  3. While powerful, the forced creature sacrifice upon detachment is a potential drawback.

Text of card

Equipped creature gets +3/+2. Whenever Grafted Wargear becomes unattached from a creature, sacrifice that creature. Equip (: Attach to target creature you control. Equip only as a sorcery.)

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Grafted Wargear offers a form of card advantage by boosting your creature’s output without the cost of using multiple spells. It essentially turns any creature into a more formidable threat, potentially allowing you to outpace your opponent with a single investment.

Resource Acceleration: By equipping creatures at no mana cost, Grafted Wargear accelerates your game plan. Freeing up mana normally reserved for equipping allows for a more efficient use of resources each turn, paving the way for deploying additional threats or holding up mana for reactive spells.

Instant Speed: Though not an instant itself, Grafted Wargear can be attached to creatures at instant speed if the creature enters the battlefield during your turn. This flexibility can catch an opponent off guard, especially if they’ve planned for a certain block or attack that’s suddenly unfavorable due to the instant power and toughness boost.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: When you equip Grafted Wargear to a creature, you must be prepared to face the drawback of possibly losing that creature, as the card forces you to sacrifice it if Grafted Wargear becomes unattached, potentially depleting your battlefield presence.

Specific Mana Cost: Although Grafted Wargear has a colorless equip cost, its initial casting cost requires three generic mana, which might compete with other valuable three-drops, affecting your curve and strategy.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: Even though Grafted Wargear can be a powerful addition to your creature, its need for three mana to hit the board could be seen as steep when you could opt for other equipment or spells that offer immediate impact or more versatility for the same cost or less.

Reasons to Include in Your Collection

Versatility: Grafted Wargear offers a swift boost to your creatures, making it a solid inclusion in numerous aggressive strategies. Its ability to equip for zero mana allows for flexible plays, adapting to the swiftly changing tides of battle on the fly.

Combo Potential: Pair Grafted Wargear with sacrifice effects to maximize its impact. Equip it to a creature, ramp up its power, then sacrifice the creature for value, only to re-equip it to another creature without missing a beat.

Meta-Relevance: In a meta dominated by creature-based strategies, Grafted Wargear can be a game-changer. The power swing it offers can turn a modest threat into a formidable one, often catching opponents off-guard and shifting the momentum in your favor.

How to beat

Grafted Wargear is a unique equipment card that can be a powerhouse in creature-based decks in Magic: The Gathering. This artifact equipment provides a significant power and toughness boost to creatures for a low equip cost, making it an attractive option for aggressive strategies. Unlike other equipment, it comes with the downside of forcing you to sacrifice the equipped creature if Grafted Wargear is removed. This can turn into a vulnerability that savvy players can exploit.

To overcome the obstacles posed by Grafted Wargear, consider using instant-speed removal spells when your opponent attempts to equip their creature. This strategy forces them to either lose the creature or the Wargear, effectively disrupting their plans. In addition, artifact removal like Shatter or Disenchant can directly target Grafted Wargear itself, eliminating the threat before it becomes a problem on the battlefield. Enchantment-based control tools that prevent equipment from attaching or functionally reducing the equipped creature’s impact are also highly effective tactics against this card.

Ultimately, understanding the timing of interactions and maintaining answers to artifacts are key when facing decks that utilize Grafted Wargear. By staying one step ahead and using removals judiciously, you can negate the advantage this card provides to your opponents.

Cards like Grafted Wargear

The Grafted Wargear is a notable equipment card in MTG that can dramatically alter the battlefield’s dynamics. Comparably, we have Bonesplitter, another efficient equipment that boosts a creature’s attack power at a low cost. While Bonesplitter solely increases attack without affecting defense, Grafted Wargear grants a more significant power increase and also boosts the creature’s toughness. This makes it a dual threat on offensive and defensive fronts.

Furthermore, we consider the card Loxodon Warhammer. This equipment adds not only a bonus to attack and toughness but also brings lifelink and trample to the mix. Compared to Grafted Wargear, Loxodon Warhammer’s effects come with a higher cost but provide additional tactical advantages, especially with the lifelink ability.

Lastly, Cranial Plating stands as an interesting alternative, particularly in artifact-heavy decks. While Grafted Wargear provides a fixed stat boost, Cranial Plating’s power scales with the number of artifacts you control, potentially surpassing the static boost of Grafted Wargear in the right deck.

Each piece of equipment carries its unique advantages, but Grafted Wargear gains recognition for its cost-effective and straightforward benefits to quickly turn a modest creature into a formidable force.

DateText
2004-12-01 If your Grafted Wargear somehow ends up on an opponent's creature and it then becomes unattached from that creature, you won't be able to sacrifice that creature because you don't control it.
2013-04-15 You may activate this card's equip ability targeting the creature that it is currently attached to, even if it's the only creature you control. Since the equip ability costs zero, you can do this as many times as you like during your main phases, though it generally won't do anything.
2020-11-10 Grafted Wargear becomes unattached from the creature it's equipping if you equip it to a new creature, if Grafted Wargear leaves the battlefield, if the equipped creature ceases to be a creature, or if Grafted Wargear ceases to be an Equipment. (It also becomes unattached if the equipped creature leaves the battlefield, but the triggered ability won't do anything in that case.)
