Text of card

At the beginning of your upkeep, put a time counter on As Foretold. Once each turn, you may pay rather than pay the mana cost for a spell you cast with converted mana cost X or less, where X is the number of time counters on As Foretold.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: As Foretold is a powerful enabler for card advantage in the late game. Each turn, it lets you cast spells for free, allowing you to save resources while deploying threats or answers from your hand without spending mana.

Resource Acceleration: This powerful enchantment accelerates your resources by ticking up a time counter each turn. This gradual increase allows you to cast increasingly costly spells without tapping your mana, enabling you to maintain pressure while still holding up defenses.

Instant Speed: As Foretold’s unique ability allows you to cast spells at instant speed on each opponent’s turn, once per turn cycle. This exceptional flexibility can keep opponents guessing and allow you to optimize your strategy adaptively, responding to threats or creating opportunities as the game unfolds.

Card Cons

Specific Mana Cost: As Foretold demands a strict blue mana commitment, necessitating three blue sources for its activation. This can be a hurdle in multicolored decks, potentially straining mana bases and limiting its inclusion to primarily blue-centric ones.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: Carrying a cost of three blue mana and one of any type, As Foretold falls into the category of higher-cost enchantments. Its initial investment may slow down your early game, making it less appealing in formats where speed is essential.

Discard Requirement: As Foretold does not itself require a discard, but in order to maximize its potential, it often slots into decks with strategies that involve discard or cycle mechanics. Such requirements can deplete hand resources, potentially leaving you at a disadvantage if unable to consistently draw cards.

Reasons to Include As Foretold in Your Collection

Versatility: As Foretold is a unique enchantment that allows steady play progression by casting spells without paying their mana costs. This flexibility lets it slide into various deck archetypes, from control to combo, enhancing their play dynamics.

Combo Potential: The card excels at setting up powerful combos, working exceptionally well with zero-cost spells or allowing you to maintain mana for instant-speed responses. Its ability to cast a free spell each turn scales with time, making it a continual threat on the board.

Meta-Relevance: In a meta that favors longer, grindier games, As Foretold can become a critical asset, providing incremental advantage turn after turn. It’s particularly strong against decks that can’t remove enchantments easily or that give you enough time to establish its benefits fully.

How to beat As Foretold

As Foretold is a card that has made waves in the world of Magic: The Gathering for empowering players to cast spells for free. This blue enchantment allows you to play one card with converted mana cost equal to or less than the number of time counters on it each turn without paying its mana cost. The crux of the strategy to counter As Foretold lies in disrupting the accumulation of time counters and mitigating free plays.

One reliable approach is to utilize instant-speed removal or counterspells such as Disallow or Naturalize to target As Foretold directly before its effect becomes overwhelming. Enchantment removal cards, like Disenchant, also work well by bringing the game back to a fair state. Another tactic is to apply pressure with an aggressive deck, racing to reduce your opponent’s life total before As Foretold can manifest its full potential. Finally, cards that specifically interact with counters, like Thriving Turtle, can manipulate time counters to your advantage, further hampering the efficacy of As Foretold in your opponent’s strategy.

Understanding and anticipating your opponent’s playstyle is key. With strategic planning and a focus on tempo, As Foretold can be effectively managed, ensuring it doesn’t dictate the pace of the game.

Date Text
2017-04-18 A card's mana value is determined solely by the mana symbols printed in its upper right corner. The mana value is the total amount of mana in that cost, regardless of color. For example, a card with mana cost has mana value 3. Ignore any alternative costs, additional costs, cost increases, or cost reductions that could apply to it. A card with no mana cost has a mana value of 0.
2017-04-18 All counters with the same name are indistinguishable from other counters with that name. Cards from the Time Spiral block that interact with time counters will interact with As Foretold.
2017-04-18 If a spell has no mana cost, its mana value is 0. You can cast it with As Foretold's alternative cost.
2017-04-18 If the card has X in its mana cost, you must choose 0 as the value of X when casting it for another cost that doesn't include X. For example, if there are five time counters on As Foretold and you choose to use its effect to cast Pull from Tomorrow, X must be 0. X can't be 2, even though the spell's mana value would be 4.
2017-04-18 If you control multiple As Foretolds, you may cast one spell for each of them paying .
2017-04-18 If you're casting a split card, only the mana value of the half you're casting is compared to the number of time counters on As Foretold. This is because only that half is on the stack at the time that you choose to apply the effect of As Foretold.
2023-09-01 If you cast a spell for an alternative cost of , you can't pay any other alternative costs, such as emerge costs. You can, however, pay additional costs, such as bargain. If the spell has any mandatory additional costs, such as that of Tormenting Voice, you must pay those to cast the spell.
