Card Pros

Card Advantage: When playing Augmenter Pugilist, the opportunity to transform it into the powerful Echoing Equation can lead to significant board presence, effectively giving you multiple threats with a single card.

Resource Acceleration: As a three-mana cost creature, Augmenter Pugilist can be a substantial early game presence. Additionally, its Trample ability ensures that any excess damage is not wasted, effectively accelerating your damage output as resources are pooled into making the Pugilist a formidable force.

Instant Speed: Though not an instant itself, Augmenter Pugilist synergizes well with decks that operate at instant speed. Its hefty body can be a surprise blocker when flashed in, and its transformation into Echoing Equation can be timed perfectly to capitalize on an opponent’s unguarded state or to create instant threats during the opponent’s turn.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: While Augmenter Pugilist offers substantial power, it can be subject to removal before you gain its full benefit. Losing an already played creature to capitalize on its second form can be a risky strategy, especially against decks heavy with removal.

Specific Mana Cost: Augmenter Pugilist demands a specific mana cost configuration, where three green sources are necessary. This can restrict its inclusion in multi-color decks that may struggle to meet the triple green mana requirement consistently.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With its three green mana cost, Augmenter Pugilist has a stronger entrance barrier compared to other creatures at similar power levels. This can ultimately slow down your gameplay as the mana commitment might hinder your ability to play multiple spells in a turn.

Reasons to Include Augmenter Pugilist in Your Collection

Versatility: Augmenter Pugilist thrives in a variety of deck archetypes. Whether you’re aiming for a creature-heavy strategy or looking for solid early-game presence, this card adapts to numerous situations thanks to its efficient casting cost and formidable stats.

Combo Potential: This card’s dual nature – being both a creature and with the ability to transform into an enchantment – offers a compelling toolkit for inventive combos. Its Enhance mechanic synergizes with decks that benefit from creatures and enchantments, adding layers of complexity to your gameplay.

Meta-Relevance: In a game landscape where versatility can give you the edge, Augmenter Pugilist holds its ground. Its robustness against removal and its ability to scale effectively make it a relevant choice to contend with ever-shifting meta challenges.

How to beat

The Augmenter Pugilist from Magic: The Gathering offers both formidable presence and adaptability on the battlefield. Its key strength lies in its size which scales with the number of lands you control, shaping it into a formidable threat. With trample as an innate ability, small blockers won’t suffice to mitigate the damage it can deal when it attacks. One effective strategy to overpower this card is to ensure it doesn’t grow out of control. Land destruction or land bounce spells can effectively diminish its power, making it more manageable to handle on the board.

Ensnaring spells that prevent the Augmenter Pugilist from attacking or blocking can also curb its impact. Cards like Pacifism or more temporary measures such as Frost Breath underscore how controlling the combat phase can provide relief against this powerhouse. Moreover, since the Pugilist has the potential to transform into the powerful Echoing Equation for a sufficient mana, instant speed removal becomes a priority so that it never has the chance to become an insurmountable problem. Efficient spot removal or mass removal spells cast at the right moment could save a game from tipping in favor of the one wielding this versatile creature.

Tackling the Augmenter Pugilist requires foresight and timely responses. Cards that can manipulate or dictate the flow of combat are vital in turning the tide against it, providing players with a clear pathway to victory even in the face of such a substantial adversary.

Cards like Augmenter Pugilist // Echoing Equation

The Augmenter Pugilist is a unique creature card in Magic: The Gathering, with its dual nature bringing versatility to any deck. This card can be seen as a blend between the powerful brawler Lovestruck Beast and the transformative flexibility of Werewolf Pack Leader. Like Lovestruck Beast, Augmenter Pugilist thrives in a deck focused on creatures with high power, offering substantial brute strength for its cost. However, it diverges with its ability to become a game-altering threat when Echowise Encore is on the battlefield.

Werewolf Pack Leader, in comparison, is a card that encourages and rewards you for engaging with combat while providing card advantage. Augmenter Pugilist shares this aggressive playstyle but stands out with its trample ability and its capacity to dominate late game when transformed. Comparatively, Vinelasher Kudzu also grows with each land drop but lacks the immediate board impact and flexibility of Augmenter Pugilist.

These various aspects cement Augmenter Pugilist as a compelling choice for players looking to wield sheer power alongside strategic adaptability, carving out its niche in decks that capitalize on synergy between creature strength and transformative abilities.

Date Text
2021-04-16 Because damage remains marked on creatures until the damage is removed as the turn ends, nonlethal damage dealt to Augmenter Pugilist may become lethal if the number of lands you control falls below eight.
2021-04-16 Echoing Equation affects only creatures you control at the time it resolves. Creatures that come under your control later in the turn won’t be copies of the chosen creature.
2021-04-16 Echoing Equation copies the printed values of the target creature. It won’t copy any counters on that creature or any effects that have changed its power, toughness, types, color, and so on, and a creature becoming a copy doesn’t remove any such counters or effects that are already applying to it. Notably, Echoing Equation won’t copy any type-changing effects that are currently making the target a creature. For example, if you choose a land that’s become a creature, all your other creatures will become noncreature lands until end of turn.
2021-04-16 If the chosen creature is copying something else, other creatures you control become copies of whatever the chosen creature is copying.
2021-04-16 If the target creature is a token, other creatures you control will copy the original characteristics of that token as stated by the effect that created the token. Any of those creatures that aren’t tokens won’t become tokens in this case. Similarly, if the target creature is a nontoken creature, creature tokens you control won’t stop being tokens.
