Text of card

: Note the name of target instant or sorcery card in your graveyard and put it onto the battlefield face down. It's a 3/3 creature with "Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, you may create a copy of the card with the noted name. You may cast the copy without paying its mana cost" and "If this creature would leave the battlefield, exile it instead of putting it anywhere else."

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Magar of the Magic Strings shines in providing card advantage thanks to its ability to untap other permanents you control. By doing so, it effectively multiplies the usefulness of cards already on the battlefield, keeping you well ahead of your opponent.

Resource Acceleration: A master of resource acceleration, Magar of the Magic Strings can be key in ramping up your mana resources. By untapping lands or mana-producing artifacts, it ensures that you have the means to cast high-cost spells sooner than expected, greatly accelerating your game plan.

Instant Speed: The ability to respond to your opponent’s actions at instant speed provides strategic versatility. Magar of the Magic Strings can disrupt your opponent’s strategy by unexpectedly untapping your creatures or other permanents, allowing for surprise blocks or activation of abilities on their turn, giving you the edge during critical phases of the game.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: One major drawback of Magar of the Magic Strings is its dependency on discarding a card to activate its ability. This condition can be particularly troubling for players who have depleted hands, essentially making it difficult to maintain card advantage.

Specific Mana Cost: Building a deck that accommodates Magar can be challenging due to its specific mana cost demands. The card’s requirement of two blue and two generic mana might not seamlessly fit into multicolored or mana-intensive decks, potentially causing consistency issues in gameplay.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: When evaluating the overall cost-efficiency, Magar of the Magic Strings may come up short. Sitting at a four mana value, this card competes with others in its slot that could potentially provide a greater impact on the board for the same, or less, investment, making it a less attractive option for tempo-driven players.

Reasons to Include Magar of the Magic Strings in Your Collection

Versatility: Magar of the Magic Strings offers a unique blend of abilities that allow it to adapt to a variety of strategies. With its potential to untap other permanents, it becomes a valuable card in decks that capitalize on tapping and untapping mechanics.

Combo Potential: This card can be a linchpin in intricate combos, often serving as a catalyst that can turn the tide of a game. It works exceptionally well with cards that have powerful activated abilities as it offers more opportunities to use them.

Meta-Relevance: Given its capability to manipulate the game state by frequently untapping key pieces, Magar of the Magic Strings has a place in a meta where maintaining control and executing powerful turns can dictate the success of a deck.

How to beat

Magar of the Magic Strings is a unique card that can dictate the rhythm of a game in MTG with its ability to manipulate tap effects. Understanding how to neutralize Magar’s influence could be instrumental in tilting the odds in your favor. One effective strategy is to use removal spells that can bypass its protection from monocolored. Cards such as Bedevil or Terminate, which can target any creature regardless of its characteristics, are prime examples. Another key approach is to leverage counter magic when Magar is cast, preventing it from ever entering the battlefield; a Delay or a Counterspell can ensure that Magar’s strings remain silent.

Additionally, employing board wipes such as Damnation or Supreme Verdict can reset the stage, negating Magar’s cumulative advantage. It’s important to also focus on preventing the exploitation of Magar’s abilities by limiting the untap triggers it thrives on. Engage the likes of Stony Silence or suppressive enchantments that can inhibit activated abilities to stop Magar from conducting its symphony. Tailoring your deck with a mix of direct answers to Magar will keep you poised to dismantle the strings of control it aims to pull.

Cards like Magar of the Magic Strings

Magar of the Magic Strings emerges as a unique figure among the roster of enchantment creatures in MTG. Resembling cards like Yisan, the Wanderer Bard, Magar allows players to tutor for creatures, making it a potent tool for deck manipulation. Unlike Yisan’s incremental verse counters, Magar requires a harmony counter, which can only be obtained by casting other spells. This distinctive requirement gives Magar a rhythm-based usage that is uncommon in this card type.

Similarity can be noticed with Birthing Pod, which permits creature tutoring at the cost of life points and sacrificing a creature. Even though Birthing Pod has a more immediate effect by not requiring to wait for summoning sickness to wear off like Magar, the latter offers repeatable usage without additional cost once on the field. Lastly, there’s Fauna Shaman – an enchantment creature that shares the creature searching trait but relies on discarding a creature card as part of its cost, offering immediate utility but at the expense of card advantage.

Considering these traits, Magar of the Magic Strings stands out for its potential to create long-term value for players who build their play around casting multiple spells, thus weaving a powerful network of creature-based strategies.

Date Text
2022-10-07 If a creature enters the battlefield as a copy of a face-down creature (or if a token is created that’s a copy of one), that copy has the same characteristics as the face-down creature (in this case, it’s a 3/3 creature with the two abilities and no other characteristics), even though the copy is face up. Importantly, the noted name is not part of the face-down creature’s copiable values, so copies of the face-down creature won’t know the noted name. If one deals combat damage to a player, its controller won’t create a copy of any card.
2022-10-07 If a face-down permanent you control leaves the battlefield, or if the game ends or you leave the game while you control it, you must reveal it to all players (even though in this case, everyone saw it before it entered).
2022-10-07 If an effect tries to “blink” a face-down instant or sorcery card—that is, exile it and then return it to the battlefield—the card is exiled and remains in exile.
2022-10-07 The face-down creature has no characteristics other than the ones given to it by Magar’s ability. It has no name, no mana cost, no creature types, and no abilities other than the two Magar gives it. The creature is colorless and has a mana value of 0.
2022-10-07 There are no cards in this set that would turn a face-down instant or sorcery card on the battlefield face up, but some older cards can try to do this. If something tries to turn a face-down instant or sorcery card on the battlefield face up, reveal that card to show all players it’s an instant or sorcery card. The permanent remains on the battlefield face down. Abilities that trigger when a permanent turns face up won’t trigger, because even though you revealed the card, it never turned face up.
2022-10-07 You may look at face-down permanents you control at any time.
2022-10-07 You must ensure that your face-down spells and permanents can easily be differentiated from each other. You’re not allowed to mix up the cards that represent them on the battlefield to confuse other players. The order they entered the battlefield should remain clear. Common methods for indicating this include using markers or dice, or simply placing them in order on the battlefield. You must also track how each became face down (Magar’s ability, cast face down using the morph ability, and so on).
