Cards like Chimney Goyf

The Chimney Goyf, a newcomer to Magic: The Gathering, reminds seasoned players of the infamous Tarmogoyf with its potential to become a massive threat on the battlefield. What makes Chimney Goyf stand out is its unique twist on accumulating power and toughness based on the number of card types in all graveyards, a trait shared by Tarmogoyf. The difference, however, lies in the Chimney Goyf’s inherent ability to tap for a chaotic effect, bringing the surprises of red mana flavor into play.

Exploring further, we find the Lhurgoyf creature lineage, which also feeds on the graveyard’s diversity to grow stronger. Specifically, cards like Mortivore adjust their power and toughness according to the graveyards’ contents but with a focus on creature cards. Then, there’s Terravore, tapping into the land cards in graveyards to bulwark its own strength. Although these “Goyf” creatures have their own distinct advantages, none offer the same direct disruption capability that Chimney Goyf does with its tap ability.

Overall, while Chimney Goyf continues the lineage of MTG creatures that thrive on graveyards, its distinct red mana traits and tap ability introduce a new level of strategic depth and unpredictability to the game, further evolving the venerable ‘Goyf’ legacy.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Chimney Goyf thrives in environments rich with creature cards. When it hits the battlefield, you’re set up to capitalize on a graveyard brimming with creatures, making it a potent force that grows in strength and threatens your opponent’s defenses.

Resource Acceleration: This card’s unique mechanism allows you to adjust your strategy on the fly. With a scaling power level based on graveyard contents, it accelerates your resource management by giving you a dynamic threat that can force your opponent to alter their gameplay drastically.

Instant Speed: Instant speed interaction is not a direct feature of Chimney Goyf, but it pairs exceptionally well with cards of this nature. Using instants to fill the graveyard enhances the power of Chimney Goyf rapidly, making it a formidable presence that can change the game’s momentum in your favor.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Chimney Goyf requires a player to discard a card to activate key abilities. This can put you at a disadvantage, especially if your hand is already running thin on options. Strategically, this could leave you vulnerable if you’re forced to discard a pivotal card for your game’s progression.

Specific Mana Cost: The mana cost for casting Chimney Goyf is not only specific but somewhat restrictive, as it demands a particular color combination. If your deck isn’t tailored to support this cost, you may find Chimney Goyf sitting uselessly in your hand at crucial moments. Players with more diverse mana bases might find it challenging to consistently meet this requirement, thereby limiting its versatility.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: When looking at the cost versus benefit ratio, Chimney Goyf’s mana expense is on the higher side. This card commands a significant amount of your mana resources, which may not equate to an equivalent impact on the game compared to other creatures or spells within the same mana range. Savvy players might opt for alternatives that provide a better return on investment.

Reasons to Include Chimney Goyf in Your Collection

Versatility: Chimney Goyf’s strength lies in its ability to grow in power and toughness, scaling with the number of card types in all graveyards. This ensures it can be a formidable force in various deck archetypes, ranging from aggressive to more controlling strategies that utilize the graveyard.

Combo Potential: Platformed as a synergy enabler, Chimney Goyf works well within decks that play with graveyard mechanics. It amplifies strategies focused on dumping card types into graves—bolstering its size and turning the tides quickly in your favor.

Meta-Relevance: In environments where diverse card types populate the graveyard regularly, Chimney Goyf thrives. Its value inflates against decks that inadvertently contribute to its growth, making it a potent addition against a panorama of opposing strategies.

How to beat

Chimney Goyf brings a unique challenge to MTG players, specifically with its power being determined by the number of card types among cards in all graveyards. This can quickly escalate the strength of the Chimney Goyf, making it a formidable threat on the battlefield. To counteract this growing power, players need to adopt strategies that limit the variety of card types in graveyards.

One effective approach is to use cards that exile graveyards, such as Tormod’s Crypt or Relic of Progenitus, disrupting the accumulation of different card types. Gameplay can also include strategies centered around graveyard hate, employing cards like Leyline of the Void or Rest in Peace to continuously keep graveyards clear and the Chimney Goyf’s power in check.

Another method involves minimizing the number of card types you play into your deck that could end up in the graveyard, thus curbing the growth of an opponent’s Chimney Goyf. This strategy also helps maintain control over the board state. Depending on the gameplay scenario, direct removal spells that don’t target based on power can be highly beneficial to eliminate a grown Chimney Goyf without requiring a condition that may be difficult to meet once it becomes large.

Date Text
2019-11-12 Chimney Goyf counts card types, not cards. If the only card in all graveyards is a single artifact creature, Chimney Goyf will be 2/3. If the only cards in all graveyards are ten artifact creatures, Chimney Goyf will still be 2/3.
2019-11-12 If an instant or sorcery spell deals damage to Chimney Goyf or lowers its toughness, that spell is put into its owner’s graveyard before state-based actions are performed. If that spell is the first of its type to enter a graveyard, it will raise Chimney Goyf’s toughness before the game checks to see if Chimney Goyf dies.
2019-11-12 Some playtest cards have unusual type lines. To determine whether those cards have a card type not listed above, refer to that card’s Card-Specific Notes in this document.
2019-11-12 The ability that defines Chimney Goyf’s power and toughness works in all zones, not just the battlefield. If Chimney Goyf is in your graveyard, it will count itself.
2019-11-12 The card types that can normally appear on cards in a graveyard are artifact, creature, enchantment, instant, land, planeswalker, sorcery, and tribal. Legendary, basic, and snow are supertypes, not card types.
