Trample Cumulative upkeep—1 life

Card Pros

Card Advantage: With Gallowbraid’s resurrection ability, which lets it return to your hand at the beginning of your next upkeep when it dies, players effectively maintain card presence on the battlefield or in hand, preventing card disadvantage and offering repeated threat potential.

Resource Acceleration: Although Gallowbraid doesn’t directly contribute to resource acceleration, its Trample ability allows for potential overspill damage, enabling quicker reduction of the opponent’s life total, thereby accelerating the path to victory.

Instant Speed: While not an instant, Gallowbraid’s strength doesn’t rest in its speed but in its resilience and the consistent pressure it applies each turn it is in play. This allows players to focus their instant-speed resources on protection or disruption, knowing that Gallowbraid offers a steady offensive presence.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Gallowbraid is notable for its cumulative upkeep cost, which could force a player to either pay increasing amounts of mana or sacrifice the creature. This mechanics can notably hinder your game plan as resources become tighter in progression of the game.

Specific Mana Cost: Gallowbraid requires a specific blend of mana — one black and three generic. This restricts the card to black-inclusive decks and can be a hurdle when you’re struggling to find the necessary mana sources.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a casting cost of four mana for a creature that can be quite susceptible to removal, Gallowbraid might not always offer the most bang for your buck. Players might seek out alternatives that either bring more value or pose a lesser demand on mana economy.

Reasons to Include Gallowbraid in Your Collection

Versatility: Gallowbraid, with its trample ability and formidable stats, can serve a dual role in aggressive strategies as a heavy hitter and in defensive setups as a resilient blocker that opponents must deal with.

Combo Potential: This card possesses the potential to work harmoniously with strategies that revolve around life manipulation or that benefit from having sturdy, cost-efficient creatures with evasion.

Meta-Relevance: In formats where the pace allows for five-mana creatures to shine, Gallowbraid can be a game-changer, especially in metas less saturated with exile removals, making its regeneration ability a real asset.

How to beat

Gallowbraid is a formidable figure in the realms of Magic: The Gathering. As a creature that pairs intimidating power with staying power thanks to its regenerate ability, Gallowbraid demands a specific strategy to overcome. To tip the scales in your favor against this behemoth, consider removal spells that don’t destroy, as Gallowbraid can simply regenerate. Instead, exile effects or cards that force the opponent to sacrifice Gallowbraid can ensure it leaves the battlefield for good.

In addition to direct removal, controlling the pace of the game is crucial. Deploying counter spells when your opponent attempts to cast Gallowbraid throttles their momentum. Alternatively, playing cards that reduce the power of creatures or nullify abilities can render Gallowbraid less of a threat. A well-timed Pacifism or a crafty Turn to Frog can effectively neutralize the monster, turning an imposing force into a harmless nuisance. Always be vigilant, and adapt your strategy to address the ever-evolving threats on the board, and Gallowbraid will be but a minor hurdle in your path to victory.

Cards like Gallowbraid

Gallowbraid stands out among creatures in Magic: The Gathering with its potent combination of trample and a formidable regeneration ability. It finds companionship with cards like Sengir Vampire in terms of being a powerful creature that can often survive what would be lethal damage. While Sengir Vampire gains strength from destroying creatures, Gallowbraid is able to bounce back from damage that would typically destroy other creatures, thanks to its regeneration.

Another relative in functionality is Troll Ascetic. This creature shares the regeneration trait, ensuring its longevity in combat. Gallowbraid requires a heftier mana investment upfront and an additional ongoing cost to maintain its regenerative shield. Troll Ascetic is more economical in this aspect but lacks the offensive pressure provided by Gallowbraid’s trample ability. Looking at creatures like Thrun, the Last Troll, we notice a combination of these traits, with the added benefit of being hexproof. Thrun offers both durability and evasion, albeit with a slightly lower power level compared to Gallowbraid.

Evaluating these cards, Gallowbraid’s unique set of qualities—a high power level combined with trample and regeneration—place it as a considerable option for players seeking a resilient threat on their battlefield in Magic: The Gathering.

Date Text
2008-10-01 Paying cumulative upkeep is always optional. If it’s not paid, the permanent with cumulative upkeep is sacrificed. Partial payments of the total cumulative upkeep cost can’t be made. For example, if a permanent with “cumulative upkeep ” has three age counters on it when its cumulative upkeep ability triggers, it gets another age counter and then its controller chooses to either pay or sacrifice the permanent.
