Text of card

If Leyline of the Void is in your opening hand, you may begin the game with it in play. If a card would be put into an opponent's graveyard, remove it from the game instead.

Where treachery and oblivion converge.

Cards like Leyline of the Void

Leyline of the Void is a powerful staple in Magic: The Gathering decks that target graveyard strategies. It’s often measured against Rest in Peace, which also nullifies graveyard advantages by exiling cards as they hit the graveyard. While Rest in Peace affects all players, Leyline of the Void uniquely targets opponents, leaving your graveyard untouched for your own strategies.

Another card in this comparison is Grafdigger’s Cage, which prevents cards in graveyards and libraries from being played. Unlike Leyline of the Void, it doesn’t exile, but it does stop creatures and library cards from entering the battlefield. Though it’s broader in scope, Leyline’s permanent exile effect can be more disruptive against decks reliant on graveyard recursion.

Bojuka Bog enters the fray as a land with a similar but one-off effect, exiling an opponent’s graveyard upon entering the battlefield. Unlike the continuous presence of Leyline of the Void, Bojuka Bog’s impact is immediate and limited to that single use. It’s a convenient inclusion but lacks the ongoing control provided by Leyline.

Examining these alternatives to Leyline of the Void, it stands out due to its preemptive and selective graveyard disruption, establishing it as a dominant card among those aiming to shut down graveyard-centric strategies in Magic: The Gathering.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Being a static ability enchantment, Leyline of the Void provides a continuous effect that doesn’t require card expenditure to maintain. Without requiring any further actions, cards that would go into an opponent’s graveyard from anywhere are exiled instead, potentially disrupting their strategy and depriving them of resources.

Resource Acceleration: While Leyline of the Void doesn’t produce mana or tokens, it accelerates your game plan by significantly slowing down your opponents. It hampers strategies reliant on graveyard interactions, allowing you to maintain the pace and pressure without the need for additional resources dedicated to graveyard hate.

Instant Speed: Although Leyline of the Void does not operate at instant speed, its ability to be put onto the battlefield at the start of the game if it is in your opening hand makes it instantaneously active before the game officially begins. This pre-emptive capability can give you the upper hand from the very first turn, disrupting opponent strategies from the outset and setting the stage for your success.

Card Cons

Specific Mana Cost: Leyline of the Void comes with a specific mana necessity, demanding two black mana in its cost. This requirement can restrict its inclusion solely to decks that have a solid black mana base or are primarily black colored.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a casting cost of four mana, Leyline of the Void may arrive too late against decks that fill their graveyard early. While its effect is potent, its costliness can be a significant drawback when speed is essential.

Not A Universal Solution: While Leyline of the Void is aimed at graveyard strategies, it does little against decks that don’t rely on the graveyard. This can make it a less versatile sideboard option compared to cards that have broader applications.

Reasons to Include Leyline of the Void in Your Collection

Versatility: Leyline of the Void is not a niche card; it’s a powerful card that can be included in a diverse array of black decks or those needing graveyard control. Whether you’re running a control deck or something more midrange or aggro, having Leyline of the Void means you’re ready to shut down graveyard strategies right from the start of the game.

Combo Potential: Leyline of the Void works seamlessly with cards that benefit from opposing cards being exiled. It can be a cornerstone in a deck built around exiling as it effectively turns any removal into exile effects, setting up potential combos and synergies to take advantage of an opponent’s thinned-out resources.

Meta-Relevance: In a meta where graveyard-based decks are commonplace, Leyline of the Void becomes a critical piece of the puzzle. It provides an edge against popular strategies like reanimation or cards with Flashback, Dredge, and other graveyard-dependent mechanics, making it an enduring piece in the ever-evolving Magic the Gathering landscape.

How to beat

Leyline of the Void is a potent tool that significantly disrupts graveyard-based strategies within Magic: The Gathering. Its primary strength lies in its ability to hinder the opponent’s game plan from the onset if present in the opening hand. Unlike other graveyard interference cards that require you to reach a certain mana threshold before casting, Leyline of the Void can be in place before the first turn, putting immediate pressure on your opponent.

To surpass this obstacle, consider incorporating enchantment removal in your deck. Cards such as Naturalize, Disenchant, or Thrashing Brontodon offer direct ways to eliminate the leyline. Alternatively, deploying strategies that don’t rely on the graveyard minimizes the card’s impact on your game. Focusing on an aggressive play style with creatures and spells that benefit from being cast from hand can also circumvent the leyline’s influence. Additionally, using hand disruption techniques like Thoughtseize or Duress to remove Leyline of the Void from your opponent’s hand before they can play it is another effective strategy.

Given the potent effect of Leyline of the Void, it’s crucial to have a plan in place when facing decks that exploit graveyards. Whether through direct removal or adapting strategy, countering this powerful enchantment is key to maintaining your deck’s integrity and flow.

Date Text
2021-03-19 A player’s “opening hand” is the hand of cards the player has after all players have taken mulligans. If players have any cards in hand that allow actions to be taken with them from a player’s opening hand, the starting player takes all such actions first in any order, followed by each other player in turn order. Then the first turn begins.
2021-03-19 If your opponent discards a card while you control Leyline of the Void, abilities that check whether a card is discarded (such as Hollow One, or a madness ability of the discarded card) still work, even though that card never reaches that player’s graveyard. In addition, spells or abilities that check the characteristics of the discarded card can find that card in exile.
2021-03-19 Tokens can still die while Leyline of the Void is on the battlefield.
2021-03-19 While Leyline of the Void is on the battlefield, nontoken creatures your opponents control won’t die. They’ll be exiled instead. Abilities that would trigger when those creatures die won’t trigger.
