Text of card

: Regenerate Cudgel Troll. (The next time this creature would be destroyed this turn, it isn't. Instead tap it, remove all damage from it, and remove it from combat.)

Card Pros

Card Advantage: The Cudgel Troll offers resilient board presence which can effectively act as card advantage. If your opponent is forced to use multiple resources to deal with this creature, you’re coming out ahead.

Resource Acceleration: Although Cudgel Troll doesn’t directly accelerate resources, its regenerate ability means it can serve as a consistent attacker or blocker. This stability allows you to devote your mana to deploying other threats or answers, thus indirectly contributing to better resource distribution over time.

Instant Speed: The regeneration of Cudgel Troll can be activated at instant speed. This gives you the flexibility to respond to your opponent’s actions during their turn, preserving your troll against most removal spells and during combat.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: While Cudgel Troll offers a robust regeneration ability, activating it requires you to hold up crucial mana each turn. This can lead to a less flexible game strategy as you might need to forego developing your board or playing other spells to ensure its survival.

Specific Mana Cost: Demanding a dedicated green mana commitment, Cudgel Troll requires at least two green mana to cast. This may pose a deckbuilding constraint, especially in multicolored decks, where mana needs to be carefully balanced to accommodate your broader strategy.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a casting cost of two generic and two green mana, Cudgel Troll may arrive slightly later in the game when players could potentially drop more impactful creatures. This mana investment sometimes competes with other valuable four-mana spells that could offer direct removal, stronger board presence, or immediate card advantage.

Reasons to Include Cudgel Troll in Your Collection

Versatility: Cudgel Troll is an adaptable card that can be easily integrated into various green-themed decks. Its resilience to removal thanks to regeneration makes it a solid fit in decks that need a sturdy creature on the battlefield.

Combo Potential: Combining Cudgel Troll with cards that benefit from or grant +1/+1 counters can create powerful synergies. Its ability to stay on the board gives you a reliable recipient for such buffs, enhancing your combo options.

Meta-Relevance: In an environment where spot removal is prevalent, Cudgel Troll maintains its standing as a persistent threat. Its capability to regenerate makes it a formidable inclusion in your lineup, particularly when facing control decks that rely heavily on single-target spells to maintain board control.

How to beat

Cudgel Troll presents a challenge on the battlefield with its resilience and the ability to regenerate. This creature card can prove to be a thorn in the side for many players, ensuring its survival turn after turn. Facing this formidable foe in MTG requires strategic planning and a keen understanding of its strengths and weaknesses.

Overcoming Cudgel Troll often comes down to circumventing its regeneration ability. Employing removal spells that don’t destroy but instead exile, bounce, or force sacrifice can effectively neutralize it. Examples of such tactics include using Path to Exile for a swift and permanent solution or compelling your opponent to sacrifice creatures through edict effects.

Moreover, clever timing can make all the difference. Cudgel Troll’s ability hinges on the availability of green mana. Thus, acting when your opponent’s mana is tapped out, thereby preventing the utilization of the regeneration ability, can be the key to outmaneuvering them. In summary, while Cudgel Troll can be a persistent adversary in the game, a combination of strategic spell choices and impeccable timing will put you firmly in control of the duel.

Cards like Cudgel Troll

Cudgel Troll, a resilient creature card in MTG, holds its ground with an innate ability to regenerate. This characteristic makes it somewhat similar to cards like Thrun, the Last Troll, which also boasts a regenerative trait and cannot be countered. However, Thrun offers additional protection with its hexproof ability, ensuring it can’t be targeted by spells or abilities your opponents control.

Moving into the grouping of green creatures with regenerative qualities, we encounter Troll Ascetic. The Ascetic carries a slightly lower cost and similarly has hexproof, making it a tough card for opponents to deal with directly. Unlike Cudgel Troll, it does not have the same power and toughness, which makes Cudgel Troll superior in head-to-head combat scenarios where board presence is key.

While assessing these similar green cards, it’s clear that Cudgel Troll fits well within a strategy focused on maintaining a persistent threat. Its simplicity and self-sufficient regenerative capability present a solid choice for players looking to beef up their lineup with dependable creature cards that can stand the test of battle in MTG.

DateText
2010-08-15 Activating Cudgel Troll’s ability causes a “regeneration shield” to be created for it. The next time Cudgel Troll would be destroyed that turn, the regeneration shield is used up instead. This works only if Cudgel Troll is dealt lethal damage, dealt damage from a source with deathtouch, or affected by a spell or ability that says to “destroy” it. Other effects that cause Cudgel Troll to be put into the graveyard (such as reducing its toughness to 0 or sacrificing it) don’t destroy it, so regeneration won’t save it. If it hasn’t been used, the regeneration shield goes away as the turn ends.
2010-08-15 If Cudgel Troll is dealt lethal damage and is dealt damage by a source with deathtouch during the same combat damage step, a single regeneration shield will save it.
2010-08-15 To work, the regeneration shield must be created before Cudgel Troll is destroyed. This usually means activating its ability during the declare blockers step, or in response to a spell or ability that would destroy it.
