Cards like Basri Ket

Basri Ket emerges as an influential planeswalker card in MTG, entering the scene alongside other renowned white-aligned characters. Similar to Ajani Goldmane, Basri Ket brings to the table a suite of abilities aimed at bolstering your creatures. While both planeswalkers excel in empowering your forces, Basri Ket offers a unique angle with his devotion to creating and strengthening tokens, differentiating him from Ajani’s broad approach to creature support.

Another card worthy of comparison is Gideon, Ally of Zendikar. Gideon’s flexibility in becoming an indestructible creature distinguishes him, yet Basri Ket retains a distinct position by focusing on consistent token boosts. Moreover, Elspeth, Sun’s Champion’s wide token production and board wipe capabilities set her apart, but Basri’s steadfast loyalty abilities carve out his own niche for token strategy enthusiasts.

Taking into account the range of abilities and strategic uses, Basri Ket holds his ground in a deck centered around synergistic token generation and amplification, marking him as a vital asset for players looking to harness the power of a growing army in MTG.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Basri Ket provides ongoing value by creating a 1/1 white Soldier creature token with each of your combat phases, ensuring you won’t fall behind in board presence.

Resource Acceleration: Basri’s -2 loyalty ability allows you to put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control, effectively accelerating your resources by enhancing your existing army without spending additional mana.

Instant Speed: While Basri Ket himself may not operate at instant speed, his emblem awarded after using his -6 loyalty ability lets you create a 1/1 Soldier token with each noncreature spell cast, providing value during any phase of the game.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Basri Ket doesn’t directly require discarding cards, but creating a deck around his abilities could lead to scenarios where discarding becomes a byproduct of maintaining an optimal hand.

Specific Mana Cost: His specific white mana cost ensures that he fits exclusively within white or white-inclusive decks, potentially limiting deck-building options for a more diverse mana base.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a casting cost of three white mana, Basri Ket can be a significant early game investment. Other planeswalkers or creatures may provide more immediate impact on the board for a similar or lower mana investment.

Reasons to Include in Your Collection

Versatility: Basri Ket thrives in various deck archetypes, particularly those focused on creature strategies. His abilities cater to aggressive, token, and midrange builds, offering flexibility and adaptability in deck construction.

Combo Potential: Basri’s -2 ability to put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control has great synergy with cards that benefit from counters or proliferate mechanics. Additionally, his ultimate can combo with mass token production for an overwhelming board state.

Meta-Relevance: In a meta that favors creature-based tactics, Basri Ket’s role becomes prominent. His ability to generate and empower tokens makes him a strong contender against controlling environments, reinforcing board presence in the face of sweepers and spot removal.

How to beat

Basri Ket is a notable Planeswalker card that can quickly bolster your board presence in MTG. This white-aligned Planeswalker shines in decks that focus on creating and buffing creatures, particularly with his -2 ability that adds a permanent loyalty counter to a creature, making it an enduring threat. His ultimate ability also potentially floods the board with tokens every turn.

Defeating Basri Ket requires a strategy that can handle his creature-centric mechanics. This often includes removal spells to continuously clear the board of tokens and key creatures. Sweepers like Shatter the Sky or Doomskar can effectively reset the board state, countering the advantages that Basri Ket provides. Counteracting his loyalty ability build-up requires precision — applying pressure to keep Basri’s loyalty in check is essential, whether through direct creature attacks or abilities aimed at lowering his loyalty counters. Efficient creature control and preventing Basri Ket from reaching his ultimate are key strategies in keeping this powerful Planeswalker in check.

Overall, swiftly addressing the threats that come with Basri Ket and maintaining control over the pacing of the game will help in overcoming the challenges this Planeswalker poses to MTG players, ensuring that his influence on the battlefield is kept to a minimum.

Date Text
2020-06-23 Although the Soldiers are attacking creatures, they were never declared as attacking creatures. This means that abilities that trigger whenever a creature attacks won't trigger when the Soldiers enter the battlefield attacking.
2020-06-23 Any effects that say that the Soldiers can't attack (such as that of Propaganda) affect only the declaration of attackers. They won't stop the Soldier tokens from entering the battlefield attacking.
2020-06-23 The Soldier token created by Basri's last ability can't attack during the turn you create it unless it gains haste somehow.
2020-06-23 The delayed triggered ability of Basri's second ability triggers if any nontoken creatures attack, and it counts how many nontoken creatures attacked. Attacking nontoken creatures that leave combat before the triggered ability resolves are counted. Token creatures that are attacking don't stop the ability from triggering and aren't counted.
2020-06-23 You choose which player or planeswalker each Soldier token is attacking. They don't have to be attacking the same players or planeswalkers that the nontoken creatures are attacking, and they don't have to be attacking the same player or planeswalker as each other.
