Text of card

Fiery Justice deals 5 damage divided any way you choose among any number of target creatures and/or players. Target opponent gains 5 life.

"The fire of justice burns like nothing else." —Lovisa Coldeyes, Balduvian Chieftain

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Fiery Justice offers a unique flexibility by allowing you to distribute five damage among multiple creatures and/or players. This can lead to a significant shift in board presence, effectively dealing with smaller creatures or reducing the health of larger threats while maintaining your own creature count.

Resource Acceleration: While Fiery Justice itself does not directly provide resource acceleration, the efficient removal of multiple threats can preserve your creatures that generate resources or attack for game-winning damage. This can indirectly accelerate your game plan by keeping your key pieces in play.

Instant Speed: Fiery Justice operates at sorcery speed, which requires strategic planning during your turn. However, the versatility and sheer potential of this spell to swing the game significantly overshadows the speed limitation, especially when timed correctly to preemptively disrupt your opponent’s next move.

Card Cons

Specific Mana Cost: Fiery Justice requires a precise combination of mana to cast, demanding one red, one green, and one white. This tricolor requirement can be restrictive, essentially confining the card to a Naya deck or others that can reliably produce all three colors.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a mana cost total of five, Fiery Justice falls on the higher end of the spectrum for damage spells. For that cost, players may expect more impactful spells that could offer better board control or direct win conditions.

Discard Requirement: Although Fiery Justice does not have a discard requirement itself, aligning it within a deck that can manage its specific mana cost might mean discarding other potential plays. This tension could potentially leave players with fewer options and less flexibility during gameplay.

Reasons to Include Fiery Justice in Your Collection

Versatility: Fiery Justice offers a unique blend of damage distribution that allows players to target multiple creatures or even hit players, making it a flexible choice for various red, green, and white deck builds.

Combo Potential: This card can be instrumental in a deck that aims to control the board. Pairing it with life gain strategies or damage doublers can turn Fiery Justice into a powerhouse, clearing the way for your creatures or finishing off opponents.

Meta-Relevance: In a meta where small creature strategies proliferate, Fiery Justice shines by dealing with multiple threats at once, often swinging the momentum in your favor for a low mana cost.

How to beat

Fiery Justice is a unique card known for dispensing a swift distribution of damage among creatures and players alike. In the context of the game, countering this multicolored spell often revolves around timing and strategic denial. As a multicolored spell, it is inevitably susceptible to the numerous counterspells like Negate or Dovin’s Veto. These can effectively neutralize Fiery Justice before it can influence the board.

Another approach to undermine the effectiveness of Fiery Justice involves employing indestructible or hexproof creatures. Such creatures can shrug off or be impervious to the damage allocation that Fiery Justice offers. Additionally, quickly populating the board with creature tokens can dilute the impact of Fiery Justice, spreading the damage thin and maintaining a presence on your side of the battlefield despite the fiery onslaught.

Understanding the metagame and recognizing the patterns that signal the casting of Fiery Justice can be crucial for its counterplay. Adapting your strategy to include flexible responses can vastly increase your chances of mitigating the card’s potential for disruption and maintaining control over the pace of the match.

Cards like Fiery Justice

Fiery Justice is an intriguing card for players looking to deal damage strategically in Magic: The Gathering. It holds a unique position similar to cards like Lightning Helix, which also provides a combination of damage to any target and life gain. Fiery Justice stands out by allowing for a spread of damage across multiple creatures or planeswalkers and the player, which can be pivotal in board control. Unlike Lightning Helix, however, Fiery Justice requires the caster to give the opponent a slight buffer, granting them 5 life.

Considering the sweep potential, Fiery Justice can be compared with Slagstorm, a card capable of sweeping the field with its flexible damage distribution. Fiery Justice offers more precision in targeting but lacks the option to focus solely on creatures or players. Another card that comes to mind is Clan Defiance, with its scalability to damage creatures of different flying statuses and hitting players, but it is limited by the requirement of a target for each category and a higher mana cost.

Assessing Fiery Justice within its category of red and multicolored control spells, it certainly leaves an impression for its versatility and tactical applications, even though it carries the drawback of boosting your opponent’s life total.

DateText
2017-03-14 If some (but not all) of the targets become illegal, the original division of damage still applies, but no damage is dealt to illegal targets. If all targets become illegal, including the target opponent for the life-gaining effect, Fiery Justice doesn’t resolve. If each target for the damage-dealing effect becomes illegal while the target for the life-gaining effect remains legal, that player gains 5 life even though no damage is dealt.
2017-03-14 The target opponent for the life-gaining effect may also be a target for the damage-dealing effect. If this happens and the damage brings that player’s life total to 0 or less, the life-gaining effect will raise their life total above 0 again before the player would lose the game.
2017-03-14 You choose how many targets Fiery Justice has and how the damage is divided as you cast it. Each target for its damage-dealing effect must receive at least 1 damage.
