Text of card

Menace , Sacrifice Dusk Legion Sergeant: Each nontoken Vampire creature you control gains persist until end of turn. (When it dies, if it had no -1/-1 counters on it, return it to the battlefield under its owner's control with a -1/-1 counter on it.)

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Dusk Legion Sergeant provides a consistent way to keep your hand stocked with options. When it attacks, it allows you to explore, potentially drawing you a card and ensuring you make the best plays each turn.

Resource Acceleration: While the card itself might not generate mana or treasure directly, the explore mechanic can help filter your library and potentially land an additional land play, subtly boosting your resource availability.

Instant Speed: Even though the Dusk Legion Sergeant operates at sorcery speed, it synergizes well with other cards in your deck that operate at instant speed. Holding mana for instant speed spells becomes more strategic when your opponent must also consider the potential attacking and exploring Dusk Legion Sergeant could bring on your next turn.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Dusk Legion Sergeant demands a card be discarded for its raid ability to trigger which might deplete an already dwindling hand, potentially causing you to lose vital cards needed later in the game.

Specific Mana Cost: This card requires a specific combination of mana to cast (one black and one colorless), which can present issues when you’re not drawing the right land types or are playing a multi-colored deck where mana flexibility is key.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a casting cost of two mana for a 2/2 creature, Dusk Legion Sergeant may not provide the most cost-effective stats, particularly when compared to other creatures at a similar mana cost that could bring more immediate value or have better synergies with your strategy.

Reasons to Include in Your Collection

Versatility: Dusk Legion Sergeant is a flexible addition to decks that focus on tribal synergies, particularly those involving Soldiers and Vampires. Its humanoid creature type makes it a solid choice for strategies that revolve around type-specific buffs and benefits.

Combo Potential: This card shines when combined with mechanics that play off of creature tokens or enter the battlefield effects. It can easily create a wide board presence in decks designed to exploit such interactions.

Meta-Relevance: As the game ebbs and flows with different deck archetypes, Dusk Legion Sergeant holds its ground by supporting strategies that counter wide-spread token strategies that often cycle back into favor in competitive play.

How to beat

Dusk Legion Sergeant is a versatile card in the world of Magic: The Gathering that can create challenging scenarios for opponents. It boasts an ability that can generate card advantage, which increases its user’s options and potential plays as the game progresses. To effectively counter Dusk Legion Sergeant, a player needs to disrupt the card advantage it provides. Strategies such as removing it quickly from the battlefield before its ability can be used or using cards that restrict the abilities of your opponent’s creatures are helpful.

Additionally, since Dusk Legion Sergeant can impact the board presence with its creature type synergies, keeping the board clear of other creatures that may benefit from its presence can limit its effectiveness. Employing control-based tactics, such as counter spells or abilities that negate the activation of the Sergeant’s advantages, can be an effective way to deal with this card. Making sure your deck has removal spells that can address creatures of its cost and size or using strategies that don’t rely on creatures might also be advantageous.

It’s essential to anticipate and prepare for potential synergy plays that Dusk Legion Sergeant could enable. By being proactive and keeping your opponent’s board presence in check, you maintain control over the game and reduce the impact that Dusk Legion Sergeant can have. Always stay one step ahead and adapt your playstyle to nullify the advantages this MTG card might bring to the table.

Date Text
2023-11-10 If a card with persist is removed from the graveyard after it dies but before the ability trigger resolves, it won't be returned to the battlefield.
2023-11-10 If a creature has +1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters on it, state-based actions remove the same number of each so that it has only one kind of those counters on it. A creature's persist ability can bring it back again if its -1/-1 counters are removed this way.
2023-11-10 If a creature with persist that has +1/+1 counters on it receives enough -1/-1 counters to cause it to be destroyed by lethal damage or put into its owner's graveyard for having 0 or less toughness, persist won't trigger and the card won't return to the battlefield. That's because persist checks the creature as it last existed on the battlefield, and it still had -1/-1 counters on it at that point.
2023-11-10 Once persist returns the creature, it's considered a new object with no relation to the object that it was. Auras that were attached to it won't return to the battlefield. Equipment that was attached to it will remain unattached. Any counters that were on it won't be put on the new creature.
