Text of card

Choose two — • Counter target noncreature spell. • Return target permanent to its owner's hand. • Target creature gets -3/-3 until end of turn. • Destroy target planeswalker.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: With the versatility to counter a noncreature spell, return a permanent to its owner’s hand, or draw a card, Silumgar’s Command helps secure a superior position by effectively dealing with opponent’s threats or refilling your hand.

Resource Acceleration: Although it doesn’t directly create Treasure tokens, one of its modes swiftly eliminates an opponent’s planeswalker, which can set them back considerably, giving you an indirect resource lead as they lose an important value-generating asset.

Instant Speed: The ability to cast Silumgar’s Command at instant speed offers significant tactical advantages. React to opponents’ actions with precision, whether you’re disrupting their plays, protecting your interests, or swinging the game in your favor at the ultimate moment.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: In some game scenarios, having to choose a mode that could potentially make you discard a card can be counterproductive, especially if your hand is already depleted.

Specific Mana Cost: Silumgar’s Command demands a rigid mana combination that includes blue and black. This requirement can strain mana bases not tailored to accommodate such costs, hindering deck fluidity.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a casting cost of five mana, including three generic, one blue, and one black, Silumgar’s Command is at a higher spectrum. For a five mana spell, players may expect a more immediate and overwhelming impact on the game state.

Reasons to Include in Your Collection

Versatility: Silumgar’s Command’s five modes offer a range of responses to different in-game scenarios. Whether you need to counter a spell, bounce a bothersome permanent to its owner’s hand, or deal with an opponent’s creature or planeswalker, this card adapts to your needs, making it a useful inclusion in various control or midrange decks.

Combo Potential: The ability to destroy or return target planeswalker or creature to its owner’s hand can be tactically paired with other cards that capitalize on such disruptions. This disruption creates openings for your own combos or protects crucial pieces of your strategy from an opponent’s threats.

Meta-Relevance: In a game environment that’s heavy on creature-based strategies or where protecting key permanents is crucial, Silumgar’s Command offers significant interaction. If Planeswalkers are prevalent, the instant-speed removal can swing the game in your favor, keeping you one step ahead.

How to Beat

Silumgar’s Command is a versatile and powerful tool in the MTG arsenal, offering a suite of options to disrupt your opponent’s game plan. To outmaneuver this command, it’s essential to understand its flexibility – the capability to counter a non-creature spell, destroy a planeswalker, return a creature to its owner’s hand, or even force a -3/-3 situation can be a game changer. Against such multifaceted threats, maintaining a diverse and resilient board state is key.

To combat Silumgar’s Command, prioritize instant-speed spells and abilities that can’t be easily countered. Additionally, cards with the indestructible attribute or those that can regenerate provide a safeguard against its creature and planeswalker destruction capabilities. Since it’s a five mana spell, applying early pressure can also limit its impact – speeding up your play leaves less time for your opponent to stabilize using their command. Lastly, leveraging graveyard recovery strategies can help recuperate from any loss inflicted by Silumgar’s Command, ensuring a steady presence on the battlefield.

Overall, defeating this command card requires foresight and a game plan that accommodates sudden shifts in control. Adaptability and strategic card selection will be the key to triumphing over the challenges posed by Silumgar’s Command.

Cards like Silumgar's Command

Silumgar’s Command is a versatile choice within the suite of modal spells in Magic: The Gathering. It shares the multiplicity of options with Cryptic Command, both allowing a player to choose two effects out of four. However, Silumgar’s Command presents a unique combination that includes the destruction of a planeswalker and the potential to negate creatures. Cryptic Command doesn’t specifically target planeswalkers, instead focusing more on player and draw manipulation.

Another comparison can be drawn with Profane Command. While also modal, Profane Command leans towards creature control and life point manipulation. Silumgar’s Command, with its ability to counter target noncreature spell, steps into a broader control playstyle, affecting more diverse types of threats on the board.

Considering the strategic depth of modal spells, Silumgar’s Command holds its ground in MTG. It offers a blend of offensive and defensive tactics that can be tailored to the situation on the battlefield. The sheer adaptability it provides can be pivotal in swinging the game in a player’s favor.

Rules and information

DateText
2015-02-25 As the spell resolves, follow the instructions of the modes you chose in the order they are printed on the card. For example, if you chose the second and fourth modes of Ojutai’s Command, you would gain 4 life and then draw a card. (The order won’t matter in most cases.)
2015-02-25 If a Command is copied, the effect that creates the copy will usually allow you to choose new targets for the copy, but you can’t choose new modes.
2015-02-25 If all targets for the chosen modes become illegal before the Command resolves, the spell won’t resolve and none of its effects will happen. If at least one target is still legal, the spell will resolve but will have no effect on any illegal targets.
2015-02-25 You can choose a mode only if you can choose legal targets for that mode. Ignore the targeting requirements for modes that aren’t chosen. For example, you can cast Ojutai’s Command without targeting a creature spell provided you don’t choose the third mode.
2015-02-25 You choose the two modes as you cast the spell. You must choose two different modes. Once modes are chosen, they can’t be changed.
