Choose four. You may choose the same mode more than once. • Create a 2/2 Citizen creature token that's all colors. • Return target permanent card from your graveyard to your hand. • Proliferate. • You gain 4 life.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Planewide Celebration presents players with a unique choice mechanic that can lead to significant card advantage. You have the option to return any number of permanent cards with different names from your graveyard to your hand, ensuring that the resources you need are right at your fingertips when you need them the most.

Resource Acceleration: This versatile card also offers a potent resource acceleration by allowing you to create a multitude of 2/2 Citizen creature tokens. These tokens not only bolster your defense and increase your offensive capabilities but can also be converted into a variety of other resources or advantages on the battlefield.

Instant Speed: Although Planewide Celebration is a sorcery, it plays exceptionally well with cards that can be cast at instant speed. The ability to proliferate up to four times can instantaneously augment the number of +1/+1 counters or loyalty counters right before your opponent’s turn ends, allowing for a sudden and potentially game-changing shift in the state of the game.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: While there’s no direct discard attached to Planewide Celebration, it can indirectly lead to discarding due to hand size limits if you generate too much card advantage without a way to deploy extra cards quickly.

Specific Mana Cost: This spell requires a significant presence of green mana, which may not integrate seamlessly into multicolor decks that can’t consistently meet the color requirements.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a seven mana cost, Planewide Celebration demands a hefty investment, potentially setting back tempo in faster-paced games where earlier threats and responses are critical.

Reasons to Include Planewide Celebration in Your Collection

Versatility: Planewide Celebration offers a range of options, making it a highly flexible card for different situations. Whether you need creature tokens, life gain, to return a permanent from your graveyard, or proliferate, this card can adjust to your current game state.

Combo Potential: Its proliferate option can be pivotal in decks that capitalize on +1/+1 counters or loyalty counters, enabling various synergies and enhancing strategies centered around counters.

Meta-Relevance: In a meta with diverse permanent types and counter strategies, Planewide Celebration’s ability to interact with both can be exceptionally beneficial. It becomes impactful in games that stretch out, allowing you to swing the momentum in your favor.

How to Beat Planewide Celebration

Planewide Celebration is a versatile card in Magic: The Gathering that can present a challenge to overcome. This multicolored sorcery allows players to choose four out of seven effects, potentially regaining life, returning permanents from the graveyard to the battlefield, proliferating, or even creating citizen creature tokens. But don’t let its flexibility intimidate you.

Your best bet to counter this spell is by employing disruption tactics before it hits the table. Counterspells are your first line of defense, negating Planewide Celebration’s cast altogether. If you’re not in blue, look towards strategies that limit the benefit your opponent can get from their graveyard with cards like Leyline of the Void or use instant-speed removal to deal with the tokens it generates.

Another strategy is outpacing the mana-intensive nature of this card with an aggressive deck, pressuring your opponent’s life total before they have the chance to stabilize with such an expensive spell. Always be proactive, and advance your board state while keeping an eye on Planewide Celebration’s capabilities to preemptively mitigate its impact on the game.

Cards like Planewide Celebration

Planewide Celebration is a versatile card from Magic: The Gathering that stands out in its field. It shares similarities with a group of cards known for their multiplicity of choices, such as Cryptic Command. Both cards offer a selection of effects to choose from, providing strategic flexibility in gameplay. Planewide Celebration, however, expands upon this concept by allowing the player to choose the same effect more than once or mix different effects to tailor the outcome to the current game state.

Peer into the multidimensional aspect of modal cards with Austere Command, where you also pick from a menu of devastating effects. However, in contrast to Planewide Celebration, which is geared towards enhancing your own board position and life total, Austere Command can potentially wipe the board clean of threats or specific types of permanents. Command the Dreadhorde is another comparison point, facilitating a kind of graveyard reanimation that can bring a surge to your side of the battlefield, similar to Celebration’s ability to return permanents from the graveyard to your hand.

Ultimately, Planewide Celebration carves its niche within Magic: The Gathering as a powerful enabler of comeback mechanics and resilience, not just in what it retrieves but also in how it fortifies through proliferation and life gain, making it a distinct and noteworthy choice in its category.

DateText
2019-05-03 A permanent card is an artifact, creature, enchantment, land, or planeswalker card.
2019-05-03 If the second mode is chosen at least once, and every target permanent card is an illegal target by the time Planewide Celebration tries to resolve, the spell doesn’t resolve. None of the other chosen modes happen. If only some of the targets are illegal targets but at least one is still legal, you still do as much as you can and the illegal targets aren’t affected.
2019-05-03 No matter which combination of modes you choose, you always follow the instructions of Planewide Celebration in the order they are written. If a mode is chosen more than once, you perform that mode’s instruction that many times sequentially.
2021-03-19 If a permanent has +1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters on it, they’re removed in pairs as a state-based action so that the permanent has only one of those kinds of counters on it.
2021-03-19 Players can respond to a spell or ability whose effect includes proliferating. Once that spell or ability starts to resolve, however, and its controller chooses which permanents and players will get new counters, it’s too late for anyone to respond.
2021-03-19 To proliferate, you can choose any permanent that has a counter, including ones controlled by opponents. You can’t choose cards in any zone other than the battlefield, even if they have counters on them.
2021-03-19 You don’t have to choose every permanent or player that has a counter, only the ones you want to add another counter to. Since “any number” includes zero, you don’t have to choose any permanents at all, and you don’t have to choose any players at all.
