(: Add or to your mana pool.) As Hallowed Fountain comes into play, you may pay 2 life. If you don't, Hallowed Fountain comes into play tapped instead.

Cards like Hallowed Fountain

Hallowed Fountain is a stand-out land card in Magic: The Gathering. It’s often compared to other dual lands, like Watery Grave, which also enters the battlefield tapped unless you pay 2 life. However, Hallowed Fountain aligns with White and Blue mana needs, whereas Watery Grave serves Blue and Black mana decks. Both are pivotal for mana fixing in multi-colored decks.

Another analogue is the Temple Garden card, which offers the same life payment option for an untapped state, catering to Green and White mana pools instead. It’s significant for those who require a balanced mana base for creature-focused strategies, unlike Hallowed Fountain, which is a boon for control deck enthusiasts.

In evaluating dual land options, Hallowed Fountain holds prominent value in the Magic: The Gathering landscape. Its access to blue mana is essential for countermagic and card draw strength, a critical aspect for any deck aiming to dominate in the control archetype. Its synergy in the popular Azorius control or Esper control decks exemplifies its role in maintaining a strong and flexible mana base.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: With Hallowed Fountain entering the battlefield, you have the choice to pay 2 life for it to come in untapped, ensuring you’re ready to react or advance your game plan without missing a beat. Its dual-land nature effectively doubles your chances of drawing into the colors you need, maintaining a card advantage.

Resource Acceleration: Hallowed Fountain is a staple in decks that need both blue and white mana resources. Being part of the lauded “shock land” family, it can be searched for with land-fetching spells that normally seek a plains or an island, ramping up your mana resources right when you need them.

Instant Speed: As a land, Hallowed Fountain may not be an instant, but it plays well in an instant-speed strategy. It allows you to keep mana open for interaction on your opponent’s turn and yet still develop your mana base, providing you with significant strategic flexibility in both your plays and responses.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Although Hallowed Fountain does not require a discard, fetching this land from your library through specific spells may force a discard, indirectly impacting your hand economy.

Specific Mana Cost: Requiring both white and blue mana, Hallowed Fountain may not fit seamlessly into multicolored decks that do not converge around these colors, potentially hampering deck versatility.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: Coming into play tapped unless you pay 2 life means that Hallowed Fountain can slow your tempo in the early game compared to basic lands or other untapped options, especially when conserving life points is crucial.

Reasons to Include Hallowed Fountain in Your Collection

Versatility: Hallowed Fountain offers flexibility for deck builders, acting as a foundational piece in Azorius-color schemes. Being a land card that can tap for both blue and white mana, it enables a smoother mana curve for various deck types.

Combo Potential: Its presence enhances several combos, particularly in decks focusing on control or lifegain. Additionally, because it counts as both an Island and a Plains, it synergizes with cards that react to those land types.

Meta-Relevance: With many competitive decks utilizing blue and white spells, the inclusion of Hallowed Fountain supports a robust mana base that adapts to fluctuating metagames. Its dual-land status ensures that it remains a staple in numerous strategies across formats.

How to beat

Hallowed Fountain is a profoundly impactful land in MTG, lending stability and mana flexibility to decks running both white and blue colors. To effectively counteract Hallowed Fountain’s dual mana advantage, consider employing land destruction strategies, which are particularly punishing to decks that heavily rely on specific land combinations. A card like Ghost Quarter can dismantle your opponent’s mana base by targeting their Hallowed Fountain directly, disrupting their game plan.

Another tactic is to apply pressure early in the game. Aggressive decks can take advantage of the fact that Hallowed Fountain enters the battlefield tapped unless the player pays 2 life. This payment can put them at a disadvantage in terms of life total, and ultimately, time is not on their side. By deploying threats swiftly and maintaining momentum, you can force your opponent into a defensive position, making their Hallowed Fountain a less significant factor.

Lastly, lean on sideboard cards that specifically hinder decks that rely on dual lands. Blood Moon, for instance, can transform all nonbasic lands into basic Mountains, nullifying the benefits of Hallowed Fountain. By planning ahead and including such answers in your deck, the advantage of Hallowed Fountain can be significantly mitigated or even turned into a liability.

Date Text
2018-10-05 If an effect puts this land onto the battlefield tapped, you may pay 2 life, but it still enters tapped.
2018-10-05 Unlike most dual lands, this land has two basic land types. It's not basic, so cards such as District Guide can't find it, but it does have the appropriate land types for effects such as that of Drowned Catacomb (from the Ixalan set).
