Text of card

When Felidar Guardian enters the battlefield, you may exile another target permanent you control, then return that card to the battlefield under its owner's control.

The loyalty of a felidar is hard won but worth the effort.

Cards like Felidar Guardian

Felidar Guardian is an intriguing creature card in Magic: The Gathering known for its ability to blink any other permanent you control. This functionality is akin to Restoration Angel, which also offers a blink effect, but exclusively to non-Angel creatures. Felidar Guardian, however, can target any other permanent, including lands, providing more flexibility in your gameplay.

Another parallel is made with the card Deadeye Navigator. The Navigator allows for repeated blinking of creatures, which can create a formidable advantage. While it requires a mana investment to activate repeatedly, unlike Felidar Guardian’s single-use effect upon entering the battlefield, both have the potential to unlock infinite combos or powerful interactions with enter-the-battlefield triggers.

In evaluating waving strategies, Felidar Guardian may not have the repeatability of Deadeye Navigator or be as selective as Restoration Angel, but its broad targeting range and one-time mana cost make it an effective and versatile card worthwhile for various deck types in Magic: The Gathering.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: With its ability to blink any other permanent you control, Felidar Guardian can reset planeswalkers for additional activations or reuse enter-the-battlefield effects, often leading to advantageous card interactions and potential card draw.

Resource Acceleration: By flickering permanents with land untapping abilities or those that produce mana, Felidar Guardian can contribute to resource acceleration, allowing for more significant plays or multiple spell casting in a single turn.

Instant Speed: While Felidar Guardian itself may not have flash, its ability to interact with permanents that do can lead to unexpected value at instant speed. It can also set off combo plays with cards like Saheeli Rai during the opponent’s turn, winning the game on the spot before your turn even begins.

Card Cons

Specific Mana Cost: Felidar Guardian calls for a precise mana composition to cast. Taking up one white and three other mana, it can constrain deck building, especially in multicolor decks that may struggle with mana base consistency.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: At four mana, Felidar Guardian’s impact may not align with its cost. There are alternatives that potentially offer more immediate or flexible board presence for a similar or lower investment.

Discard Requirement: While Felidar Guardian itself doesn’t impose a discard requirement, it is worth considering that playing it without utilizing its flicker ability optimally may lead to suboptimal hand management, as you might need to hold onto specific cards to combo with its entering the battlefield trigger.

Reasons to Include Felidar Guardian in Your Collection

Versatility: Felidar Guardian offers a wide range of applications within various deck archetypes. Its ability to flicker any other permanent means it can reset planeswalkers, reuse enter-the-battlefield effects, or even save key pieces from removal.

Combo Potential: This card is infamous for its combo with Saheeli Rai, forming an infinite loop that can win the game on the spot. Its flicker ability opens up a myriad of possible interactions and synergies with other cards to create game-winning combos.

Meta-Relevance: In games that are evolving and depend on dynamic interactions, Felidar Guardian remains a potent piece. Its relevance in the meta comes from its ability to disrupt opposing strategies and generate value over the course of a match, making it a substantial addition to any player’s arsenal.

How to beat

Felidar Guardian stands out in the pantheon of MTG creatures for its ability to blink any other permanent. This can lead to potentially game-ending combos, making it a card that demands immediate attention once it hits the battlefield. Eliminating the threat of Felidar Guardian before it unleashes its full potential is crucial in gameplay. Swift removal spells like Path to Exile or Fatal Push can dispatch the feline ally before a combo can be set up. Board control tools such as Wrath of God or Supreme Verdict also help in resetting the playing field before Felidar Guardian can be exploited.

Countering the Guardian is another effective strategy, utilizing versatile spells like Counterspell or Mana Leak to keep it off the board entirely. It is also important to disrupt the Guardian’s combo potential by targeting its partners-in-crime, like Saheeli Rai, with precise removal or Thoughtseize-style disruption to dismantle the opponent’s hand. Timing is key; by anticipating and responding to the Guardian’s arrival, you can prevent your opponent from establishing the dominant position that Felidar Guardian is known for catalyzing.

Keeping a sharp eye on your mana and a tighter grip on your removal spells will ensure you maintain control against the threat of this cunning creature.
