Undaunted (This spell costs less to cast for each opponent.) Exile two target creatures. For each of those creatures, its controller reveals cards from the top of his or her library until he or she reveals a creature card, puts that card onto the battlefield, then shuffles the rest into his or her library.
Cards like Divergent Transformations
Divergent Transformations is an intriguing spell in MTG, with a unique place among red spells that manipulate the battlefield. It bears some comparison with Chaos Warp, a card that also alters the board by shuffling a permanent into the library and potentially bringing a new one onto the field. Divergent Transformations, however, exiles two target creatures and then delves into the library to find replacements, potentially upgrading the creatures on the board in your favor.
Another similar card is Indomitable Creativity, which destructively innovates by destroying any number of artifacts and/or creatures and fetching that many creatures or artifacts from the library. While Indomitable Creativity gives more control over the number of targets, Divergent Transformations shines in surprise factor and its instant speed, allowing for reactive play. Then there’s Mass Polymorph, a card that exiles creatures you control and digs for the same amount from the top of your deck, akin to Divergent Transformations but on a wider scale.
When evaluating the versatility and strategic depth of creature transformation spells, Divergent Transformations offers a significant tactical edge in the right deck, especially one tailored to leverage its instant speed and creature selection mechanics.
Cards similar to Divergent Transformations by color, type and mana cost
Card Pros
Card Advantage: Divergent Transformations is a powerful tool for altering the battlefield to your advantage. By exiling two target creatures, you not only remove potential threats but also get to cheat potentially game-changing creatures onto the field from your deck.
Resource Acceleration: This card can be a key accelerant in decks that are designed to work with the top of the library. It enables a swift shift in board presence, often bypassing mana costs of high-value creatures and thus accelerating your resource deployment far beyond normal summoning curves.
Instant Speed: Divergent Transformations can be cast at instant speed, offering flexibility and the element of surprise. This allows strategic players to wait for the opportune moment, such as in response to an opponent’s actions or after declaring blockers, to transform the battlefield in their favor.
Card Cons
Discard Requirement: Divergent Transformations demands you exile two creatures you control, which can be detrimental if you are aiming to maintain a strong board presence or are already behind on resources.
Specific Mana Cost: This spell requires a specific mix of red mana to cast, which may not always be readily available, especially in multicolor decks that can struggle with having the right mana at the right time.
Comparatively High Mana Cost: While the potential upsides of Divergent Transformations are significant, its seven mana cost is steep. In a game where pace can be crucial, it might be too slow compared to other transformative or game-shifting options available at lower mana costs.
Reasons to Include in Your Collection
Versatility: Divergent Transformations can be slotted into a variety of decks, particularly those that can capitalise on sudden shifts in board presence, offering a transformative impact that can pivot the game in your favor.
Combo Potential: This card excels in decks built around creature tokens or ones that look to cheat high-cost creatures onto the battlefield, providing explosively powerful combos that can unexpectedly turn the tide.
Meta-Relevance: In game environments where surprise and adaptation are key, Divergent Transformations’ ability to remove problematic creatures and potentially pull game-winning ones out of your deck ensures it stays relevant and impactful.
How to beat Divergent Transformations
Divergent Transformations is a card that can turn the tide of a game by exiling two creatures and letting a player reveal cards from their library until they hit creatures to put onto the battlefield. Understanding how to neutralize this spell hinges on predicting and interrupting this key play.
Counterplay strategies should focus on limiting your opponent’s creature presence, thus nullifying Divergent Transformation’s potential. Efficient removal spells keep the board clear, reducing the spell’s value. Another tactic is using counter spells to prevent Divergent Transformations from resolving, safeguarding your strategy against sudden creature swaps.
Lastly, consider incorporating graveyard manipulation strategies. With such strategies, even if creatures are put into play, they can quickly become a resource instead of a threat. By preparing for the transformative eventuality, you preserve control of the match, ensuring you remain one step ahead in the arms race that MTG often embodies.

2016-11-08 | Causing an opponent to lose the game after you’ve announced that you’re casting a spell with undaunted and determined its total cost won’t cause you to have to pay more mana. |
2016-11-08 | Effects that reduce what you pay to cast a spell don’t affect its converted mana cost. Sublime Exhalation’s converted mana cost is 7, regardless of how many opponents you have or how much mana you spent to cast it. |
2016-11-08 | If one player’s creatures are exiled this way, that player repeats this process twice. |
2016-11-08 | If the controller of a creature exiled this way has no creature cards left in their library, that player reveals the cards in their library, then shuffles it. |
2016-11-08 | If two players’ creatures are exiled this way, start with the player whose turn it is. If that player controlled a creature exiled this way, that player follows the process on Divergent Transformations to replace it. If not, proceed to the next player in turn order. Repeat until the players who controlled the exiled creatures have each replaced those creatures. |
2016-11-08 | The two creatures that are put onto the battlefield are put onto the battlefield sequentially. Triggered abilities of the second won’t see the first enter the battlefield. |
2016-11-08 | You can’t cast Divergent Transformations without two target creatures. If a targeted creature becomes an illegal target for Divergent Transformations after it’s been cast, its controller won’t exile or replace that creature, but the other creature is still affected. |
