Card Pros

Card Advantage: One of the key benefits of Ojutai Exemplars is its ability to reuse spells every time you play a noncreature spell, providing a repeatable interaction with your deck that can translate into significant card advantage over time.

Resource Acceleration: While Ojutai Exemplars doesn’t directly accelerate your resources, its myriad of triggered abilities can save resources you’d typically spend on removal or protection, effectively accelerating your game plan.

Instant Speed: Ojutai Exemplars’ prowess in combat is bolstered by its ability to engage at instant speed. Each noncreature spell you cast gives it the option to gain first strike and lifelink until the end of turn or to tap a target creature, offering you flexible responses to your opponent’s actions within the combat phase or at the end of their turn, which keeps your strategies adaptive and unpredictable.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Engaging with Ojutai Exemplars’ abilities often requires having a noncreature spell to play, which can strain your hand if you’re running low on cards.

Specific Mana Cost: The Exemplars’ cost includes two white mana symbols, making it less flexible for decks that wish to keep a wide array of colors available.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a casting cost of four mana, including double white, the Exemplars compete for space in your deck at that mana slot, which in many strategies is a highly competitive curve point.

Reasons to Include Ojutai Exemplars in Your Collection

Versatility: Ojutai Exemplars can adapt to multiple game scenarios with its myriad abilities, each triggered by casting noncreature spells. Whether it’s gaining lifelink, dealing with threats through its tap ability, or dodging removal via its dash-like ability, it offers a tool for various situations.

Combo Potential: This card can orchestrate powerful combos with decks that cast numerous noncreature spells in a single turn, allowing multiple triggers of its abilities and leading to potential game-winning plays.

Meta-Relevance: In environments where creature-focused strategies prevail, Ojutai Exemplars serve as both formidable defenders and offensive threats. Their conditional abilities make them a dynamic choice against a wide swath of decks, ensuring their relevance in diverse metagames.

How to beat Ojutai Exemplars

Ojutai Exemplars can be a challenging card to play against in Magic the Gathering. For those unaware, this formidable creature boasts myriad abilities that make it quite a versatile adversary. Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, Ojutai Exemplars has the potential to either gain first strike and lifelink until the end of turn, or it can transform into an elusive threat, gaining flying and hexproof until end of turn. Additionally, if those options don’t align with your strategy, it can tap a target creature your opponent controls.

To outmaneuver this card, consider using removal spells that cannot be negated by hexproof or targeting. Board wipes that don’t target, such as “Supreme Verdict” or “Damnation,” are effective since they can bypass Ojutai Exemplars’ defensive capabilities. If your deck centers on creatures, employing ones with deathtouch can also serve as a deterrent, making any combat engagement with the Exemplars a risky proposition for your opponent. Utilizing similar tactics that disrupt your opponent’s noncreature spells can hinder their ability to trigger the Exemplars’ abilities, significantly reducing its threat level on the battlefield.

Cards like Ojutai Exemplars

Ojutai Exemplars is a unique creature card that has carved out its niche within the strategic landscape of Magic: The Gathering. When examining cards of similar ilk, one can draw comparisons to Monastery Mentor. Both share prowess – an ability that rewards the player for casting noncreature spells. Yet, Ojutai Exemplars stands distinct with built-in versatility, offering multiple modes of reaction such as gaining lifelink, tap effects, and even exile-and-return abilities when you cast a noncreature spell.

Another card worth considering in tandem with Ojutai Exemplars is Spell Queller. Though not a ground unit, Spell Queller similarly interacts with the stack, embodying the spirit of Jeskai control strategies. Still, it operates on a narrower scope, focusing on exiling spells outright. Synergy with noncreature spells is the binding thread, but Ojutai Exemplars’ ability to adapt to various board states sets it apart.

Understanding the unique tactical advantages of Ojutai Exemplars accentuates its value among creature spells in the game. Its defensive and offensive modalities when you play noncreature spells make it a formidable addition to any deck built around casting a mixture of spells.
