Text of card

You may choose new targets for target spell.

"Your strategy is marvelous. I've just made a few minor adjustments." —Veris, watcher of Indi Keep

Card Pros

Card Advantage: The power of Redirect lies in its ability to turn an opponent’s spell against them without losing a card in the process. This form of card advantage can shift the game’s momentum significantly, especially when high-impact spells are redirected to more favorable targets.

Resource Acceleration: While Redirect itself doesn’t generate additional resources, it effectively saves resources by negating the need for additional answers to threats. By using just a single card to counteract what could have been a costly spell for you, it accelerates your game plan by keeping your hand full and your options open.

Instant Speed: The quick reflexes required for a game of MTG are embodied in Redirect’s instant speed. This gives players the flexibility to wait until the most opportune moment to alter the course of the game, catching opponents off guard and turning their own strategies against them. The instant nature of this spell introduces an element of surprise and tactical depth that can be a turning point in any match.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Redirect demands discarding a card upon casting. This might strain your hand, especially when your cards in hand are pivotal for maintaining board control or executing your strategy.

Specific Mana Cost: Redirect’s casting cost necessitates two blue mana, making it less flexible outside of mono-blue or two-color decks and challenging to cast in a multi-colored deck with a poor mana base.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: The requirement of three mana to cast Redirect can be steep considering you are not advancing your own board state. Alternative lower-cost spells might provide a better tempo play or suit more aggressive strategies.

Reasons to Include in Your Collection

Versatility: Redirect is unique as it provides strategic flexibility across various playstyles. With its ability to change the target of spells, it can adapt to numerous situations, making it a valuable addition to control or combo decks that thrive on manipulating the game’s flow.

Combo Potential: This card enables intriguing combinations, allowing players to turn their opponents’ strengths against them. By redirecting key spells, you can potentially disrupt opponents’ plans while advancing your own board state.

Meta-Relevance: Given that the MTG scene often sees a high volume of targeted spells, Redirect holds a place in the meta by offering a versatile counterplay option. Its inclusion in your deck can provide an edge against decks relying heavily on direct spells or targeted removal.

How to beat

Redirect, the intriguing instant spell that can turn the tide of a MTG matchup, challenges players to think strategically. Its ability to change the target of a single spell with a single blue mana makes it both a surprise element and a potential game-changer. The key to outsmarting this card lies in timing and the clever use of backup plans.

One reliable strategy involves baiting out the Redirect with a less critical spell, then following up with your actual key play once it’s been used. Another approach is to hold onto spells that can’t be redirected or to deploy spells when the opponent likely doesn’t have the required blue mana open. Additionally, playing around Redirect by using spells that have multiple targets or by simply waiting until the opponent is tapped out can reduce its impact significantly.

Overall, beating Redirect requires a blend of patience, observation, and controlled aggression. Careful sequencing of spells and anticipation of the opponent’s mana availability can neutralize Redirect’s influence and keep control of the game activity in your hands.

Cards like Redirect

Redirect is an intriguing tactical spell within Magic: The Gathering, known for its unique ability to change the target of a spell with a single blue mana value. A great parallel is found in the card Swerve, which offers a similar redirection effect, albeit at a higher cost—requiring both red and blue mana. Although slightly more expensive, Swerve stands as a versatile option within decks that run on both colors.

Another counterpart is Misdirection, which achieves comparable outcomes by changing the target of a spell. It comes with a heftier cost at three blue mana, but it boasts the advantage of an alternate casting option—exiling another blue card from your hand rather than paying the mana cost, potentially making it free to play.

Evaluating Redirect next to its counterparts, it holds a solid place as a strategic tool. Its single blue mana value makes it incredibly accessible and efficient for redirecting threats or pivotal spells at critical moments, without the baggage of additional colors or more expensive alternative costs. Redirect provides players with the potential to swing a game in their favor with its straightforward and cost-effective nature.

DateText
2010-08-15 If the targeted spell is modal (that is, it says “Choose one —” or the like), you can’t choose a different mode.
2010-08-15 If you cast Redirect targeting a spell that targets a spell on the stack (like Cancel does, for example), you can’t change that spell’s target to itself. You can, however, change that spell’s target to Redirect. If you do, that spell won’t resolve when it tries to resolve because Redirect will have left the stack by then.
2010-08-15 Redirect can target any spell, not just an instant or sorcery spell. For example, you could use it to change the target of an Aura spell. However, if the targeted spell has no targets (for example, if it’s an instant or sorcery spell that doesn’t specifically use the word “target,” or if it’s a creature spell), Redirect won’t have any effect on it.
2010-08-15 You may change any number of the targets, including all of them or none of them. If, for one of the targets, you can’t choose a new legal target, then it remains unchanged (even if the current target is illegal).
