Text of card

As Kindred Discovery enters the battlefield, choose a creature type. Whenever a creature you control of the chosen type enters the battlefield or attacks, draw a card.

Few things are truly "lost" at sea.

Cards like Kindred Discovery

Kindred Discovery stands out as a pivotal engine for card draw in Magic: The Gathering, especially for those who favor tribal-themed decks. It bears a resemblance to cards such as Coastal Piracy, which also grants the boon of drawing a card whenever a creature you control deals combat damage to a player. However, the scope of Kindred Discovery is broader, offering a draw not only when creatures deal damage but also whenever they enter the battlefield under your control, provided they match the chosen type.

In the same family, Teferi’s Ageless Insight doubles up the advantage by allowing you to draw two cards instead of one whenever you would draw except the first one in each of your draw steps. While Teferi’s Insight isn’t limited to creature-related triggers, it doesn’t synergize with a specific tribe like Kindred Discovery does, giving the latter card a special edge in tribal decks. Then there’s Reconnaissance Mission, which can be seen as a blend of both worlds, bestowing the ability to draw a card per attacking creature with a slight edge as it includes cycling.

Examining the unique attributes of these cards in comparison, Kindred Discovery is especially valuable in its ability to accelerate your game plan by consistently refueling your hand in a creature-focused strategy, aligning it closely with the interests of players who take advantage of tribal synergies.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Kindred Discovery enables a consistent stream of card draw as creatures matching the chosen type enter the battlefield or attack, fueling your hand and options.

Resource Acceleration: By drawing multiple cards, Kindred Discovery may quickly provide the resources needed to outpace opponents and make significant plays earlier in the game.

Instant Speed: While not an instant itself, drawing cards through Kindred Discovery can lead to drawing into instant-speed interactions or combos which can be played on an opponent’s turn, adding a layer of unpredictability and responsiveness to your strategy.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: The need to possess a creature that shares a type with others you control can feel like a discard if you’re unable to meet this requirement. This can be particularly challenging in decks that lack creature-type diversity or are facing removal-heavy opponents.

Specific Mana Cost: Kindred Discovery has a blue-centric mana cost of three generic and two blue mana. This necessity for a significant blue mana investment makes it less flexible, often restricting it to dedicated blue or blue-inclusive multicolored decks.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a total casting cost of five mana, Kindred Discovery may arrive on the battlefield later than other draw-engines. This delay can be critical in fast-paced games where early advantages are key, and its cost also makes it vulnerable to counterplay before it can impact the game.

Reasons to Include Kindred Discovery in Your Collection

Versatility: Kindred Discovery is highly adaptable, serving nearly any tribal deck. Its ability to draw cards whenever a creature of the chosen type enters the battlefield or attacks keeps your hand replenished, consistently providing you with options.

Combo Potential: This enchantment offers excellent synergy with decks focused on generating a multitude of creatures or attacking frequently. The consistent card draw effect can easily combine with other mechanisms to fuel an overwhelming board presence or an unstoppable combo.

Meta-Relevance: Tribal strategies remain a substantial aspect of the Commander format. Kindred Discovery fits seamlessly into this deck archetype, maintaining its relevance by supporting a core mechanic that perennially populates the meta landscape.

How to beat

Kindred Discovery is an enchantment card in MTG that can significantly boost a player’s card draw when they choose a creature type and then draw a card whenever a creature of that type enters the battlefield or attacks. This card shines in tribal decks where many creatures of the same type are played, providing substantial card advantage. To counteract this, players might look towards removal spells that can directly destroy an enchantment, such as Disenchant or Naturalize. Disrupting the synergy by targeting the tribal creatures with removals or board wipes like Wrath of God can also diminish the value Kindred Discovery provides.

An alternative strategy involves preemptive measures like using counterspells to prevent Kindred Discovery from hitting the board in the first place. Counterspell and Negate are prime examples of instant-speed interaction that can stop this enchantment from resolving. Additionally, utilizing hand disruption techniques with cards like Thoughtseize can effectively eliminate Kindred Discovery from the opponent’s hand before they even have the chance to play it, thereby preserving your chances of maintaining board control.

Ultimately, while Kindred Discovery can amass overwhelming card advantage for the opposing player, it can be managed through targeted removal, counterspells, and strategic hand disruption, keeping the playing field even and your chances of victory within reach.

Date Text
2017-08-25 If you somehow control a Kindred Discovery with no chosen creature type, its last ability can't trigger, even if a creature with no creature types enters the battlefield or attacks.
2022-06-10 The choice of creature type is made as Kindred Discovery enters the battlefield. Players can't take any actions between the time the choice is made and the time it enters the battlefield. Notably, this means that if it is entering the battlefield at the same time as any creatures of the chosen type, its last ability will trigger.
2022-06-10 You must choose an existing creature type, such as Human or Warrior. Card types such as artifact and supertypes such as legendary can't be chosen.
2023-09-01 You can't choose multiple creature types, such as "Cat Warrior." A Cat Warrior is both a Cat and a Warrior. It's affected by anything that affects either type and unaffected by things that affect non-Cat or non-Warrior creatures.
