Cards like Sword of Forge and Frontier

The Sword of Forge and Frontier offers Magic: The Gathering players a unique blend of utility and power-ups. When we look at counterparts such as Sword of Fire and Ice, we find a comparable balance of damage and card draw. Yet, the Sword of Forge and Frontier lets a player search their library for a land card, offering a different strategic advantage while still boosting the equipped creature’s stats.

Analogous to this is the Sword of Feast and Famine. While the Sword of Feast and Famine presents a powerful combination of untapping lands and forcing opponents to discard cards, the Sword of Forge and Frontier assures land drops, potentially smoothing out your mana curve. Neither weapon should be overlooked when crafting a deck that aims for resource dominance and creature enhancement.

Ultimately, the value of Sword of Forge and Frontier in a MTG deck hinges on its ability to ensure land consistency and equip creatures for combat. It stands on its own as a pivotal card in any strategic setup that values both land acquisition and combat readiness.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: When you wield the Sword of Forge and Frontier, one of its abilities grants you the power to draw a card every time your creature deals combat damage to a player. Not only does this bolster your hand, but it keeps you one step ahead of the opposition by replenishing your resources more swiftly than they can.

Resource Acceleration: Another boon of this artifact is its resource acceleration potential. It produces a Treasure token upon dealing combat damage—an additional asset that boosts your mana pool and broadens your strategic options early or mid-game. This can often result in a significant tempo swing in your favor, enabling bigger plays or quicker deployment of your threats on the battlefield.

Instant Speed: The Sword of Forge and Frontier can be equipped at instant speed, providing you with the versatility to react to the changing battlefield dynamics. Keeping mana available means you’re ready to adapt to threats or opportunities as they arise, and equipping in response to an opponent’s moves can catch them unprepared, turning the tide of the battle in your favor.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: With the Sword of Forge and Frontier, players must discard a card, which might strip away a valuable asset from their hand, especially during crucial turns where each card’s potential impact is maximized.

Specific Mana Cost: This artifact weapon comes with a requirement for red mana, potentially restricting its integration exclusively to red or multi-color decks and sidelining it from mono-decks outside the red spectrum.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: Against a backdrop of artifacts in the same category, the Sword of Forge and Frontier demands a notable mana investment to utilize its abilities. More cost-efficient options could be favored by players looking to streamline their mana curve.

Reasons to Include Sword of Forge and Frontier in Your Collection

Versatility: The Sword of Forge and Frontier is an adaptable addition to a variety of decks, as it bolsters both offensive and defensive capabilities. Equipping creatures receives a robust upgrade, enhancing their power and toughness, as well as providing a key protection from two colors.

Combo Potential: The equipment offers a unique effect that can enable numerous synergies and combinations. When a creature deals combat damage to a player, the card allows you to create a 5/5 colorless Golem artifact creature token. This ability works incredibly well in decks that capitalize on artifact-related synergies or those that focus on amassing a wide array of powerful creatures.

Meta-Relevance: Considering the current competitive landscape, the Sword of Forge and Frontier shines bright. In a meta defined by decks that focus on maximizing value from their creatures and permanents, this equipment card can swing games by generating additional threats every combat phase, demanding an answer from opponents piloting control or mid-range decks.

How to beat

The Sword of Forge and Frontier card is a powerful artifact in Magic: The Gathering that can create substantial advantages for the player wielding it. This card not only boosts a creature’s power but also grants protection from two specific colors, making it a formidable force on the battlefield. In addition, its ability to produce mana and draw a card whenever the equipped creature deals combat damage makes it a persistent threat.

However, like most artifacts in MTG, there are effective strategies for overcoming the challenges it presents. Artifact removal spells such as Disenchant or Abrade can directly target and remove the Sword of Forge and Frontier from play, negating the enhancements it confers. Additionally, cards that prevent equipping actions, like Stony Silence, can lock down the Sword’s capabilities without needing to remove it. One can also focus on controlling the creatures to which the Sword might be attached, via removal spells like Doom Blade or Path to Exile, thus rendering the Sword ineffective without a carrier. Moreover, bypassing the equipment through indirect damage or alternative win conditions like mill or poison counters can neutralize the advantage provided by the Sword of Forge and Frontier. Efficient deck construction should always consider including a mix of these answers to remain resilient against powerful artifacts in the current MTG meta.

Rules and information

Date Text
2023-02-04 If the equipped creature somehow deals combat damage to a player on an opponent's turn, the second ability will trigger. You'll be able to cast cards you exile if timing rules allow (so, instants, mostly), but you won't be able to play a land that turn.
2023-02-04 The effect that allows you to play an additional land that turn is cumulative with other effects that do so, including itself. If the second ability triggers multiple times in the same turn, perhaps because there were multiple combats, you will be able to play that many additional lands.
2023-02-04 You must follow all normal timing rules for a card you play using Sword of Forge and Frontier's second ability and, if it's a spell, you must pay its costs to cast it.
