Text of card

Suspend 2— (Rather than cast this card from your hand, pay and exile it with two time counters on it. At the beginning of your upkeep, remove a time counter. When the last is removed, cast it without paying its mana cost.) Search your library for a card, put that card into your hand, then shuffle.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Profane Tutor assures a card advantage because it allows you to search for any card in your library, putting it on top. With this, you maximize what’s available in your deck and ensure better game progression.

Resource Acceleration: The card’s suspend mechanic ensures resource acceleration. For two turns, it gets stuck in the suspension zone. On the third turn, you can play it without spending mana. This way, you can save resources for other pressing needs while still accelerating your game strategy.

Instant Speed: Although Profane Tutor is a sorcery spell and does not operate at instant speed, it falls into a unique category of delayed tutoring. The suspend mechanic can act as a form of speed control, setting up a powerful draw for future turns.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Profane Tutor may seem like an all-powerful card, yet it does require a suspend setup of two turns—which means planning your moves and waiting for it to resolve. This makes it vulnerable to cards that manipulate or remove suspend counters.

Specific Mana Cost: Although Profane Tutor is a potent card, its mana requirement may pose a limitation. It necessitates two black mana symbols, constricting its compatibility only to decks that operate on substantial black mana. Not all deck themes may accommodate this need comfortably, thus denying them access to the Tutor’s distinct capabilities.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: Although Profane Tutor may seem economical at two mana, it is a deceptive cost. It does not factor in the opportunity cost of waiting for two full turns before a card is tutored. Considering this, there may be other cards that offer faster tutoring or card advantage, making them potentially more beneficial for specific play strategies.

Reasons to Include Profane Tutor in Your Collection

Versatility: Profane Tutor presents a solid pick for various decks in MTG, mainly those structured around casting a flurry of spells due to its beautiful interaction with the suspend mechanic.

Combo Potential: The uncharacteristic lack of card draw in black decks is neatly addressed by this card. It’s perfect for setting up devastating plays as it essentially digs you deeper into your deck to find the perfect combo pieces.

Meta-Relevance: Versatile and adaptable, Profane Tutor lends itself to effective use against both aggro and control strategies. Its affordable cost and ability to sift through your library can make it a key player in the current meta-game.

How to Beat

Profane Tutor, an emerging force on the MTG landscape, presents a unique challenge for its opponents. This card, like its equivalent in the world of sorcery – Demonic Tutor, enables players to search their library for any card, but what sets it apart is the suspend feature. This permits a delay in gameplay, fueling strategic planning for subsequent moves while also fostering intrigue and suspense.

Competing against Profane Tutor requires optimized deck tactics, foresight, and a bit of gamble. Favoring decks with counterspells could nullify the Tutor’s influence. A card such as Skyclave Relic can be an excellent trump card, being a threat with its Indestructible ability or acting as powerful artifacts to reap resources. Shifting your tactics chalked with cards like Sadistic Sacrament or Extirpate that can exile cards from the opponent’s library could also hold your stead when up against Profane Tutor.

To summarize, maintaining a keen eye on your opponent’s moves and deck strategy while preserving an element of unpredictability in your gameplay can turn the tide in your favor when against the Profane Tutor in MTG.

BurnMana Recommendations

As we’ve weighed the pros and cons, Profane Tutor remains a tantalizing choice for MTG enthusiasts eager to sculpt their perfect strategy. Its knack for providing card advantage and setting the stage for unbeatable combos can’t be understated. Should you choose to embed it in your black mana deck, do so with an understanding of its nuanced mechanics and the patience for its suspend period. Analyze your collection, align it with your gameplay style, and decide if this card’s unique offerings harmonize with your deck’s symphony. Cards like Profane Tutor

Widely discussed for its potently disruptive influence, Profane Tutor is a distinct addition to your selection of MTG sorcery cards. It notably draws parallels with cards such as Demonic Tutor. This card also allows you search your library for a card, putting it into your hand. However, Demonic Tutor isn’t suspended, unlike Profane Tutor, which remains out of play for two turns.

Demonic Consultation is another card that comes into play. It delivers similar library searching action but with a potential danger as you risk exiling all cards before you hit the one you need. Here, the safety of Profane Tutor is appreciated. Yet another similar card, Grim Tutor, allows you to choose a card at the cost of losing life points, making Profane Tutor a safer bet yet again.

In essence, upon comparing and evaluating the value of Profane Tutor against similar MTG cards, we find that Profane Tutor upholds its unique position. The delayed yet safe action it provides alongside the capacity to proactively disrupt your opponent’s strategies is a key strength, not commonly found within MTG sorcery cards.

DateText
2021-06-18 A card with no mana cost can't be cast normally; you'll need a way to cast it for an alternative cost or without paying its mana cost, such as by suspending it.
2021-06-18 As the second triggered ability resolves, you must cast the card if able. You must do so even if it requires targets and the only legal targets are ones that you really don't want to target. Timing permissions based on the card's type are ignored.
2021-06-18 Cards exiled with suspend are exiled face up.
2021-06-18 Exiling a card with suspend isn't casting that card. This action doesn't use the stack and can't be responded to.
2021-06-18 If a card with no mana cost is given an alternative cost equal to its mana cost (by Snapcaster Mage, for example), that cost cannot be paid and the card cannot be cast this way.
2021-06-18 If an effect refers to a “suspended card,” that means a card that (1) has suspend, (2) is in exile, and (3) has one or more time counters on it.
2021-06-18 If the card has in its mana cost, you must choose 0 as the value of X when casting it without paying its mana cost.
2021-06-18 If the first triggered ability of suspend (the one that removes time counters) is countered, no time counter is removed. The ability will trigger again at the beginning of the card's owner's next upkeep.
2021-06-18 If the second triggered ability is countered, the card can't be cast. It remains exiled with no time counters on it, and it's no longer suspended.
2021-06-18 If the spell requires any targets, those targets are chosen when the spell is finally cast, not when it's exiled.
2021-06-18 If you can't cast the card, perhaps because there are no legal targets available, it remains exiled with no time counters on it, and it's no longer suspended.
2021-06-18 If you cast a card “without paying its mana cost,” such as with suspend, you can't choose to cast it for any alternative costs. You can, however, pay additional costs. If the card has any mandatory additional costs, you must pay those if you want to cast the card.
2021-06-18 Suspend is a keyword that represents three abilities. The first is a static ability that allows you to exile the card from your hand with the specified number of time counters (the number before the dash) on it by paying its suspend cost (listed after the dash). The second is a triggered ability that removes a time counter from the suspended card at the beginning of each of your upkeeps. The third is a triggered ability that causes you to cast the card when the last time counter is removed. If you cast a creature spell this way, it gains haste until you lose control of that creature (or, in rare cases, you lose control of the creature spell while it's on the stack).
2021-06-18 The mana value of a spell cast without paying its mana cost is determined by its mana cost, even though that cost wasn't paid.
2021-06-18 When the last time counter is removed, the second triggered ability of suspend (the one that lets you cast the card) triggers. It doesn't matter why the last time counter was removed or what effect removed it.
2021-06-18 You are never forced to activate mana abilities to pay costs, so if there is a mandatory additional mana cost (such as from Thalia, Guardian of Thraben), you can decline to activate mana abilities to pay for it and hence fail to cast the suspended card, leaving it in exile.
2021-06-18 You can exile a card in your hand using suspend any time you could cast that card. Consider its card type, any effects that modify when you could cast it (such as flash) and any other effects that stop you from casting it (such as from Meddling Mage's ability) to determine if and when you can do this. Whether you could actually complete all steps in casting the card is irrelevant. For example, you can exile a card with suspend that has no mana cost or that requires a target even if no legal targets are available at that time.
2021-06-18 You do not need to reveal the card you find with Profane Tutor.
