You may have Mirrormade enter the battlefield as a copy of any artifact or enchantment on the battlefield.

Cards like Mirrormade

Mirrormade is an intriguing addition to the array of clone spells in Magic: The Gathering. This enchantment mirrors the likes of Copy Artifact and Copy Enchantment by allowing players to duplicate powerful artifacts and enchantments on the battlefield. Copy Artifact restricts its duplicitous abilities to just artifacts but at a lower cost. Whereas Mirrormade offers more versatility at the price of an additional blue mana.

Another card worthy of comparison is Clever Impersonator. This shapeshifter can become any nonland permanent, not just artifacts or enchantments, giving it a broader range of targets. However, Mirrormade’s exclusivity to artifacts and enchantments means it is better tuned for strategies built around those card types, potentially making it a more synergistic choice in certain decks.

While evaluating these options, it’s clear that Mirrormade provides deck builders with flexibility and adaptability, as it seamlessly fits into decks geared towards leveraging the power of other permanents on the field. It stands as a valuable card in the MTG universe for players looking to craft strategies that pivot around the replication of the game’s most powerful artifacts and enchantments.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Mirrormade stands out due to its ability to copy any artifact or enchantment you control. This duplicative nature can effortlessly double the value of your most impactful permanents, giving you a significant card advantage on the battlefield.

Resource Acceleration: With the right target, Mirrormade can become an engine for resource acceleration. Imagine copying a mana rock or a potent enchantment that produces additional mana. This accelerates your ability to cast higher-cost spells ahead of schedule, pressing the advantage against your opponents.

Instant Speed: Although Mirrormade is an enchantment, its versatility acts akin to an instant because it can adapt to the game’s changing conditions. It can be deployed as a response to your needs, whether that’s right before your turn for a surprise play or after your opponent commits to a less threatening board state, making it a tactical asset at any stage of the game.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Mirrormade may not have a discard requirement, but it does rely on having other viable enchantments or artifacts on the battlefield, which could limit its usefulness in some decks that aren’t heavily geared towards such permanents.

Specific Mana Cost: While not aligned with a particular color, Mirrormade’s casting cost demands both blue mana, making it exclusive to blue or multi-color decks and potentially cumbersome in mana-tight situations.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: Mirrormade’s utility comes at the cost of three mana, including two that are color-specific. In the fast-paced dynamics of MTG games, this can be a notable drawback, as the card might sit idly in your hand while cheaper alternatives could provide immediate board presence or answers.

Reasons to Include in Your Collection

Versatility: Mirrormade stands out for its ability to adapt to various situations on the battlefield. It can copy any artifact or enchantment, not just your own, offering strategic flexibility in both casual and competitive play.

Combo Potential: This card opens up numerous combo opportunities, blending seamlessly with strategies that capitalize on replicating powerful artifacts and enchantments to maximize their effects.

Meta-Relevance: Given its capacity to mimic the most impactful permanents in the game, Mirrormade maintains its relevance. It’s particularly potent in environments where artifacts and enchantments play a key role in dominating the board.

How to beat

Mirrormade can be a versatile and potentially game-altering enchantment when it hits the board in Magic: The Gathering. Its ability to copy any artifact or enchantment not only offers a level of flexibility that players appreciate but also can mirror some of the most formidable permanents out there, effectively doubling their threat. Despite its power, overcoming this card requires a strategic approach. Directly addressing the copied permanent often won’t suffice as Mirrormade could be ready to clone yet another threat.

The key lies in targeting the Mirrormade itself. Utilizing enchantment removal like Disenchant or bouncing it back to the owner’s hand with a spell like Blink of an Eye undermines the card’s stability on the board. Running versatile removal that can handle various permanent types, like Assassin’s Trophy or Bedevil, ensures you’re prepared not only for the copied threat but for Mirrormade itself. Timing these removal spells right – perhaps in response to the enchantment’s copying ability – minimizes the advantage that Mirrormade offers and keeps the board state under control.

Remaining mindful of counterplay and keeping one’s own enchantments and artifacts in check can deter the opponent from gaining maximum value from their Mirrormade. When it’s all said and done, mastering the balance between reactive and proactive play is the cornerstone of triumphing over this shapeshifting enchantment.

Date Text
2019-10-04 Any enters-the-battlefield abilities of the copied permanent will trigger when Mirrormade enters the battlefield. Any “as
-his permanent] enters the battlefield” or “
-his permanent] enters the battlefield with” abilities of the chosen permanent will also work.
2019-10-04 If Mirrormade copies an Aura this way, you choose what the Aura will enchant just before it enters the battlefield. You can't choose any permanent cards entering the battlefield at the same time as that Aura. This doesn't target the player or permanent it will enchant, so an opponent's permanent with hexproof may be chosen this way. The chosen recipient must be able to legally be enchanted by the Aura, so a player or permanent with protection from one of the Aura's qualities can't be chosen this way. If there's nothing legal for Mirrormade to enchant, it stays in its current zone (unless it's a spell, in which case it's put into its owner's graveyard).
2019-10-04 If Mirrormade somehow enters the battlefield at the same time as another artifact or enchantment, it can't become a copy of that permanent. You may choose only a permanent that's already on the battlefield.
2019-10-04 If the chosen permanent has in its mana cost, X is considered to be 0.
2019-10-04 If the chosen permanent is a token, Mirrormade copies the original characteristics of that token as stated by the effect that created the token. Mirrormade doesn't become a token in this case.
2019-10-04 If the chosen permanent is copying something else (for example, if the chosen permanent is another Mirrormade), then Mirrormade enters the battlefield as whatever the chosen permanent copied.
2019-10-04 Mirrormade copies exactly what was printed on the original permanent (unless that permanent is copying something else or is a token; see below). It doesn't copy whether that permanent is tapped or untapped, whether it has any counters on it or any Auras attached to it, or any non-copy effects that have changed its types, color, or so on. Notably, if Mirrormade copies an artifact creature or enchantment creature that's normally not a creature (such as one affected by Bring to Life), Mirrormade won't be a creature.
