Texto da carta

{T}, Sacrifique Ampulheta Purificadora: Destrua todas as permanentes, exceto artefatos e terrenos. Jogue esta habilidade somente durante a sua manutenção.

"Logo vou dormir, fechando meus olhos a um mundo maculado pela carne para então despertar com uma visão purificada." — Sharuum

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Scourglass provides a powerful board wipe, essentially acting as a reset button that can significantly alter the game in your favor. By clearing the battlefield of all permanents except for artifacts, Scourglass can decimate opponents’ strategies while potentially leaving your artifact-heavy board intact. This selective removal allows you to maintain a card advantage by preserving your own valuable resources while depleting your opponents’.

Resource Acceleration: In decks synergized with artifacts, Scourglass can be a means of resource acceleration. When activating Scourglass during your upkeep, you ensure that your other artifact spells and abilities remain on the battlefield ready for use, giving you an edge in rebuilding quickly. This allows you to leap ahead in resource development, while your opponents struggle to catch up after the sweep.

Instant Speed: Although Scourglass’s ability is not activated at instant speed, the threat of activation at the beginning of your upkeep introduces a strategic instant-speed-like element to your gameplay. You can pass turns without committing to a board wipe, leaving mana untapped and keeping opponents guessing. This creates psychological pressure and can force your opponent to play conservatively, potentially stalling their game plan to avoid overcommitting to the board.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: While Scourglass does not explicitly require you to discard a card, it demands a sacrifice in the form of clearing the battlefield. This purge could result in a considerable setback if you’re already maintaining a strong board presence.

Specific Mana Cost: Scourglass comes with a stringent mana cost that includes both white and generic mana. This specificity means that it naturally fits into a more narrow range of decks, potentially limiting its versatility across various MTG strategies.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: Costing a total of five mana, including two white, Scourglass has a comparatively high casting cost for its effect. In many games, the need to hold up such a significant amount of mana until the right moment to activate Scourglass can be a strategic and tactical disadvantage, especially when faster, more immediate responses are required.

Reasons to Include Scourglass in Your Collection

Versatility: Scourglass provides a unique form of board control capable of wiping the field clean. Its ability to be slotted into artifact-themed decks or control strategies that need to reset the board adds significant flexibility to your lineup.

Combo Potential: When combined with other cards that benefit from or regenerate artifacts, Scourglass becomes part of a powerful engine. Unleashing its destruction only to rebuild with your own artifacts can tip the scales in your favor.

Meta-Relevance: In a game where creature-based strategies can dominate, having a reset button like Scourglass is crucial. It acts as a deterrent, shaping the battlefield in a way that is advantageous to decks designed for post-wipe recovery or dominance.

How to Beat Scourglass

Scourglass, a powerful artifact in Magic: The Gathering, stands out with its sweeping ability to clear the board of non-artifact permanents. This includes creatures, enchantments, and even non-basic lands, which can drastically alter the state of the game. Against Scourglass, the strategy shifts to emphasizing speed and resilience. Players often resort to fast aggro decks that can dish out significant damage before Scourglass becomes active. Another effective approach is to use artifact creatures that remain unaffected by its blast, thereby maintaining a presence on the battlefield.

In addition, spells that offer direct artifact removal like Disenchant or Naturalize are excellent for dismantling Scourglass before it can trigger. Counterspells like Negate also play a crucial role by preventing Scourglass from entering the battlefield in the first place. In multi-colored decks, flexibility is key, so including versatile cards that can switch between offense and defense seamlessly can mitigate the impact of Scourglass’s destructive force. Ultimately, the secret lies in a balanced combination of speed, precision removal, and playing around your opponent’s anticipated actions.

Scourglass serves as an enthralling addition to the arsenal of board wipes within Magic: The Gathering. It bears some resemblance to other sweepers like Wrath of God, which also clears the field of creatures. However, Scourglass has a notable twist in its activation tied to the untap phase, offering strategic planning not present in Wrath of God’s straightforward approach.

Day of Judgment presents itself as another counterpart, wiping out all creatures much like Scourglass but without the artifact exclusion. Where Scourglass protects your valuable artifacts, Day of Judgment offers no such discrimination. Rout is also comparable, with its flexibility of being cast as an instant if you pay extra, but it lacks the artifact safeguard that Scourglass provides.

Comparing these options, Scourglass holds a niche that might fit well in artifact-centric decks. The ability to selectively avoid destroying your artifacts can be an immense advantage, making Scourglass a valuable tool for controlling the battlefield while retaining key assets. This strategic potential sets it apart from its peers, carving out its own place within the realm of MTG board wipe strategies.

Data Texto
2008-10-01 Any permanent that’s an artifact or a land won’t be destroyed, regardless of what other card types it may have.
2008-10-01 The only difference between a colored artifact and a colorless artifact is, obviously, its color. Unlike most artifacts, a colored artifact requires colored mana to cast. Also unlike most artifacts, a colored artifact has a color in all zones. It will interact with cards that care about color. Other than that, a colored artifact behaves just like any other artifact. It will interact as normal with any card that cares about artifacts, such as Shatter or Arcbound Ravager.
