Text of card

Enchant creature Enchanted creature loses all abilities and is a blue Frog creature with base power and toughness 1/1. (It loses all other card types and creature types.)

That gnat was still hovering by the venison, and now both looked delicious.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Frogify offers strategic board control by neutralizing a formidable creature, effectively removing its abilities and reducing the opponent’s assets without losing card quantities on your side.

Resource Acceleration: Although not directly providing mana, Frogify can indirectly accelerate your resources by allowing you to bypass potential mana sinks that an opponent’s creature might have represented, thus conserving your mana for other uses.

Instant Speed: While Frogify itself is an enchantment with sorcery speed, its transformational impact occurs immediately upon casting, allowing you to respond adeptly to imminent threats during your own main phase and avoid potentially dangerous attacks or abilities on your opponent’s turn.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Although Frogify doesn’t directly ask for a discard, transforming a threat into a benign creature might not always be worth the card spent, especially when facing decks that can easily recover or outvalue the one-for-one trade.

Specific Mana Cost: Requiring one blue mana can be problematic in multicolored or colorless decks, limiting the card’s flexibility and potentially causing it to be a dead draw if the mana base isn’t properly aligned.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a casting cost of two mana, including one that is color-specific, there are alternative removal spells or creature negation cards that could do a similar job for less, allowing for a more efficient use of resources.

Reasons to Include Frogify in Your Collection

Versatility: Frogify serves as an efficient tool for neutralizing major threats on the battlefield. It can transform a powerful creature into a harmless Frog with no abilities, making it adaptable across various deck builds that might need creature control.

Combo Potential: This enchantment has excellent synergy with cards that capitalize on changing creature types or benefit from having enchantments on the field, opening up creative deck-building avenues.

Meta-Relevance: In a game environment filled with formidable creatures, Frogify can provide answers to otherwise game-ending threats, maintaining its relevance in diverse metas as a cost-effective countermeasure.

How to beat Frogify

Frogify presents an interesting challenge on the battlefield. As a blue enchantment, it can neutralize a key creature by stripping away its abilities and reducing its power and toughness to that of a mere 1/1 frog. To effectively outmaneuver this spell, players may need to rely on enchantment removal cards such as Naturalize or Disenchanted, which are staple methods for directly dealing with troubling enchantments like Frogify.

Another strategy involves leaning on hexproof or indestructible creatures which can be resilient against Frogify’s transformation. Additionally, using counterspells like Negate or Mana Leak can preemptively stop Frogify from hitting the board, protecting your creatures from its morphing effect. Lastly, diversifying threats can apply pressure, forcing the opponent to decide which creature to neutralize, potentially leaving them open to other powerful creatures in your arsenal.

Ultimately, planning ahead and including answers in your deck that can address a variety of threats will give you the upper hand against Frogify, enabling you to maintain a strong presence on the board and continue to press your advantage.

Cards like Frogify

Frogify is an intriguing blue enchantment spell in Magic: The Gathering that turns a creature into a 1/1 Frog with no special abilities. This is similar to Kenrith’s Transformation, which also nullifies a creature’s abilities and makes it a 1/1. However, Kenrith’s Transformation includes the bonus of drawing a card when it enters the battlefield, giving it an edge in card advantage.

Another related spell is Lignify. While it shares the concept of neutralizing a threat by turning it into a treefolk with no abilities except defender, Lignify’s effect is slightly different from Frogify’s as it leaves the creature with 0/4 stats instead of 1/1. This can be crucial in terms of defensive capability. Then, there is Deep Freeze, a card that also freezes out a creature’s abilities and attacks, turning it into a 0/4 Wall with defender. Although it’s similar to Frogify, the additional toughness may help opponents block better in certain situations.

Evaluating these options, Frogify stands out for its ability to minimize a creature’s offensive threat entirely, which can be decisive in a game where every point of damage or every ability can turn the tides.

Rules and information

The reference guide for Magic: The Gathering Frogify card rulings provides official rulings, any errata issued, as well as a record of all the functional modifications that have occurred.

DateText
2020-08-07 Because damage remains marked on a creature until the damage is removed as the turn ends, nonlethal damage dealt to a creature may become lethal if Frogify becomes attached to it during that turn.
2020-08-07 Effects that modify a creature's power and/or toughness, such as the effect of Dead Weight, will apply to the creature no matter when they started to take effect. The same is true for any counters that change its power and/or toughness.
2020-08-07 Frogify may enchant a permanent that is only temporarily a creature, such as a Vehicle. If this happens, Frogify's effect causes the enchanted permanent to remain a 1/1 blue Frog creature even after the temporary effect expires.
2020-08-07 Frogify overwrites all colors and creature types the enchanted creature has. It's just a blue Frog. The creature keeps any supertypes (such as legendary) it has, but loses any other card types it has (such as artifact).
2020-08-07 Frogify overwrites all previous effects that set the creature's base power and toughness to specific values. Any power- or toughness-setting effects that start to apply after Frogify becomes attached to a creature will overwrite this effect.
2020-08-07 If the affected creature gains an ability after Frogify becomes attached to it, it will keep that ability.
