Cards like Indoctrination Attendant

Indoctrination Attendant from Magic: The Gathering garners attention with its unique ability to transform itself into an aura, setting it apart from many creatures. Its resemblance to other cards is subtle but worth noting. When compared, cards like Simic Manipulator share the trait of manipulating creatures but lack the versatility of Indoctrination Attendant’s transformation. Moreover, Control Magic allows players to take over any creature entirely but does not offer the flexibility of being a creature when needed.

Exploring further, the card Delusions of Mediocrity also interacts with life totals upon entering or leaving the battlefield, a feature somewhat echoed in Indoctrination Attendant’s life gain ability. On the other hand, neither Delusions of Mediocrity nor Control Magic can assume an offensive or defensive role as a creature. Another comparable card, Aura Graft, permits aura control to switch at instant speed; however, it cannot operate autonomously as a creature on the battlefield.

Thus, while there are similarities in mechanical aspects, the dual nature and strategic flexibility of Indoctrination Attendant make it a unique choice for players looking to control the board and gain life advantages in a single card.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Indoctrination Attendant shines in settings where maintaining a steady flow of cards is crucial. By pulling from the opponent’s deck, it not only enhances your options but also disrupts their strategy. This can lead to a significant edge in longer matches where resources are key.

Resource Acceleration: This card allows crafty players to expedite their game plan. It filters the top cards of an opponent’s library, potentially digging out important spells or creatures. While not directly providing mana, this kind of selection accelerates access to quality resources which is just as valuable.

Instant Speed: The inherent versatility of playing at instant speed makes Indoctrination Attendant a strategic asset. It can be deployed as a surprise during an opponent’s end step or reserved as a response to oncoming threats, giving players the flexibility to adapt to rapidly changing board states.

With these characteristics, Indoctrination Attendant is a versatile card that can pivot between offensive and defensive strategies, making it a valuable addition to any deck that values adaptability and foresight.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Indoctrination Attendant’s ability necessitates discarding a card which can backfire when your hand is already sparse, potentially putting you at a strategic disadvantage.

Specific Mana Cost: With a mana cost that necessitates white mana, the Indoctrination Attendant might not seamlessly fit into multicolored or mana-flexible decks, possibly hindering its inclusion only to those with a strong white mana base.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: Although the Indoctrination Attendant provides utility, its casting cost is on the higher end of the curve, demanding significant resources which could be allocated to more impactful spells or creatures on the battlefield.

Reasons to Include in Your Collection

Versatility: Indoctrination Attendant is a card that seamlessly slots into a variety of decks, particularly those aimed at controlling the board state and benefiting from repeatable life gain and card draw mechanics.

Combo Potential: This attendant can work wonders in tandem with other life gain strategies, acting as a linchpin in combos that capitalize on having a high life total or numerous creatures on the board.

Meta-Relevance: In a game state that favors incremental advantages and consistent board presence, Indoctrination Attendant’s ability to potentially draw a card each turn can keep your hand filled with options and put pressure on your opponent’s resources.

How to beat

Indoctrination Attendant is a unique card that forms an integral part of the MTG universe. With its life-gaining ability whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control, it can be an obstacle if you’re not prepared. One efficient way to counter this card is by stifling your opponent’s ability to swarm the field with creatures. Board wipes like Wrath of God or Damnation can clear the board, rendering the attendant’s ability moot.

Spot removal spells are another feasible approach. Cards such as Doom Blade, Go for the Throat, or Path to Exile can take away the key piece that synergizes with the attendant. Moreover, controlling the pace of the game with counter spells like Counterspell or Mana Leak can prevent your opponent from ever casting Indoctrination Attendant or their support creatures.

Alternatively, utilizing cards with the ability to exile, such as Swords to Plowshares, not only removes the attendant from play but also avoids triggering any leave-the-battlefield effects. Adapting to your opponent’s strategy and maintaining control over the board state are essential when seeking to neutralize the effects of Indoctrination Attendant in a match.

Date Text
2023-02-04 A player with ten or more poison counters loses the game. This is a state-based action and doesn't use the stack. In other words, it happens immediately and players can't respond to it, just like a player losing the game due to having 0 or less life.
2023-02-04 Any other effects of that damage, such as life gain from lifelink, still apply.
2023-02-04 Conversely, replacement effects that apply to the number of counters put on a player can modify the counters placed this way. For example, Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider's last two abilities can apply to counters placed this way.
2023-02-04 Damage dealt by a creature with toxic grants the same number of counters regardless of how much damage is dealt. Notably, if a replacement effect modifies the damage in some way (such as that of Gratuitous Violence), the number of counters given remains unchanged.
2023-02-04 If a creature with toxic deals combat damage to a creature or planeswalker, or if it deals noncombat damage, toxic has no effect and no player gets poison counters.
2023-02-04 Multiple instances of toxic are cumulative. For example, if a creature has toxic 2 and gains toxic 1 due to another effect, combat damage that creature deals to a player will cause that player to get 3 poison counters.
2023-02-04 Toxic doesn't change the amount of combat damage a creature deals. For example, if a 2/2 creature with toxic 1 deals combat damage to a player, that creature will deal 2 damage. The results of that damage are the player loses 2 life and gets a poison counter.
