Text of card

Creatures you control have haste. Whenever a creature with power 4 or greater enters the battlefield under your control, you may draw a card.

Cards like Temur Ascendancy

Temur Ascendancy joins the echelons of Magic the Gathering’s enchantments that add value over time. It can be compared to cards like Elemental Bond and Garruk’s Uprising, which also accelerate your card draw. However, Temur Ascendancy grants haste to creatures with power 4 or greater, facilitating immediate impacts on the board which Elemental Bond does not provide. This haste aspect turns formidable creatures into instant threats.

Garruk’s Uprising, while providing all your creatures with trample, also ensures you draw a card whenever a creature with power 4 or greater enters the battlefield under your control. It’s similar to Temur Ascendancy in this draw mechanic but lacks the haste provisioning, making it slightly less aggressive in terms of tempo.

Assessing the value that Temur Ascendancy brings, especially in creature-heavy decks that can meet its power requirements, it becomes clear that this card is favorable for aggressive strategies that aim to capitalize on sizeable creatures right out of the gate. The fusion of card draw and haste makes it a powerful engine in the right build within the realm of Magic the Gathering.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Temur Ascendancy provides a continuous advantage by allowing you to draw a card whenever a creature with power 4 or greater enters the battlefield under your control. This effect can easily overwhelm your opponents with a steady stream of new cards, keeping your hand full and your gameplay options open.

Resource Acceleration: One of the cornerstones of the Temur Ascendancy card is its second ability, granting your creatures with power 4 or greater haste. This seemingly simple benefit can act as a form of resource acceleration, enabling you to utilize your large creatures immediately without waiting for summoning sickness to wear off, which subsequently can lead to quicker victories.

Instant Speed: Whilst Temur Ascendancy itself isn’t an instant, it synergizes well with creatures that can be played at instant speed. Having the ascendency on the board means any large creature flashed in can swing immediately, catching opponents off-guard and maximizing your turns for aggressive plays.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: While Temur Ascendancy does not require a discard outright, it’s important to note it’s often included in decks featuring cards that demand discarding as part of their own cost or effect, which can deplete your hand more quickly, reducing your advantage.

Specific Mana Cost: Temur Ascendancy’s casting cost is quite specific: one green, one blue, and one red mana. This requirement makes it a less flexible choice for decks that do not run on a Temur color scheme, potentially limiting its inclusion only to dedicated Temur builds.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a mana cost of three, Temur Ascendancy can be considered high for an enchantment. Its initial investment may slow down your early game presence as it competes with other impactful three-mana spells you could be playing, especially when considering that the card doesn’t immediately impact the board upon being cast.

Reasons to Include Temur Ascendancy in Your Collection

Versatility: Temur Ascendancy shines in decks that capitalize on creatures entering the battlefield with its inherent ability to grant haste and draw a card. It fits snugly into various Temur-colored builds ranging from casual playgroups to more competitive settings.

Combo Potential: This enchantment is a linchpin in combos involving creatures with power 4 or greater. It serves as an engine to draw copious amounts of cards, turning creature plays into a powerful draw mechanism that keeps your hand full and the threats coming.

Meta-Relevance: In a meta that favors creature-based tactics, Temur Ascendancy is an excellent choice. Its passive abilities enhance your board presence by ensuring immediate impact from your creatures and sustaining card flow, which is essential in the ever-shifting sands of MTG strategy.

How to Beat

Temur Ascendancy is a unique enchantment in MTG that rewards players with both card draw and haste for creatures with power four or greater. To effectively counter it, disruption and removal are key. Cards like Disenchant or Naturalize directly target enchantments, swiftly eliminating the Ascendancy from the battlefield. Denying your opponent’s creatures from reaching the board is also effective; consider board wipes like Wrath of God or spot removal spells like Hero’s Downfall to keep their creatures—and the card-drawing engine—in check.

Alternatively, countering Temur Ascendancy before it even takes effect is a sound strategy. Use counter spells like Counterspell or Negate when your opponent attempts to cast it. If the enchantment does stick, consider leveraging strategies that don’t rely on creatures, such as combo decks or control decks that focus on non-creature spells. These approaches can help you stay ahead of your opponent’s game plan without triggering Temur Ascendancy’s abilities.

Ultimately, staying flexible and aware of your opponent’s potential for explosive turns with Temur Ascendancy in play will guide you to the right counters and help you maintain control of the game.

Date Text
2021-03-19 If Temur Ascendancy leaves the battlefield, creatures you control lose haste. If they haven’t been under your control since the turn began and don’t otherwise have haste, they can’t attack this turn. If they’ve already attacked, they remain attacking creatures.
2021-03-19 If a creature is entering the battlefield under your control, consider static abilities to determine whether its power is 4 or greater. Spells, activated abilities, and triggered abilities can’t be used to raise the creature’s power in time to have Temur Ascendancy’s last ability trigger or to lower it in time to stop it from triggering.
2021-03-19 Once the last ability of Temur Ascendancy has triggered, lowering the power of the creature won’t stop you from drawing a card.
