Text of card

At end of combat, destroy all creatures blocking or blocked by Kjeldoran Frostbeast.

"Two of my Warriors found that the creature was dangerous not only in combat, but also in simple proximity." —Disa the Restless, journal entry

Card Pros

Card Advantage: By dealing damage during your upkeep, Kjeldoran Frostbeast can eliminate key threats on the board. This continuous pressure can result in a card advantage as it forces your opponent to use more resources to handle this persisting menace.

Resource Acceleration: Although not directly impacting your mana pool, the Frostbeast can help maintain board presence. Without the need to cast additional creatures for defense, you can allocate resources elsewhere, indirectly accelerating your game plan.

Instant Speed: While Kjeldoran Frostbeast operates at a slower pace with its upkeep trigger, it’s crucial to note that it impacts board state without the need to cast additional spells during your turn. This allows you to keep mana open for instant speed responses, securing your position while the Frostbeast does its work.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: The Kjeldoran Frostbeast requires a controlled sacrifice at each end step if it battles, which might compel you to discard the card from the field, potentially losing a valuable creature.

Specific Mana Cost: This creature card demands a precise mana arrangement of one green and four other mana, making it less flexible for multi-colored decks or strategies relying on more fluid mana bases.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a cost of five mana overall, the investment could be deemed steep, especially since there are cards at similar or lower costs that don’t necessitate sacrificing themselves after a fight, therefore offering potentially greater and sustained board presence.

Reasons to Include Kjeldoran Frostbeast in Your Collection

Versatility: This unique creature offers flexibility in deck building, allowing for inclusion in strategies that aim to control the board. Given its ability to destroy nearly any creature it engages in combat makes it a versatile defender.

Combo Potential: The Frostbeast can be a key component in combinations aiming to clear opposing creatures. Pairing it with cards that force combat or manipulate blockers can turn it into a repeating removal tool.

Meta-Relevance: In metas where creature-based strategies dominate, Kjeldoran Frostbeast can be surprisingly effective. Its presence can shift opponent’s combat decisions, potentially deterring attacks or shaping the flow of battle in your favor.

How to beat

Kjeldoran Frostbeast brings a unique dynamic to the battlefield with its ability to obliterate creatures it battles. This Ice Age-era card requires strategic thinking to effectively overcome. The key to outmaneuvering this formidable beast lies in its fragility post-combat; it is destroyed at the end of any turn it becomes blocked or blocks a creature. Utilizing this knowledge, a savvy player can force a block with a disposable creature to ensure the Frostbeast’s downfall.

Apart from direct combat, players can rely on removal spells which are especially effective against the Frostbeast. Cards such as Swords to Plowshares or Path to Exile can efficiently dispatch the creature without engaging in combat. Moreover, evasion tactics like flying or unblockable creatures can circumvent the Frostbeast entirely, inflicting damage without risking a frontal assault.

Despite its intimidating presence, the Frostbeast’s Achilles’ heel is its own combat-driven destruction mechanism. Smart plays and strategic spell use ensure that this Frosted beast is more of a paper tiger in the grand chessboard of Magic: The Gathering matches.

Cards like Kjeldoran Frostbeast

The Kjeldoran Frostbeast is a unique card that brings a flavorful twist to the battlefield of Magic: The Gathering. When we line it up with its contemporaries, Lhurgoyf immediately springs to mind, a creature that grows in power and toughness with each card in all graveyards. However, unlike Lhurgoyf, the Frostbeast has its power fixed but brings a nifty ability to the table—destroying any creature it battles, reflecting the harsh wintry conditions of its home plane.

If we delve into similar icy-themed cards, Wall of Ice emerges as a candidate, presenting formidable defense with its considerable toughness. Yet, it lacks the Frostbeast’s offensive presence and deterrent effect. Blizzards and cold otherworldly creatures like Frost Titan also echo the chilling effect of restraining opposing cards upon entering the battlefield or attacking, but they offer utility and longevity that Kjeldoran Frostbeast cannot match with its single-use destructive ability upon being blocked or blocking.

While evaluating these various icy denizens of Magic: The Gathering, it’s clear that Kjeldoran Frostbeast stakes its claim as a situational yet potent defensive deterrent, fitting for players looking to encapsulate the strategic essence of a frosty demise for their adversaries.

Date Text
2009-10-01 Its ability will destroy all creatures it’s currently blocking or blocked by, not necessarily the creatures it had blocked or become blocked by during that combat phase. For example, if Kjeldoran Frostbeast is dealt lethal combat damage and regenerates, it’s removed from combat. Its ability will trigger at end of combat, but since it’s no longer blocking or blocked by any creatures, the ability won’t do anything.
2009-10-01 Kjeldoran Frostbeast’s ability triggers only if it’s still on the battlefield when the end of combat step begins (after the combat damage step). For example, if it blocks a 7/7 creature and is destroyed, its ability won’t trigger at all. The 7/7 will remain on the battlefield.
