Text of card

Partner with Zndrsplt, Eye of Wisdom (When this creature enters the battlefield, target player may put Zndrsplt into their hand from their library, then shuffle.) At the beginning of combat on your turn, flip a coin until you lose a flip. Whenever a player wins a coin flip, double Okaun's power and toughness until end of turn.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Okaun, Eye of Chaos offers the potential for exponential growth in power and toughness, which can quickly overwhelm opponents and create board state advantages. Every win of a coin flip can potentially double Okaun’s size, making it easier to close out games.

Resource Acceleration: In coin flip synergistic decks, Okaun can work in tandem with spells that replicate coin flips or cards that benefit from winning coin flips, effectively leading to resource snowballing—leveraging those extra flips into more plays or combat advantages.

Instant Speed: While Okaun itself does not function at instant speed, its explosive combat potential forces opponents to play as though it does. They must constantly be wary of the instant speed interactions and tricks you might have that could tip a coin flip in your favor and lead to a sudden lethal attack with Okaun.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: The requirement to discard can be cumbersome for players if Okaun, Eye of Chaos is part of a combo-dependent strategy, particularly if hand size has been reduced by previous plays or opponent actions.

Specific Mana Cost: Okaun, Eye of Chaos demands a color commitment to red mana, which may restrict its inclusion in more color-diverse or non-red-centric decks, potentially compromising a deck’s versatility.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a mana cost that includes five generic and one red mana, Okaun’s summoning cost is significant, particularly when compared to other creatures in its mana range that might offer immediate board presence or impact without relying on coin flips or additional card synergies.

Reasons to Include in Your Collection

Versatility: Okaun, Eye of Chaos has the flexibility to fit into a variety of deck builds. Its chaotic coin flip mechanism is not just a fun addition but can also adapt to suit different strategies from aggressive plays to more nuanced combo tactics.

Combo Potential: This card shines when paired with its partner Zndrsplt, Eye of Wisdom, or with other coin flip enhancing cards like Krark’s Thumb, multiplying its power exponentially with each successful flip and potentially leading to a game-winning strike.

Meta-Relevance: As players constantly seek ways to counter popular strategies, Okaun offers an unconventional approach that can break through predictable defenses, making it a smart inclusion for games where unpredictability can give you the upper hand.

How to beat Okaun, Eye of Chaos

Okaun, Eye of Chaos is a unique powerhouse that thrives in coin flip-centered decks in Magic: The Gathering. The key to dismantling an Okaun strategy hinges on interrupting the combination with its partner, Zndrsplt. Without Zndrsplt to churn out extra card draws and ramping up Okaun’s attack, Okaun’s potential diminishes greatly. Managing to remove or counter either of these partners quickly is paramount.

Another effective approach is the use of cards that restrict the opponent’s ability to win coin flips or manipulate luck. Stranglehold is an exemplary card for the task, preventing the opponent from taking extra turns or searching their library, which many Okaun decks rely on for setting up their fatal combos. Direct damage spells or “destroy creature” effects are invaluable for keeping Okaun off the battlefield and are often available at a lower mana cost compared to the six needed to cast Okaun. Consequently, staying ahead in resources while applying consistent pressure is critical.

Ultimately, remain vigilant for Okaun’s arrival and maintain a swift response in your hand. Successfully nullifying the coin flip synergy can severely hamstring an Okaun player’s strategy, giving you the competitive edge needed to secure victory.

Cards like Okaun, Eye of Chaos

Okaun, Eye of Chaos introduces a unique twist to Magic: The Gathering’s roster of legendary creatures. When considering its placing within the coin-flipping archetype, Krark’s Thumb emerges as a quintessential parallel. This artifact doubles the chance of a favorable coin flip, which directly enhances Okaun’s potential for exponential power growth. Both cards revolve around the randomness of coin flipping but generate massive advantages when their effects synergize.

Further comparable is Frenetic Efreet, which encapsulates the chaotic spirit of coin-flipping with its ability to phase in or out of existence on a successful call. Unlike Okaun, it doesn’t gain power or strike for potentially lethal damage, but it allows for evasive maneuvers, potentially frustrating opponents. Zndrsplt, Eye of Wisdom should also be noted as a companion to Okaun. While Zndrsplt rewards draws for winning flips, Okaun benefits with aggressive power increases, creating a dynamic duo that can dominate a game when paired together.

Considering these comparisons, Okaun, Eye of Chaos earns its place among MTG’s coin flip cards by offering explosive offensive capabilities that, if fueled by luck or clever deck-building, can lead to rapid and game-ending scenarios.

DateText
2018-06-08 An effect that checks whether you control your commander is satisfied if you control one or both of your two commanders.
2018-06-08 Both commanders start in the command zone, and the remaining 98 cards of your deck are shuffled to become your library.
2018-06-08 If a creature’s power is less than 0 when it’s doubled, instead that creature gets -X/-0, where X is how much less than 0 its power is. The same is true for its toughness. For example, if an effect has given Okaun -7/-0 so that its power and toughness are -4/3, doubling its power and toughness gives it -4/+3 and it’s -8/6 until end of turn.
2018-06-08 If an effect has a player flip a coin but refers to whether the flip came up heads or tails, that flip has no winner or loser.
2018-06-08 If an effect instructs you to “double” a creature’s power, that creature gets +X/+0, where X is its power. The same is true for its toughness.
2018-06-08 If your Commander deck has two commanders, you can only include cards whose own color identities are also found in your commanders’ combined color identities. If Khorvath and Sylvia are your commanders, your deck may contain cards with red and/or white in their color identity, but not blue, black, or green.
2018-06-08 Note that the target player searches their library (which may be affected by effects such as that of Stranglehold) and that the card they find is revealed, even though these words aren’t included in the ability’s reminder text.
2018-06-08 Once the game begins, your two commanders are tracked separately. If you cast one, you won’t have to pay an additional the first time you cast the other. A player loses the game after having been dealt 21 damage from one of them, not from both of them combined. Command Beacon’s effect puts one into your hand from the command zone, not both.
2018-06-08 The second ability represented by the “partner with
-ame]” keyword modifies the rules for deck construction in the Commander variant and has no function outside of that variant. If a legendary creature card with “partner with
-ame]” is designated as your commander, the named legendary creature card can also be designated as your commander. For more information on the Commander variant, please visit Wizards.com/Commander.
2018-06-08 The triggered ability of the “partner with” keyword still triggers in a Commander game. If your other commander has somehow ended up in your library, you can find it. You can also target another player who might have that card in their library.
2018-06-08 To have two commanders, both must have the partner ability (featured in the Magic: The Gathering—Commander™ (2016 Edition) set) or corresponding “partner with” abilities as the game begins. A creature with a “partner with” ability can’t partner with any creature other than its designated partner. Losing a partner ability during the game doesn’t cause either to cease to be your commander.
2018-06-08 “Partner with
-ame]” represents two abilities. The first is a triggered ability: “When this permanent enters the battlefield, target player may search their library for a card named
-ame], reveal it, put it into their hand, then shuffle their library.”
2018-07-13 If an effect has a player flip a coin and refers to winning or losing a flip, only the player who flipped the coin wins or loses the flip. If that player loses the flip, nobody wins the flip.
