Text of card

All lands are indestructible.

"If this world could make a wish, it would be to survive the parasites who loot its treasures and threaten its life force." —Saidah, Joraga hunter

Cards like Terra Eternal

Terra Eternal is a unique gem in the world of MTG enchantment cards, designed to turn the tide in favor of land preservation. Its most direct analogue can be found in Sacred Ground, a card which similarly offers a blanket of protection for lands by allowing them to be returned to play when they’re targeted for destruction. However, Terra Eternal takes it a step further by granting indestructibility to all lands, making them impervious to all destruction effects without the conditional trigger present in Sacred Ground.

Another card that shares Terra Eternal’s spirit, if not its exact effect, is Avacyn, Angel of Hope. Much like Terra Eternal, Avacyn provides indestructibility, but extends the protection to all permanents you control, encapsulating a wider swath of your board beyond just lands. However, as a creature, Avacyn can be removed from the battle, thereby ceasing the protective aura she casts, opposite to the consistent safeguard offered by the enchantment nature of Terra Eternal.

The operative strength of Terra Eternal is evident as it buttresses all lands without discrimination, a trait not commonly found amongst MTG’s spells. Its global land fortification makes it a standout, offering a peace of mind to players aiming to secure their mana base from ruinous fates.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: While Terra Eternal doesn’t provide traditional card draw, it secures an advantage by protecting valuable land resources from destruction. This passive benefit ensures that land-based strategies maintain their crucial mana producers, effectively keeping their hand full of playable resources.

Resource Acceleration: Terra Eternal isn’t a direct source of resource acceleration, but by safeguarding your lands, it indirectly accelerates your game plan. With lands immune to destruction, players can confidently invest in land ramp spells and abilities without fear of setbacks, maintaining a steady growth in available mana.

Instant Speed: Although Terra Eternal is an enchantment cast at sorcery speed, its impact resonates at the speed of the game itself. It influences battlefield dynamics instantly by rendering lands indestructible the moment it hits the field. This means strategies that rely heavily on lands can operate without hesitation, knowing their foundational assets are secure.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Terra Eternal’s enchantment ability does not inherently come with a discard requirement, but its presence in a deck could force players to sideline other cards that might otherwise support their strategy. This can be seen as a form of indirect discard when deck building constraints lead to tough decisions about what to include or exclude.

Specific Mana Cost: With a mana cost that includes two white mana symbols, Terra Eternal may not fit seamlessly into all deck types, particularly those that run on a multicolour or colourless basis. This can limit its utility for players who do not have a strong white mana base or who prefer more flexible mana requirements for their spells.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: Costing three mana, Terra Eternal may come off as pricey, especially when considering that it doesn’t actively contribute to board presence or immediate game tempo. While its ability to protect lands is unique, players might opt for lower-costing cards that provide more immediate impact on the game or that advance their strategic position in other ways.

Reasons to Include Terra Eternal in Your Collection

Versatility: Terra Eternal presents a unique ability to make all lands indestructible, fitting seamlessly into land-focused decks and enhancing strategies where land permanence is pivotal.

Combo Potential: This card offers great synergy with landfall abilities and can be a cornerstone in combos that protect your critical land-based assets from destruction effects.

Meta-Relevance: With the fluctuating dynamics of the meta, a deck’s resilience can be critically augmented by ensuring its mana base remains untouched, thereby securing an edge in various matchups.

How to beat

Terra Eternal is a unique enchantment in the world of Magic: The Gathering. It imparts indestructibility upon all lands, which can significantly alter the landscape of a game. To effectively counter this card, focus on spells that can bypass its protective aura. Direct enchantment removal such as Erase or Disenchant can effectively deal with Terra Eternal, ensuring that your opponent’s lands can once again be targeted and destroyed. Moreover, cards like Merciless Eviction provide an option for a more sweeping solution, as they can exile all enchantments irrespective of indestructibility. By employing such strategies, you can tip the scales back in your favor against this formidable enchantment.

2013-07-01 Effects that say “destroy” won’t cause a land with indestructible to be put into its owner’s graveyard. If that land is also a creature, lethal damage won’t cause it to be put into its owner’s graveyard either. However, a land with indestructible can be put into the graveyard for a number of reasons. The most likely reasons are if it’s sacrificed, if it’s legendary and another legendary land with the same name is controlled by the same player, or if it’s also a creature and its toughness is 0 or less.
