Text of card

Trample, haste When Clackbridge Troll enters the battlefield, target opponent creates three 0/1 white Goat creature tokens. At the beginning of combat on your turn, any opponent may sacrifice a creature. If a player does, tap Clackbridge Troll, you gain 3 life, and you draw a card.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Clackbridge Troll offers a distinct path to card advantage as it encourages your opponents to sacrifice creatures. Each sacrificed creature can essentially translate into drawing a card, amplifying your resources while depleting theirs.

Resource Acceleration: When Clackbridge Troll enters the battlefield, it grants your opponent three 0/1 white Goat creature tokens. While this might seem advantageous for your opponent at first, it can work in your favor by providing you with a consistent life gain and a draw engine as long as the Troll remains untapped and your opponent opts to sacrifice a Goat.

Instant Speed: While Clackbridge Troll itself doesn’t operate at instant speed, it forces immediate decisions during the combat phase. Your opponents must decide whether to allow you to gain life and draw a card or to let the formidable Troll attack. This adds a layer of complexity, as they must weigh their choices against what could be in your hand, ready to be played at instant speed.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Clackbridge Troll demands a sacrifice of creature from your side to avoid giving your opponent’s beneficial effects. This can occasionally hinder your board presence or force unwanted trades.

Specific Mana Cost: Summoning this creature requires a mixture of black and colorless mana, which can restrict it to specific deck builds, potentially diminishing its versatility across various archetypes.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a casting cost of five mana, including three black, Clackbridge Troll comes into the game reasonably late. This can slow momentum in faster, more aggressive strategies that rely on lower-cost creatures to apply early pressure.

Reasons to Include in Your Collection

Versatility: Clackbridge Troll offers a multifaceted approach as it can serve both as a formidable threat and a resource generator. Its high power and haste make it a strong offensive play, while the ability to create Goat tokens provides defensive utility for your opponent, but strategic opportunities for you.

Combo Potential: With its ‘enter the battlefield’ ability, the Clackbridge Troll synergizes with sacrifice effects and cards that capitalize on opponent’s creatures, such as those that tap opponents’ creatures or provide benefits when opponents gain life. This flexibility makes it an asset in decks geared towards intricate synergies.

Meta-Relevance: In any environment where board presence and life totals heavily influence the game, the Troll can shift the tempo to your favor. Its tendency to draw out removal spells can also pave the way for other high-value creatures in your deck to shine without facing immediate opposition.

How to beat

Clackbridge Troll is a unique and formidable card in MTG that offers players a formidable challenge. It’s a heavyweight in black with an impressive stat line and an ability that can quickly turn the tide of a game in your favor. This creature not only comes with trample and haste, allowing it to deal damage early on but also gives your opponent three 0/1 white Goat creature tokens, which they can sacrifice to gain life and draw a card.

Overcoming Clackbridge Troll requires a strategic approach. Denying your opponent the advantage of extra life and cards is critical. Utilize sacrifice outlets to control when the goats enter combat or consider employing removal spells right before your opponent’s upkeep to forestall their benefit. Alternately, use enchantments that prevent the Troll from attacking or creatures with abilities that neutralize it upon attacking. Properly managing the Troll can transform a potential weakness into a strength, utilizing its forced tap effect to clear the way for your strategy.

To summarily navigate the complexities Clackbridge Troll presents, players must focus on contingency plans and preemptive actions that mitigate the benefits it confers to the opponent while capitalizing on the momentum it provides.

Cards like Clackbridge Troll

Clackbridge Troll is a unique behemoth in the world of MTG, known for its massive size and intriguing mechanics. It shares the spotlight with creatures like Desecration Demon, which also offers a high power and toughness ratio for a low mana cost. Desecration Demon presents a challenge to opponents in a similar way, forcing them to sacrifice creatures or face dire consequences. However, Clackbridge Troll takes this interaction further by providing an immediate benefit through life gain and card draw, as opposed to the Demon’s cumulative strength growth.

Another comparable card is Abyssal Persecutor, a creature that, like Clackbridge Troll, has a significant drawback. Abyssal Persecutor keeps you from winning the game as long as it remains on the battlefield, whereas Clackbridge Troll gives your opponent creatures that can block or be exploited for other strategies. Both cards are black, tying in the theme of high-risk, high-reward gameplay.

The key difference between Clackbridge Troll and these similar cards is its ability to affect the board state the moment it enters the battlefield. It forces opponents to make immediate decisions, undoubtedly altering the pace and strategy of the game. Therefore, within the MTG realm of powerful creatures with drawbacks, Clackbridge Troll certainly stands out for its immediate game-changing dynamics.

Date Text
2019-10-04 If a player sacrifices a creature for any other reason (perhaps because it's a Food and the player was hungry), Clackbridge Troll's ability won't tap it or cause you to gain life or draw a card.
2019-10-04 When Clackbridge Troll's last ability resolves, the next opponent in turn order chooses whether they want to sacrifice a creature at all and which creature to sacrifice if so, then each other opponent in turn order does the same, knowing the choices made before them. Then all the chosen creatures are sacrificed at the same time. If one or more creatures were sacrificed this way, Clackbridge Troll is tapped and you gain 3 life and draw a card—you don't gain more life or draw more cards if more than one creature was sacrificed.
