Texto da carta

Prevent all damage that would be dealt to you and planeswalkers you control this turn by sources you don't control. If damage from a creature source is prevented this way, Comeuppance deals that much damage to that creature. If damage from a noncreature source is prevented this way, Comeuppance deals that much damage to the source's controller.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Comeuppance is a secret weapon for turning the tables when your opponent overextends. By waiting for the right moment to deploy this spell, you can not only negate what would have been a devastating attack but also deal significant damage back to the creatures and opponent based on the strength of the assault. This can leave you with a solid board position while disrupting your opponent’s strategy.

Resource Acceleration: While Comeuppance does not directly provide resource acceleration in the traditional sense of adding mana or ramping, its ability to potentially wipe out a sizable portion of an opponent’s attacking force without expending multiple cards makes it a highly efficient use of resources. The mana spent can lead to a significant shift in the momentum of the game.

Instant Speed: The power of instant speed spells in MTG is all about flexibility and surprise, and Comeuppance exemplifies this. Being able to cast it anytime during an opponent’s turn means you can always stay on guard, ready to intercept and invalidate a crucial attack or even a series of damaging spells targeted at you. Instant speed lets you carefully choose the most opportune moment to change the tide of the match in your favor.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: While Comeuppance does not require you to discard, the need to carefully plan its use can feel like a strategic discard of an opportunity, especially if you hold it for too long without a situation that warrants its casting.

Specific Mana Cost: Comeuppance demands a stringent casting cost of one white and three colorless mana, which might not always align seamlessly with multicolored decks or those with a more flexible mana base.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: The cost of casting Comeuppance is not insubstantial given its specific effect. In the fast-paced modern game environment, the four mana invested in Comeuppance could be a setback if the anticipated threats do not materialize or if the mana could be directed towards advancing your own board state.

Reasons to Include in Your Collection

Versatility: Comeuppance is a powerful defensive spell that can protect you from a wide array of threats. It’s a fantastic inclusion in Commander and other casual formats where large, game-swinging attacks are common.

Combo Potential: With the right setup, this card can be a game-ender. It pairs well with effects that force opponents to attack, allowing you to turn their aggression into a strategic advantage for a surprise victory.

Meta-Relevance: In a meta dominated by aggressive strategies, Comeuppance offers a valuable counter-play. It serves as a deterrence, potentially keeping opponents at bay and buying you crucial time to execute your game plan.

How to beat

Comeuppance is a powerful defensive card that turns the tide of battle in Magic: The Gathering. Playing around this card demands foresight and an understanding of your opponent’s mana. If they have white mana untapped and enough cards in hand, especially during your turn, it’s wise to proceed with caution. Using tactics like baiting out the card with less crucial attacks or spells can clear the way for your more significant threats later on.

Another strategy is to force your opponent to use their mana during their own turn, diminishing the chance they can cast Comeuppance when it’s most disadvantageous for you. Also, remember that Comeuppance only targets one spell or attacking creature, so diversifying your threats can minimize the impact. Finally, consider direct damage spells and abilities that do not require attacking, seeing as Comeuppance strictly addresses damage from a given source at a single time.

Dealing with Comeuppance appropriately can mean the difference between seizing victory and succumbing to an opponent’s clever trap. By anticipating its arrival and strategically engaging in combat or spell casting, you can outmaneuver this tricky card and maintain the upper hand in your Magic: The Gathering matchups.

Cartas similares a Comeuppance

Comeuppance stands as a unique tool in MTG player’s defense strategies, sharing a spot with similar instant spells aimed at turning the tables during combat. Notably, it echoes the qualities of Deflecting Palm from the Khans of Tarkir set, which also redirects damage from a source to a player or a planeswalker. However, Comeuppance goes further by potentially dealing damage to all attacking or blocking creatures if conditions are right.

Another card with a semblance of function is Mirror Strike, a spell which, similar to Comeuppance, redirects damage. Where Mirror Strike differentiates is in its exclusivity to combat damage from one attacker, whereas Comeuppance can capably handle multiple assailants. Aeon Chronicler provides an alternative approach, though it is not as direct. It delivers card advantage and scales with the game but doesn’t provide the immediate board impact that Comeuppance offers.

Ultimately, in the realm of MTG reactive spells, Comeuppance may not be as ubiquitous as others, but it remains a potent card for those surprise moments when you can turn an opponent’s aggression into a decisive victory. As such, it certainly deserves consideration in decks that prioritize defensive tactics and big swings in momentum.

Data Texto
2014-11-07 Comeuppance’s effect is not a redirection effect. If it prevents damage, Comeuppance (not the original source) deals damage to the permanent or player as part of that prevention effect. Comeuppance is the source of the new damage, so the characteristics of the original source (such as its color, or whether it had lifelink or deathtouch) don’t affect the new damage. The new damage is not combat damage, even if the prevented damage was.
