossus Hammer, it comes with fewer drawbacks and a potential for overwhelming strength over time.

Within the context of sheer power enhancement, Argentum Armor also enters the discussion. It boosts a creature by +6/+6 and has a potent removal ability, albeit with a high equip cost. Colossus Hammer, in contrast, is affordable to play but costly to equip without additional synergies. In summary, Colossus Hammer’s immense stat increase makes it a force to be reckoned with, especially in decks that mitigate its equip cost or capitalize on its power surge.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Equipped creatures benefit greatly from the massive power boost, often turning a single creature into a major threat that can alter the board state decisively.

Resource Acceleration: Though not a direct source of traditional mana acceleration, Colossus Hammer’s low casting cost enables you to deploy a hefty power enhancer early in the game, significantly speeding up your clock against the opponent.

Instant Speed: While Colossus Hammer itself doesn’t operate at instant speed, its synergy with flash creatures or other instant speed interaction can catch opponents off guard, turning an unassuming creature into a lethal attacker with no warning.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: While Colossus Hammer drastically boosts a creature’s power, it doesn’t come without its setbacks. Players must often find ways to circumvent the considerable equip cost, which may involve discarding other cards or resources that could be vital in the later stages of the game.

Specific Mana Cost: Colossus Hammer requires a precise mana investment to play. Although it’s colorless, its heavy equip cost makes it a significant investment in a game’s early stages, potentially delaying your development of the board or setting back other strategic plays.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: The Hammer’s impact on the battlefield is immense, but it’s important to weigh its cost against alternatives. The mana spent equipping it to a single creature might not be as cost-effective when considering other cards that could provide a broader impact across the battlefield for the same, if not less, mana investment.

Reasons to Include Colossus Hammer in Your Collection

Versatility: Colossus Hammer is a unique equipment card that can turn even the smallest creature into a significant threat, making it a flexible addition to a range of decks, particularly those that can bypass its equip cost.

Combo Potential: This card shines in combination with creatures that have evasion abilities, like flying or trample, or those that can automatically equip items, allowing you to create a powerhouse with minimal setup.

Meta-Relevance: Given the right build, Colossus Hammer fits well into the current meta, where it can catch opponents off guard and close games quickly. Its ability to empower creatures makes it a formidable tool against various control and tempo strategies.

How to beat

Colossus Hammer is a formidable equipment card in Magic: The Gathering, providing a massive power boost to creatures at the expense of their ability to fly. Successfully overcoming this card involves disrupting the synergy between the Hammer and the creatures it equips. Artifact removal spells like Disenchant or Kolaghan’s Command are effective ways to dismantle the threatening combo by destroying the Hammer directly. Creature control strategies can also be efficient; ensuring that opponents don’t have creatures to equip by using removal spells like Doom Blade or Path to Exile can negate the advantage offered by Colossus Hammer.

Moreover, bouncing the equipped creature back to an opponent’s hand with spells like Unsummon can force them to reinvest mana to reequip the Hammer, buying you precious time. It’s also beneficial to block or avoid combat with creatures wielding the Hammer, using creatures with high toughness or effects that prevent or discourage attacks. By prioritizing the containment of Colossus Hammer’s impact on the board, you can maintain control of the game and prevent your opponent from leveraging its full potential.

Date Text
2019-07-12 Colossus Hammer can be attached to a creature that didn't have flying to begin with. It just won't lose flying.
2019-07-12 If an ability of the equipped creature states that it has flying "as long as" a particular condition is true, that condition becoming true will not cause that creature to gain flying. For example, if the equipped creature "has flying as long as it's attacking," it will not gain flying, even if it attacks after Colossus Hammer becomes attached to it.
2019-07-12 If the equipped creature gains flying after Colossus Hammer became attached to it, it will keep flying.
