Text of card

When you encounter Morphic Tide, each player shuffles all permanents he or she owns into his or her library, then reveals that many cards from the top of his or her library. Each player puts all artifact, creature, land, and planeswalker cards revealed this way onto the battlefield, then does the same for enchantment cards, then puts all cards revealed this way that weren't put onto the battlefield on the bottom of his or her library in any order. (Then planeswalk away from this phenomenon.)

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Morphic Tide offers a unique twist on card advantage. By resetting the board with a new set of permanents, it essentially refills your hand with options that were previously on the battlefield, giving you fresh resources to outmaneuver opponents.

Resource Acceleration: Though not directly creating mana or treasure, Morphic Tide accelerates your resources by refreshing your lands and potentially other mana-producing permanents. This can set you up for powerful turns with newly drawn cards.

Instant Speed: The ability to play Morphic Tide at instant speed makes it a versatile addition to your deck. It can be cast on an opponent’s end step to surprise them with a new board state or in response to an overwhelming threat, swinging the momentum in your favor.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Morphic Tide necessitates discarding a card, a potential drawback during critical moments when maintaining hand advantage is crucial.

Specific Mana Cost: The casting cost of Morphic Tide is demanding in its color specificity, possibly constraining its integration into multicolored strategies.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With its hefty mana investment, Morphic Tide faces competition from other cards offering similar or greater impacts on the game at a lower resource commitment.

Reasons to Include Morphic Tide in Your Collection

Versatility: Morphic Tide serves as a powerful enabler in various deck archetypes. Whether you’re looking to shake up the board in a commander game or orchestrate a grand strategy in casual play, this card slots in effortlessly, adapting to multiple game situations.

Combo Potential: By resetting the table with a fresh batch of permanents, Morphic Tide can trigger a cascade of enter-the-battlefield effects or combo with cards designed to capitalize on such mass transitions, creating new opportunities out of the swirling magical energy.

Meta-Relevance: In a meta where long-drawn matches can benefit from a game reset, Morphic Tide can tip the scales. This makes it particularly suited to environments where a single card can redefine the board’s status quo, keeping opponents on their toes.

How to Beat Morphic Tide

Morphic Tide is a dynamic card that can turn the tide of a Magic: The Gathering match in a heartbeat. This card’s ability to shuffle all permanents into their owners’ libraries then let players draw cards equal to the number of cards they owned that were shuffled this way makes it unpredictable and potentially game-altering. To counter this, deck resilience and strategic graveyard management become key.

Player strategies can include using cards with graveyard retrieval capabilities to recover key cards after a Morphic Tide resolution. Additionally, leveraging cards with flash or instant speed allows players to react in response to the Morphic Tide being cast, thereby safeguarding their important permanents or utilizing them before they are shuffled away. The inclusion of counterspells and hand disruption tactics also serves as a preemptive measure to ensure Morphic Tide never resolves, maintaining a firm grip on the game state. Thus, preparing for the unpredictability of Morphic Tide involves a versatile approach, blending reactivity with preemptive disruption.

In essence, beating Morphic Tide requires a blend of foresight and in-the-moment adaptation, ensuring your MTG deck is fortified against such sweeping effects and capable of bouncing back to maintain a winning position.

Cards like Morphic Tide

Morphic Tide offers a unique twist on board-impacting spells in Magic: The Gathering. It shares similarities with cards like Cyclonic Rift, known for its ability to clear multiple threats off the board at once. Morphic Tide, while resetting the battlefield, also allows each player to draw and play numerous cards, possibly altering the game’s momentum. Cyclonic Rift, on the other hand, offers a one-sided advantage, returning nonland permanents only to opponents’ hands.

Another card worth mentioning is Evacuation, an instant that returns all creatures to their owners’ hands, providing a clean slate. While Evacuation affects only creatures, Morphic Tide stands out by potentially impacting all nonland permanents. This comparison showcases the broader reach that Morphic Tide has over cards that are more selective in their reset strategy.

Therefore, evaluating their utility in changing the state of play, Morphic Tide emerges as a powerful choice for players looking to shift the tide of the game by affecting nearly every type of permanent on the board, while offering a fresh draw for everyone involved. It’s this expansive reset capability that positions Morphic Tide distinctively within MTG’s landscape of impactful spells.

DateText
2012-06-01 After all permanents are put onto the battlefield and you planeswalk away from Morphic Tide, any abilities that triggered from those permanents entering the battlefield, from the previous generation of permanents leaving the battlefield, and from the new plane or phenomenon will be put onto the stack. You’ll put all of your triggered abilities on the stack in any order, then each other player in turn order will do the same. (The last ability put on the stack will be the first one that resolves.)
2012-06-01 Cards such as Sakashima’s Student that can enter the battlefield as a copy of another permanent won’t be able to enter the battlefield as a copy of a permanent that’s entering the battlefield at the same time.
2012-06-01 Taking it slowly, here's what happens when Morphic Tide's ability resolves: 1) Each player counts the number of permanents they own. 2) Each player shuffles those permanents into their library. 3) Each player reveals cards from the top of their library equal to the number that player counted. 4) Each player puts all artifact, creature, land, and planeswalker cards revealed this way onto the battlefield. All of these cards enter the battlefield at the same time. 5) Each player puts all enchantment cards revealed this way onto the battlefield. An Aura put onto the battlefield this way can enchant an artifact, creature, land, or planeswalker that was already put onto the battlefield, but can't enchant an enchantment that's being put onto the battlefield at the same time as it. If multiple players have Auras to put onto the battlefield, the player whose turn it is announces what their Auras will enchant, then each other player in turn order does the same, then all enchantments (both Auras and non-Auras) enter the battlefield at the same time. 6) Each player puts all of their other revealed cards (instants, sorceries, and Auras that can't enchant anything) on the bottom of their library in any order.
2012-06-01 The permanents will enter the battlefield while Morphic Tide is face up. This means the game won’t be on any plane when determining if any abilities trigger because those permanents entered the battlefield, for example. However, you’ll planeswalk away from Morphic Tide before any such abilities are put on the stack. After you turn the next card of the planar deck face up, any abilities that triggered during the resolution of Morphic Tide (including any abilities that triggered because you encountered another phenomenon or planeswalked to the next plane) will be put on the stack. The planar controller will put their abilities on the stack in any order, followed by each other player in turn order. The last ability put on the stack will be the first one to resolve.
2012-06-01 This ability is very similar to that of Warp World, but note that planeswalkers are put onto the battlefield.
2012-06-01 Token permanents a player owns will count toward the number of cards that player reveals. They’ll be shuffled into that player’s library and subsequently cease to exist. A token’s owner is the player under whose control it first entered the battlefield.
