Text of card

Menace You may exert Khenra Scrapper as it attacks. When you do, it gets +2/+0 until end of turn. (An exerted creature won't untap during your next untap step.)

"There is no tomorrow, so hold nothing back."

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Khenra Scrapper is a card that fits smoothly into your strategy, enabling you to maintain an aggressive stance. It’s not just a creature; it can potentially remove an opponent’s blocker if you have exerted another creature, keeping you ahead in the game.

Resource Acceleration: With Khenra Scrapper, you ramp up the pressure early in the game, thanks to its reasonable casting cost. By deploying threats early, you effectively accelerate your resource impact on the board, forcing your opponent to respond to your plays sooner rather than later.

Instant Speed: Although Khenra Scrapper itself isn’t an instant, it synergizes well with cards that operate at instant speed. Its menace ability ensures that opponents must consider how they tap their creatures, fearing the instant-speed spells you may have, keeping them guessing on whether they can safely block or need to keep blockers up for the Scrapper’s potential attack.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: One of the drawbacks of Khenra Scrapper is that it demands a discard from your hand to enable certain abilities. In situations where you’re running low on cards, this requirement can hinder your momentum and put you at a disadvantage compared to your opponent, making it essential to manage your resources carefully when playing this card.

Specific Mana Cost: Khenra Scrapper requires a specific blend of mana to cast — one generic and one red mana. This demand for red mana can restrict its inclusion to decks that are centered around or can reliably produce red mana, potentially excluding it from a range of deck archetypes that don’t align with its mana needs.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: For an aggressive creature card, Khenra Scrapper’s mana cost can be considered on the higher end. Considering the aggressive and fast-paced nature of many red decks, players may find better value in creatures with lower mana costs or ones that offer more impact on the battlefield as soon as they arrive.

Reasons to Include Khenra Scrapper in Your Collection

Versatility: Khenra Scrapper is a dynamic addition to any red aggro deck. Its ability to bring early pressure with menace makes it difficult for opponents to block effectively, paving the way for consistent damage to their life total.

Combo Potential: With its exert option, Khenra Scrapper pairs well with cards that untap creatures or benefit from exertion, enhancing its aggressive capabilities and maximizing damage output during pivotal turns.

Meta-Relevance: In a meta crowded with slower game plans, Khenra Scrapper shines, exploiting slower starts by other decks. Its role in swiftness makes it a valuable asset, especially where quick, decisive plays determine the outcome of a match.

How to beat

Khenra Scrapper presents an interesting challenge in the realm of combat-focused creatures in MTG. Its prowess lies in the combination of menace, ensuring it can’t be blocked except by two or more creatures, and its notable ability to get a power boost during your turns. Directly confronting such a creature can often seem daunting, particularly as it can slip past solitary blockers with ease.

To effectively navigate against Khenra Scrapper, consider strategies that don’t rely on blocking. Removal spells that can target creatures irrespective of their blocking restrictions, such as Doom Blade or Pacifism, can swiftly neutralize the threat. It’s also advantageous to use spells that can handle multiple creatures at once, like Day of Judgment or Sweltering Suns, which can clear the board before Khenra Scrapper’s menace becomes a concern. In summary, with the right removal tools, Khenra Scrapper’s impact can be mitigated, allowing you to maintain control of the battlefield.

Cards like Khenra Scrapper

Khenra Scrapper stands out in the red creature lineup of Magic: The Gathering with its menace ability, making it a tough target to block without sufficient creatures. If we look at Ember Hauler, another aggressive two-mana creature, it doesn’t present the same challenge to an opponent’s defense. Although Ember Hauler can be sacrificed to deal damage, it lacks the inherent evasiveness that menace provides.

Moving to a creature like Ahn-Crop Crasher, there’s a common aggressive thread. Ahn-Crop Crasher also disrupts the opponent’s lines, but it does so by exerting to prevent a creature from blocking. While it’s similar in aggressive gameplay, Khenra Scrapper is consistently unblockable by a single creature and doesn’t need to be exerted. On the other hand, Akoum Warrior offers more versatility with its land modal double-faced card feature but is more costly and slower than our Scrapper.

Comparisons considered, Khenra Scrapper holds its value for players desiring a relentless assault strategy. Its combination of menace, decent power, and low casting cost makes it a respectable option among red creatures for pressuring opponents early in the game.

Rules and information

The reference guide for Magic: The Gathering Khenra Scrapper card rulings provides official rulings, any errata issued, as well as a record of all the functional modifications that have occurred.

DateText
2017-04-18 All cards in the Amonkhet set that let you exert a creature let you do so as you declare it as an attacking creature, as do some of the cards in the Hour of Devastation set. You can’t do so later in combat, and creatures put onto the battlefield attacking can’t be exerted. Any abilities that trigger on exerting an attacking creature will resolve before blockers are declared.
2017-04-18 If an exerted creature is already untapped during your next untap step (most likely because it had vigilance or an effect untapped it), exert’s effect preventing it from untapping expires without having done anything.
2017-04-18 If you gain control of another player’s creature until end of turn and exert it, it will untap during that player’s untap step.
2017-04-18 You can’t exert a creature unless an effect allows you to do so. Similar effects that “tap and freeze” a creature (such as that of Decision Paralysis) don’t exert that creature.
