Defender : Until end of turn, target creature with defender gains haste, can attack as though it didn't have defender, and assigns combat damage equal to its toughness rather than its power. Activate only as a sorcery.
Cards like Walking Bulwark
Walking Bulwark finds its place among defender creatures in the MTG landscape, drawing parallels to venerable wall-type cards such as Wall of Omens and Wall of Blossoms. These cards are alike in providing an early game defense. However, Walking Bulwark differs notably in its activated ability, which allows it to stand firm against multicolored spells, an attribute that neither Wall of Omens nor Wall of Blossoms possess.
Another comparable card is Guard Gomazoa. It offers a stout defender with flying, putting a damper on airborne threats. While Guard Gomazoa brings additional aerial defense to the table, it cannot rival Walking Bulwark’s resilience against a spectrum of spells. Furthermore, Walking Bulwark requires a more strategic deployment to maximize its unique abilities effectively.
Assessing its position among its kin, Walking Bulwark is a card that offers a robust defense with a unique twist, providing MTG enthusiasts with a potent tool against multicolored-aggressive strategies, while also serving as a dependable early-game roadblock against attacks, positioning itself as a strategic pick in decks oriented around defenders.

Card Pros
Card Advantage: Walking Bulwark’s ability to bolster your hand with additional defensive tools can help you outlast opponents through prolonged engagements. Each activation can effectively negate an enemy’s attack, preserving your life total and maintaining a better board state.
Resource Acceleration: While not directly impacting your mana pool, Walking Bulwark aids in resource acceleration by allowing you to effectively conserve resources that would otherwise be allocated to playing additional defensive spells, thereby keeping your options open for more strategic plays each turn.
Instant Speed: With its capability to activate at instant speed, Walking Bulwark can unexpectedly turn the tides during combat. This can catch opponents off guard, disrupt their strategies, and force them to rethink their attacks, potentially wasting their resources while you gain an advantageous position.
Card Cons
Discard Requirement: Sometimes, strengthening your battlefield means making tough decisions. In the case of Walking Bulwark, you might find yourself at a crossroads, choosing whether to maintain a strategic hand or to fortify your defenses. The card’s necessity for card discard can be particularly taxing when your hand is your last line of defense.
Specific Mana Cost: Synergy is key in deck-building, and the mana cost attached to Walking Bulwark requires a commitment to its color identity. This specificity can hinder your deck’s fluidity, especially when you’re aiming for a more versatile mana base to accommodate a breadth of spells and abilities.
Comparatively High Mana Cost: Efficiency is the name of the game, and Walking Bulwark has a mana cost that might loom large on your curve. With alternative cards offering more immediate board impact or lower cost defenses, it becomes essential to weigh the benefits against the mana investment demanded by this card.
Reasons to Include Walking Bulwark in Your Collection
Versatility: Walking Bulwark offers a broad defensive capability, suitable for decks that require a reliable shield against opponents’ attacks. It can easily become a cornerstone for defensive strategies while also supporting offensive plays in various types of decks.
Combo Potential: This card holds the potential to combine with cards that benefit from having a fortified defense or with mechanisms that activate upon blocking or taking damage, enhancing both its utility and the synergy within your deck.
Meta-Relevance: Given its ability to thwart common aggressive strategies, Walking Bulwark can play a crucial role in a meta that favors quick, creature-based offenses. Its presence on the battlefield can stall advances effectively, making it a relevant addition to your arsenal.
How to Beat Walking Bulwark
Walking Bulwark presents a unique challenge on the battlefield, being a sturdy defender that can turn the tides in your opponent’s favor with its fortification ability. To tackle Walking Bulwark, understanding its mechanics and having a strategy in place is essential for victory. It is indispensable to have answers such as removal spells or abilities that can bypass or nullify its defending capabilities.
Employing board wipes like Wrath of God or targeted removal cards like Murder can cleanly deal with Walking Bulwark before it can become a nuisance. Alternatively, using cards that grant your creatures trample can help skirt around its bulky presence. Additionally, cards that manage artifacts directly, such as Disenchant, become significantly valuable as they can disrupt the synergies on which Walking Bulwark may rely. Timing is key; by managing resources and spells efficiently, you can prevent Walking Bulwark from becoming an impenetrable fortress on the battlefield.
Ultimately, having the right tools and knowledge at your disposal will enable you to dismantle Walking Bulwark’s defense with precision, maintaining the pace of your gameplay and leading you to triumph over your adversary.

2022-09-09 | Walking Bulwark’s last ability doesn’t actually change any creature’s power. It changes only the amount of combat damage it assigns. All other rules and effects that check power or toughness use the real values. For example, since having two creatures fight doesn’t result in combat damage, an effect that causes the affected creature to fight another creature will still use its power to determine how much damage is dealt. |
