Cards like Gobsmacked

Gobsmacked is a unique instance within the roster of disruption spells in Magic: The Gathering, drawing a parallel with cards such as Mind Rot. Both cards primarily focus on forcing opponents to discard, with Mind Rot targeting the hand by making an opponent discard two cards. However, unlike Mind Rot, Gobsmacked adds an element of chance by needing a creature to connect with the opponent to initiate the discard, making it both situational and potentially more rewarding.

Another comparable card is Blightning, which not only causes the opponent to discard but also inflicts damage, padding its utility in aggressive strategies. While more proactive than the conditional nature of Gobsmacked, it lacks the latter’s element of repeatability through creature attacks. Conversely, Hymn to Tourach is a feared classic for its ability to dismantle hands early on, though it too is a one-shot event, contrasting with Gobsmacked which can recur its effects with a persistent creature.

Ultimately, each card has its niche in a deck builder’s arsenal, but Gobsmacked stands out by potentially stripping opponents of multiple cards over successive turns, an advantage that can tip the scales in a prolonged game.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Gobsmacked stands out by offering players the chance to peek at the top few cards of their deck, selecting the most useful and adding it to their hand. This keeps the options flowing and strengthens your position with each turn.

Resource Acceleration: Shaking up the mana pool, Gobsmacked can also churn out valuable mana resources. By potentially untapping lands or producing additional mana, it propels you ahead, enabling bigger plays and a faster pace to outmaneuver your opponents.

Instant Speed: The sheer flexibility of casting Gobsmacked at instant speed cannot be overstated. Responding to an opponent’s move on their turn or maximizing your mana use just before your turn refreshes, maximizes strategic depth and surprise plays, keeping adversaries on their toes.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Gobsmacked necessitates that you discard a card to activate its effect. This could potentially set you back, especially in the later stages of the game where each card in hand is critical.

Specific Mana Cost: This card requires a precise mana investment to cast, which can be a hurdle in decks that are not heavily red or lack the mana fixing capabilities to consistently produce the necessary colors.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a mana cost that’s on the higher side, you might find that Gobsmacked is a substantial investment for the effect it provides. Given the pace of the game, there could be other options that yield a similar impact at a lower cost, increasing your deck’s efficiency and responsiveness.

Reasons to Include in Your Collection

Versatility: Gobsmacked offers flexibility as it seamlessly integrates into decks that thrive on spell-slinging or direct damage. Its mechanism can easily disrupt opponents while fueling your own strategic plays.

Combo Potential: This card excels in combinations, often serving as a catalyst for explosive turns. Its ability to deal damage while providing card advantage makes it a formidable tool to initiate or complete game-winning combos.

Meta-Relevance: Within an environment where quick plays and tempo advantages decide the winner, Gobsmacked holds its ground. It aligns well with the pace of current competitive formats and can turn the tide of battle in your favor with its immediate impact.

How to beat

Gobsmacked is a unique card that catches many players off guard. As a spell geared toward disrupting your opponent’s mana base, it can pose a significant challenge if not addressed properly. The key to beating Gobsmacked lies in maintaining a versatile and resilient mana strategy. Incorporating a diverse array of lands, spell types, and mana-producing artifacts into your deck ensures that Gobsmacked’s effect is less debilitating.

One effective tactic is to leverage low-cost spells or alternative resources to keep your game plan fluid. Cards with mana abilities that aren’t impacted by summoning sickness, or land cards with basic land types, are less susceptible to the hindrances Gobsmacked can impose. Additionally, having instant-speed removal or spell counters at your disposal enables you to react swiftly and negate Gobsmacked’s influence before it can substantially disrupt your flow. Staying one step ahead and showing adaptability in the face of such setbacks could turn the tide in your favor.

In essence, facing Gobsmacked requires strategic planning and a mixture of adaptive tactics. It’s all about anticipating the disruption and having a countermeasure ready, ensuring that your mana base remains robust and your hand primed to play around any unexpected twists.

Date Text
2022-10-07 If the person leaves the room, or otherwise obscures themselves from your view, the last ability will stop having any effect. If they return to your view, the last ability will function once again. They don’t even need to know that they’ve been chosen; you can tell them if you’d like, but they may take that as a sign to get up and go for a walk.
2022-10-07 If the person leaves the room, you can’t pick up your seat and follow them. Your seat stays with the game with you in it.
2022-10-07 You don’t have to be always looking at the person in order for the last ability to function. It just needs to be possible for you to see them from your seat. This isn’t a gotcha game where your opponent waits for you to blink and then quickly activates abilities.
