Text of card

Skulk (This creature can't be blocked by creatures with greater power.) At the beginning of your upkeep, you may discard all the cards in your hand. If you do, draw that many cards.

"My earliest work escapes me." —Stitcher Geralf

Card Pros

Card Advantage: The recurring capability of Forgotten Creation to allow you to draw a new hand each turn ensures a persistent replenishment of resources, keeping pressure on your opponents as you continually refresh your options.

Resource Acceleration: This creature’s synergy with graveyard strategies can result in significant resource acceleration. Its Skulk ability makes it less likely to be blocked, potentially leading to consistent damage and more room for graveyard play.

Instant Speed: While Forgotten Creation itself is not an instant, it can be cleverly combined with instant speed spells to optimize your draw phases. By discarding the right cards, you might accelerate your plays by setting up potent graveyard interactions which can be executed at instant speed.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Forgotten Creation’s skulk ability requires a hefty upkeep as it prompts you to discard your hand at each upkeep, potentially depleting valuable cards if not strategically managed.

Specific Mana Cost: With a necessity for both blue mana and generic mana, Forgotten Creation’s mana cost can potentially clash with multicolor deck strategies that may not prioritize having enough blue sources.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: At a total of four mana to cast, there are other creatures and effects in the game that might provide similar or greater value for the same or less mana investment, especially when considering the competitive nature of most formats.

Reasons to Include Forgotten Creation in Your Collection

Versatility: Forgotten Creation offers utility in a vast array of deck strategies, particularly those revolving around graveyard synergies and card draw mechanics. It can serve as a key piece in enabling delve or reanimation tactics.

Combo Potential: With its Skulk ability and the weekly hand-refreshing effect, the card excels in setups aiming for madness or cycling synergies, enabling powerful turn sequences and surprise plays that keep opponents on their toes.

Meta-Relevance: In environments where hand manipulation and graveyard interaction play a significant role, Forgotten Creation holds a spot as a formidable asset. It keeps your hand fresh while also potentially disrupting opponents’ plans reliant on predictability, making it relevant in a fluctuating meta.

How to beat

Forgotten Creation offers a unique combination of skills that can be both a boon and a challenge in the world of Magic: The Gathering. This card is known for its ability to provide a fresh hand each turn, offering players consistent access to new resources. To effectively navigate against an opponent who utilizes Forgotten Creation, it’s crucial to disrupt their strategy. This can be done by employing removal spells to take Forgotten Creation off the board before the upkeep ability triggers, thus preserving your hand and weakening your opponent’s card advantage.

One key strategy includes targeting it with instant-speed removal such as Path to Exile or Fatal Push, which can be executed on the opponent’s turn to prevent a new draw. It’s also advantageous to use cards that can exile rather than just destroy, as this prevents reanimation tactics that could bring Forgotten Creation back into play. Additionally, hand disruption spells like Thoughtseize or Inquisition of Kozilek can be used preemptively to remove it from play before it ever has a chance to affect the game.

Adapting a control-focused playstyle with counterspells to prevent its casting will also provide a significant edge. The key is to stay one step ahead and make strategic plays to ensure that this creature’s ability does not tilt the game in your opponent’s favour.

Cards like Forgotten Creation

Forgotten Creation offers a unique twist within the realm of creature cards for MTG enthusiasts. Its kinship lies with cards such as Jace’s Archivist, which also possesses the ability to refresh a player’s hand by discarding their current hand and drawing new cards. While Jace’s Archivist requires a tapping action to activate this ability, Forgotten Creation’s skulk triggers a draw opportunity at the beginning of your upkeep if it’s unblocked, providing a more passive approach to achieving a similar outcome.

Analogously, we find Whirlpool Drake which enacts a similar end-of-turn hand cycling effect when it enters the battlefield or dies. However, this card lacks the continuous utility provided by Forgotten Creation, granting a singular itinerary for hand refreshment. There’s also Chasm Skulker, which grows stronger with each card drawn, and upon death, puts a number of squid tokens into play that’s equal to its power. Unlike Forgotten Creation, Chasm Skulker does not inherently confer card advantage but synergizes well with a full-hand strategy.

Assessing the synergies and strategic implications, Forgotten Creation stands out amongst MTG cards, especially for those strategies revolving around maximizing hand potential and leveraging graveyards, setting itself as a significant card choice in blue-centric decks.

Rules and information

The reference guide for Magic: The Gathering Forgotten Creation card rulings provides official rulings, any errata issued, as well as a record of all the functional modifications that have occurred.

DateText
2016-04-08 If you cause a creature to have 0 power or less, use the actual value (which may be negative) to determine whether it can block or be blocked. A creature with skulk and 0 or less power most likely won't be blocked, but it won't deal combat damage and won't trigger any abilities that trigger when combat damage is dealt.
2016-04-08 Skulk matters only as blockers are chosen. Modifying either creature's power after blockers are chosen won't cause the attacking creature to become unblocked.
2016-04-08 The upkeep step is before the draw step, after the untap step. If you have no cards in hand, you can't draw for the turn and then discard that card to draw a new one because Forgotten Creation's last ability will already have triggered and resolved.
