Text of card

Lifelink (Damage dealt by this creature also causes you to gain that much life.) If you would gain life, you gain twice that much life instead.

Rhoxes who live long enough to retire from war lend support with their extensive knowledge of combat injuries.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: While Rhox Faithmender itself may not directly draw you cards, its lifegain effect can significantly enhance the value of each life point you gain. This can create effective card advantage as it allows your life total to act as a resource, enabling safer plays and the use of cards that require life payment without the usual risks.

Resource Acceleration: In the right deck, Rhox Faithmender serves as a form of resource acceleration. Doubling the life you gain effectively provides a cushion that accelerates your game plan, particularly in decks that leverage life totals as a strategic asset, such as those using “Sanguine Bond” or similar effects that benefit from high life totals.

Instant Speed: While Rhox Faithmender works at sorcery speed, its powerful lifegain multiplier remains relevant at all times. It can turn instant-speed lifegain spells and abilities into massive swings in life total, catching opponents off guard during their turn or at the end of a turn to set up for a victorious swing back.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: In a game where card advantage is key, Rhox Faithmender requires players to risk valuable hand resources in order to reap its benefits, particularly in formats where discard outlets are not readily available.

Specific Mana Cost: With two white mana in its casting cost, Rhox Faithmender can be challenging to play in multicolored decks that might not always have the right mana available, thereby limiting its flexibility across various deck archetypes.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: Costing four mana, this card can be considered slow, especially in fast-paced games where more aggressive plays take precedence. While its lifelink doubling effect is substantial, there are situations where Rhox Faithmender’s cost doesn’t align with the tempo of the game, potentially leading to missed plays or lost momentum.

Reasons to Include Rhox Faithmender in Your Collection

Versatility: Rhox Faithmender has a flexibility that allows it to be a crucial part of lifegain decks across various formats. Its ability to double life gained makes it a solid addition, enhancing the performance of decks that thrive on high life totals.

Combo Potential: This creature pairs well with cards that trigger effects whenever you gain life. In combination, Rhox Faithmender can multiply the impact of such cards, potentially leading to powerful turns and even game-winning scenarios.

Meta-Relevance: In a game state where aggressive strategies are prevalent, Rhox Faithmender shines by enabling you to outpace the damage dealt by opponents, securing a more stable position against a wide range of threats.

How to beat

Rhox Faithmender is a formidable card in MTG that doubles the life you gain, making it a favored option for life-gain strategies. However, every powerful card has its vulnerabilities. The first step to overcoming Rhox Faithmender is disruption. Utilize removal spells to eliminate it before its life-doubling ability can take effect. Cards that can exile Rhox Faithmender, such as Path to Exile or Swords to Plowshares, are highly efficient as they prevent any possibility of recursion.

Another strategy involves countering your opponent’s life-gain spells. Since Rhox Faithmender is useless without life gain triggers, a well-timed counter spell can negate the whole strategy. Reducing the life-gain synergy by focusing on removing other pieces of the combo with targeted discard abilities or spells that specifically counter creature spells can also be effective.

Lastly, apply pressure by advancing your board presence. Aggressive decks can outpace life-gain strategies, and in the face of a sizable onslaught, even the formidable doubling capability of Rhox Faithmender might not be enough to save your opponent. By combining disruption, counter strategies, and swift aggression, Rhox Faithmender can be brought to its knees.

Cards like Rhox Faithmender

Rhox Faithmender is a unique creature within the vast library of MTG cards. As a creature that doubles the life you gain, it holds a special place in strategies focused on life gain. Alhammarret’s Archive is a comparable card which not only doubles the life you gain but also the cards you draw, broadening its impact beyond Rhox Faithmender’s scope. However, the archive is an artifact with a heftier mana requirement, making Rhox Faithmender more accessible early in the game.

Another card worth mentioning is Boon Reflection, which shares the same life-doubling effect as Rhox Faithmender, yet it is an enchantment rather than a creature. This makes Boon Reflection less vulnerable to the commonly used creature removal spells. On the flip side, Rhox Faithmender can be more than just a static ability on the field; it can also serve as a formidable blocker with its substantial toughness.

Sizing up Rhox Faithmender’s advantages, its ability to meld defensive stature with a powerful life-doubling ability marks it as a cornerstone in any life-gain deck, illustrating why this card is a formidable presence in MTG’s multiline strategies.

Rules and information

Date Text
2012-07-01 If an effect sets your life total to a specific number, and that number is higher than your current life total, the effect will cause you to gain life equal to the difference. Rhox Faithmender will then double that number. For example, if you have 3 life and an effect says that your life total “becomes 10,” your life total will actually become 17.
2012-07-01 If you control two Rhox Faithmenders, life you gain will be multiplied by four. Three Rhox Faithmenders will multiply any life gain by eight, and so on.
2012-07-01 In a Two-Headed Giant game, only Rhox Faithmender’s controller is affected by it. If that player’s teammate gains life, Rhox Faithmender will have no effect, even when that life gain is applied to the shared team life total.
