Text of card

Whenever an opponent casts a spell, you have five seconds to choose a keyword you haven't chosen for a card named Modular Monstrosity today that's been printed on a creature card. If you do, Modular Monstrosity gains that ability. Otherwise, Modular Monstrosity loses all keyword abilities.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Modular Monstrosity provides a unique edge by allowing you to tailor its abilities to suit your game strategy, effectively offering multiple potential abilities housed within a single card. This adaptability can generate a significant advantage over opponents by keeping them unsure of how you’ll manipulate the card next.

Resource Acceleration: Although not directly providing mana or tokens, Modular Monstrosity’s versatile nature can work in tandem with other cards that promote resource acceleration. By choosing abilities that align with your deck’s theme, you can streamline your resource accumulation and maintain a tempo that opponents will struggle to match.

Instant Speed: The capability to assign new abilities to Modular Monstrosity at instant speed creates tactical advantages. You can react to opponents’ moves by picking the most appropriate abilities on the fly, which means maintaining a highly responsive and adaptable presence on the battlefield, often catching opponents off guard during their own turns.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Modular Monstrosity’s ability may occasionally require discarding a card, potentially leaving you at a resource disadvantage especially when your hand is already dwindling.

Specific Mana Cost: This creature card comes with a precise mana cost combination that could pose a challenge for multi-color decks or those running on a tight mana curve.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With its substantial mana requirements, some players might find Modular Monstrosity less appealing compared to other creatures that offer similar or better utilities for a lower investment.

Reasons to Include Modular Monstrosity in Your Collection

Versatility: Modular Monstrosity thrives in diverse game conditions and can adapt to multiple strategies thanks to its customizable nature. It provides players with the ability to tailor their creature’s abilities on-the-fly, making it a flexible addition to any deck.

Combo Potential: Known for its synergy with other cards, this creature can become the lynchpin of combo-centric decks. The ability to accrue various abilities not only fuels intricate plays but can also amplify the power of other cards that benefit from those abilities.

Meta-Relevance: In game environments where adaptability is key, Modular Monstrosity stands out. It can be particularly potent in a meta that’s heavy with targeted removal or in games that go long, allowing it to outmaneuver and outlast opponents through continuous evolution.

How to beat

Modular Monstrosity is a unique challenger on the battlefield of Magic: The Gathering. With the power to adopt new abilities every time a player utters a keyword, this creature can become a formidable opponent. Nevertheless, there are strategies to outmaneuver this adaptive terror. One effective method is to limit the opportunities for keywords to be spoken, using silence effects or removal spells before the ability triggers can stack up.

Moreover, counter spells play a critical role when facing down Modular Monstrosity. By keeping up mana to counter the spell that would grant this creature its new abilities, you can maintain control over the game. Instant speed removals like Path to Exile or Fatal Push can also be invaluable, allowing you to respond to any ability declarations swiftly.

Remember, the key to defeating Modular Monstrosity lies in anticipation and quick action. Keep an eye on your opponent’s mana and the keywords within reach, and be ready to sever the Monstrosity from its growing list of abilities before it overwhelms you.

Cards like Modular Monstrosity

Modular Monstrosity is a unique creature within the Magic: The Gathering pantheon. It shares the modular mechanic with cards like Arcbound Ravager, providing the possibility to transfer +1/+1 counters after the creature dies. However, Modular Monstrosity takes this concept further with its ability to gain countless keywords over the course of a game, a characteristic not seen in the Arcbound family.

When considering the wider world of adaptable creatures, Adaptive Automaton comes to mind. It enhances creatures of the chosen type, similar to how Modular Monstrosity can become a powerful tool adapted to various situations. Yet, Adaptive Automaton stops at providing a mere static boost without the dynamic keyword accumulation of Modular Monstrosity.

Lastly, one might compare it to Experiment Kraj, which has the ability to utilize other creatures’ abilities. While this also offers a level of adaptability, it is dependent on the presence of other creatures with desirable abilities, as opposed to Modular Monstrosity, which becomes a repository of keywords all on its own, reflecting the dynamic playstyle it encourages.

Rules and information

The reference guide for Magic: The Gathering Modular Monstrosity card rulings provides official rulings, any errata issued, as well as a record of all the functional modifications that have occurred.

Date Text
2018-01-19 Each keyword can be chosen only once on any given day. And that counts every Modular Monstrosity you play with that day. You also can’t reuse a keyword with a new modifier. For example, if you choose protection from Demons and from Dragons (totally counts), you can’t choose protection from red later that day. Protection has already been used.
2018-01-19 If you haven’t made a valid choice after five seconds, Modular Monstrosity loses all keyword abilities, including ones its picked up in other ways.
2018-01-19 If you make an invalid choice, you can still make a valid choice as long as time hasn’t expired.
2018-01-19 You may choose any keyword ability that appears on any printed Magic creature card. You can’t pick keyword actions like explore or scry. If the keyword has a modifier, such as a mana cost or a number, you must choose a modifier that’s been printed. Sorry, “annihilator 500” fans.
