Text of card

Exile up to two target creatures you control, then return those cards to the battlefield under their owner's control.

"I'll see you soon, Subjects 25 and 26. I've got a good feeling this time!"

Cards like Displace

Displace in MTG offers a unique mechanic to the game, allowing players to temporarily remove two target creatures they control and then return them to the battlefield. This effect, known as flickering, closely resembles the function of Ghostly Flicker, which also targets two creatures or artifacts. The subtle difference is that Displace only targets creatures, while Ghostly Flicker extends its reach to artifacts as well.

Another card in the same conversation is Essence Flux, which exiles one creature you control and then returns it to the field with a +1/+1 counter if it’s a Spirit. It’s more restrictive in terms of targeting but provides a permanent boost to the appropriate creature type. This can be pivotal in Spirit deck synergies. Contrastingly, Eerie Interlude offers a broader scope, flickering any number of creatures you control. The strategy flexibility it provides, despite its higher mana cost, can lead to significant payoffs during gameplay.

Ultimately, Displace carves its niche in MTG as a versatile flickering option with its ability to protect your creatures from removal or reuse their enter-the-battlefield effects. It shines in decks tailored towards blue-centered creature strategies and holds up well among its peers.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Displace opens the door for multiple uses of enter-the-battlefield effects from your creatures, essentially multiplying their value and providing significant card advantage without losing board presence.

Resource Acceleration: By reusing creatures with mana abilities or those that summon additional tokens upon entering the battlefield, Displace can serve as a form of indirect resource acceleration, setting you up for more powerful plays.

Instant Speed: The ability to activate Displace at instant speed gives you the flexibility to react during your opponent’s turn, disrupt their strategies, or save your creatures from removal, making it a versatile tool in any game situation.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Displace requires you to have another creature on the battlefield to target, potentially leaving you at a disadvantage if your board is clear.

Specific Mana Cost: The dual-blue cost of Displace can be restrictive, making it a challenging fit in multi-color decks that might need a broader color balance.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With its mana cost at three, some players might find that there are other flicker or bounce spells that offer similar or better effects for a lower cost, maximizing mana efficiency.

Reasons to Include Displace in Your Collection

Versatility: Displace provides the flexibility to be included in various types of decks, particularly those that rely on enter-the-battlefield (ETB) effects or need to protect key creatures from removal.

Combo Potential: This card shines in decks that capitalize on ETB triggers. When paired with creatures that have powerful ETB effects, Displace can create a loop that generates significant value for the player.

Meta-Relevance: In a meta filled with targeted removal and temporary exile, Displace can be used to skillfully dodge these disruptive strategies, making it a relevant choice in a dynamic competitive environment.

How to beat Displace

Displace stands out as a unique spell that triggers enter-the-battlefield effects by flickering creatures. To effectively counteract Displace, it’s essential to disrupt its synergy. Targeted removal, such as Path to Exile or Fatal Push, can be used swiftly to remove key creatures before Displace has a chance to be cast, breaking the combo it aims to exploit.

Additionally, players may consider employing counter spells like Counterspell or Mana Leak when Displace is on the stack, shutting down the spell before it resolves. Take note that Displace requires two target creatures, so keeping the board clear of multiple creatures significantly reduces its impact.

Overall, maintaining control of the board and countering or removing targets essential for the loop Displace looks to create, are robust strategies in preventing this MTG card from tipping the scales. By staying one step ahead, you can prevent the flicker shenanigans that Displace offers and secure your position in the game.

BurnMana Recommendations

Diving into the mechanics of Displace can indeed open strategic horizons for MTG enthusiasts. With its power to reuse enter-the-battlefield effects and its instant speed maneuvering, it’s a tool that invites clever playmaking. However, mastery requires understanding both its strengths and its limitations. Crafting decks that maximize Displace’s potential, while also accounting for its mana demands and board state dependencies, is key to optimizing its inclusion.
