Text of card

Renown 2 (When this creature deals combat damage to a player, if it isn't renowned, put two +1/+1 counters on it and it becomes renowned.) Whenever one or more +1/+1 counters are put on Constable of the Realm, exile up to one other target nonland permanent until Constable of the Realm leaves the battlefield.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: As Constable of the Realm enters the battlefield and increases in strength through renowned counters, it provides a significant edge by possibly removing multiple threats from your opponent’s side. This kind of interaction often leads to advantageous trades and card superiority.

Resource Acceleration: While not directly a resource accelerator, Constable of the Realm can indirectly contribute to your resource management. Its formidable presence could compel opponents to spend extra resources to deal with it, effectively setting them back while you continue to build your board state.

Instant Speed: Constable of the Realm benefits from any instant-speed Renown triggers, allowing you to enhance its power unexpectedly during combat. This surprise factor can shift the game’s dynamic in your favor, especially when you strengthen the Constable while blocking or attacking, turning it into a more daunting defender or aggressor.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: To harness the full potential of Constable of the Realm, players often need to manage additional discard strategies, which may not align with the deck’s core tactics, leading to suboptimal plays.

Specific Mana Cost: Accessing Constable of the Realm’s white mana cost necessitates a decisive commitment to that color within your deck, potentially restricting the card’s compatibility with more diverse or multicolored strategies.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: While Constable of the Realm presents a robust presence on the battlefield, its mana cost is substantial, and certain players may find other creatures or spells that provide similar or better effects with less mana investment.

Reasons to Include in Your Collection

Versatility: Constable of the Realm can be a flexible addition to decks looking for both a robust defender and a way to enhance +1/+1 counter strategies. Its adaptability in various game situations makes it a reliable selection for your lineup.

Combo Potential: With its ability to accumulate counters quickly, this card thrives in combinations with proliferate mechanics or other counter-doubling effects. This interaction can exponentially increase the power of your creatures, amplifying your board presence rapidly.

Meta-Relevance: In a game environment where creatures are a pivotal aspect of winning strategies, Constable of the Realm stands out. It can grow to be a major threat, naturally shifting the balance of power. Its relevance in a creature-centric meta cannot be understated, as it can become a considerable force that opponents must address.

How to beat

Constable of the Realm is a card that can be a true force on the battlefield in Magic: The Gathering, especially when it’s bolstering itself through Renown. However, there are strategies to keep this formidable card in check. Control decks that can manage the board with spot removal or counter spells have an advantage here. Instant-speed removal like Murder or Heartless Act can dispatch the Constable before it becomes renowned.

Another tactic is to use bounce spells such as Unsummon, which temporarily remove the Constable from the battlefield, disrupting your opponent’s momentum and forcing them to spend mana to replay it. This strategy is particularly effective as it requires the Constable to achieve Renown once again. Additionally, cards that prevent creatures from attacking or blocking, such as Pacifism, can neutralize the threat without the need to permanently deal with it.

Tackling the Constable of the Realm requires timing and resource management. By carefully selecting the right moment to strike with removal or control, players can ensure that this card doesn’t overrun the game. Efficient handling of this threat is key to maintaining balance and control over the match.

Cards like Constable of the Realm

Constable of the Realm is an intriguing card that finds its place amongst other MTG creatures with renown mechanics. Similar to the renowned knight Loyal Pegasus, Constable of the Realm boasts the ability to grow in power and toughness. However, unlike Loyal Pegasus who relies on a companion to attack, the Constable can bolster its strength independently upon dealing combat damage to a player. A more direct comparison might be to Citadel Castellan. Both creatures ramp up in power after a successful attack on the opponent, however, Constable of the Realm further enhances your control by granting you the ability to exile permanents with its Renown counters.

Another noteworthy compatriot in MTG would be Graceblade Artisan. Like the Constable, it gets more formidable with Aura attachments. Though Graceblade doesn’t have the renown mechanic, it gets stronger for each Aura you attach, which could potentially offer a faster power boost without needing to connect with an opponent first. On the other hand, Constable of the Realm’s defensive utility in exiling troublesome permanents gives it a unique edge in ongoing board control.

These comparisons underscore the Constable of the Realm’s versatile role in MTG, whether by escalating its threat level or providing strategic control, making it a card worth considering in decks that capitalize on the renown mechanic or reactive control strategies.
