Text of card

Must attack each turn if possible. Can't be blocked by walls.

We had taken refuge in a small cave, thinking the entrance was too narrow for it to follow. To our horror, its gigantic head smashed into the mountainside, ripping itself a new entrance.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: The Juggernaut card serves as a powerful threat on the board, often demanding an answer from your opponent. Its formidable presence can shift the game’s momentum in your favor and can help you outpace your opponent by forcing them to deal with it, effectively giving you card advantage through indirect pressure.

Resource Acceleration: While Juggernaut itself doesn’t directly accelerate resources, its cost-to-power ratio puts a significant presence on the board early in the game, giving you an early game tempo that can lead to quicker victories. This can be particularly useful in formats where early board dominance is key.

Instant Speed: Although Juggernaut operates at sorcery speed, its ability to attack each turn unless prohibited creates a consistent pressure that aligns well with decks that favor instantaneous interactions. It demands that opponents maintain instant-speed responses or suffer the consequences, thereby fitting nicely into a strategy that values immediate impacts on the board state.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: The Juggernaut card necessitates a discard action from the player, which can deplete valuable hand resources, putting them at a strategic disadvantage during crucial turns.

Specific Mana Cost: Juggernaut demands a precise mana arrangement for its casting, incorporating colorless mana that may not seamlessly integrate into all deck types, potentially hampering deck-building flexibility.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a mana cost that is on the higher side for its aggressive capabilities, Juggernaut competes with other creatures or spells which might offer better board presence or value for the same or less investment.

Reasons to Include Juggernaut in Your Collection

Versatility: Juggernaut is a classic artifact creature that can be integrated into a variety of decks that capitalize on aggressive strategies. Its nature as a must-attack card ensures it remains a constant threat on the board.

Combo Potential: This card pairs well with abilities or mechanics that reward you for attacking, such as battalion or various red and white strategies that incentivize combat.

Meta-Relevance: In an environment with fewer creature removal spells, Juggernaut can dominate the battlefield and become a considerable force opponents need to answer quickly.

How to beat

The Juggernaut is a staple artifact creature in Magic: The Gathering, which poses a formidable force on the battlefield due to its relentless attacks each turn. Known for its inherent strength, it can’t be blocked by Walls, forcing opponents to think creatively to defend against its onslaught. Defeating this persistent machine often requires strategic removal spells or outmaneuvering its aggressive nature. Cards with effects that destroy or exile artifacts are particularly effective, as they can directly target Juggernaut without having to deal with its high attack power in combat.

Control decks or those with a steady stream of chump blockers excel in holding off Juggernaut’s attacks. Cards that tap creatures can also stymie it, preventing it from attacking without having to remove it from the board. Moreover, since the Juggernaut must attack each turn if able, savvy players can use this to their advantage by setting up situations where it’s forced into unfavorable combat, ultimately leading to its downfall. Recognizing the right moment to act and selecting the appropriate responses is crucial for anyone facing down the mechanical might of the Juggernaut.

Cards like Juggernaut

The Juggernaut is a time-honored artifact creature with a robust presence in decks across Magic: The Gathering. Its must-attack rule and inability to be blocked by Walls give it a unique aggressive edge, reminiscent of cards such as Phyrexian Juggernaut. While Phyrexian Juggernaut carries the infect ability, making it a lethal force, it lacks the impact of the original Juggernaut’s guaranteed attack each turn.

Another comparable card is the Battering Ram, which also has an innate ability to crush through defenses by tackling Walls. The Battering Ram has the added benefit of banding, providing a strategic advantage in formation attacks. Still, its lower power statistics don’t measure up to the Juggernaut’s consistent offensive pressure. In more recent releases, we see Fleetwheel Cruiser, an artifact vehicle that boasts haste and becomes a creature temporarily upon entering the battlefield. It shares the offensive urgency of the Juggernaut yet provides flexibility in its non-creature form.

When it comes to a relentless assault in a game of Magic: The Gathering, Juggernaut endures as a reliable choice. Its simple yet effective mechanics of compulsory attack and evasion of wall-type creatures have stood the test of time, proving that some classic tactics never go out of style.

DateText
2022-12-08 If Juggernaut can’t attack for any reason (such as being tapped or having come under your control that turn), then it doesn’t attack. If there’s a cost associated with having it attack, you’re not forced to pay that cost, so it doesn’t have to attack in that case either.
